FROSTBURG — Gordon Jerome “Pap” McKenzie, 85, of Frostburg, died Oct. 22, 2009 at GBMC Gilcrest Hospice Center, Baltimore. Born Jan. 5, 1924 in Accident, he was the son of the late Harry and Ida (Wilhelm) McKenzie. He was a retiree of the General Motors Corporation. Surviving are two sons, Richard McKenzie and wife Karen, Stewartstown, Pa. and Michael McKenzie, Baltimore; two daughters, Diane Sapp, Baltimore and Edith Bohanan and husband Larry, Upperco; seven grandchildren, Rhonda, Mike, Kadie, Christopher, David, Heather and Zachary; eight great-grandchildren, Devin, Jordan, Gabe, Saige, Eli, Nate, Finn and Ron; one brother, Clinton, Grantsville; and one brother-in-law, John Moffitt and wife Virginia, Frostburg. Friends will be received at the Sowers Funeral Home, P.A., 60 W. Main St., Frostburg, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Michael’s Catholic Church on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009 at 9 a.m. with Father James Hannon as the celebrant. Interment will be at Maryland State Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap. Military honors will be accorded by American Legion Farrady Post 24. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Parkinson’s Disease Divisional Fund, One Charles Center, 100 North Charles St., Baltimore, MD 21201.
He. Pfc. Gordon J. McKenzie, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry McKenzie, and husband of Mrs. Mary E. Moffitt McKenzie, of Baltimore, arrived at his home last Saturday after being
discharged January 8 at Fort Meade. McKenzie entered service October 8, 1943, and trained at Fort Bragg, N. C. He went overseas, where he served 22 months with the Transportation Corps in England, France and Belgium. He wears two battle stars for the campaigns of Northern France and Normandy, the ETO ribbon, and Victory ribbon. Graduated from Grantsville High School In 1942, he was employed at the Glenn L. Martin plant in Baltimore before his induction. He and his wife and daughter are the guests of his parents. Mrs. Lemuel McKenzie and daughter, Finzel, are also guests of the McKenzies.
