- Alice Madeline MCKENZIE (Laura Helen MCKENZIE-4, Francis Patrick-3, Samuel J.-2, John M.-1) was born on 15 Nov 1902 in Frostburg, Allegany Co., Maryland. Alice Magdalena McKenzie Hay Speir sent by Dottie Stumbo on December 28, 2005
Alice was my maternal grandmother, born in Frostburg on 11/15/1902. She told me her maiden name was McKenzie. But, I was sent the following information from a McKenzie resesrcher:
"Laura P. McKenzie (parentage unknown to me), married to Edward Hay, had
a daughter Alice Magdalena Hay, born on 11/15/1902 and baptized in St.
Michael's on 3/29/1903."
In the 1920 Frostburg census, Alice McKenzie lived with her mother, Laura, and her step-father, Frederick La...(illegible), and half-sisters Dorothy and Hazel (I never knew they were half-sisters--and I met the both).
Anyway, sometime in the very early 1920s Alice married Russell Speir (who appears in the Cleveland 1920 census living with his mother Katherine (Kate Spiers on the census form). Russell, of course, is the son of Allen Speir, whose death record we cannot seem to find, and grandson of Hugh Speir, who immigrated from Scotland.
(This Allen Speir would be the father of the Allen Speir from whence Harry descended. So I think that would make Harry and my mother half-first-cousins)
Anyway, they lived in Cleveland, where Russell worked in the steel mill
After having 3 children, John Russell Jr., Dorothy Marie, and Margaret Jane, Russell and Alice were divorced. Russell re-married to Dorothy Hulsebus Craigs (she was the ex-wife of Walter Craigs, who was descended from a brother of Katherine Craigs Makepeace Speir Bergholz).
Alice never remarried. She was Catholic. She died in Cleveland in 1976. I loved her dearly.

When I was a kid, my mom, my grandmother and I went to Frostburg....Grandma wanted to see her sister & family...so we stayed at Hazel's house, where I met her 3 daughters: Betty, Lois, and Carolyn. This was probably 1960 or 61.
She died in Feb 1976 in Cuyahoga Falls, Summit Co., Ohio. The following information comes from Betty Smith, Philadelphia:
