- MOUNT SAVAGE - Joseph C. Green, 67, a native of here, and a resident of Lake Wales, Fla., died in the James M. Haley Veterans' Hospital at Tampa, Fla., Aug. 12. Born and reared here, Mr. Green was a son of the late Harry Green and Rosella Lynch Green. Mr. and Mrs. Green owned and operated the Champion Bar in Miami for 14 years. He was a life member of VFW Post 6025 in Mount Savage; American Legion Farrady Post, Frostburg; charter member of Elks Lodge 2558, past governor of Moose Lodge 1753 and Legion Post 197, both at Okeechobee, Fla. He was a veteran of World War II having enlisted in the service Jan. 4, 1940, and was stationed at Nichols Air Field in The Philippines when the Japanese attacked. Mr. Green was a survivor of the Bataan Death March and spent four years as a prisoner of the Japanese. He returned home Oct. 26, 1945. He was also a life member of American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor. He is survived by his widow, Eleanor Layman Winfield Green; one son, Arthur Green, Fremont, Calif., two stepsons, Richard Winfield and Phillip Winfield, both of Miami, Fla.; four brothers, Grover Green, here; Howard Green, Manchester, Md.; Bernard Green, New Carrollton, Md., and Hilary Green, Sarasota, Fla.; three sisters, Mrs. Rosetta Adams, Vale Summit; Mrs. Leona Burkett and Mrs. Edith Garlitz, of Michigan. Services were held Aug. 16 in the Chapel of the Van-Orsdel Funeral Home, Bird Road, Miami, Fla., with interment in Miami. Cumberland Evening Times, August 21, 1986
