- ERWIN, Tenn. — Melvin W. “Red” McKenzie, 75, of Erwin, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 1995, at Johnson City Medical Center, Johnson City, Tenn. A Mount Savage, Md., native, he was a son of the late Elmer “Tabby” and Nellie Poorbaugh McKenzie. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Gladys (Stepp), in 1987; and one brother, Reford McKenzie. Mr. McKenzie had lived in Erwin since 1980. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He retired from U.S. Steel, Gary, Ind., in 1981 after working as a fuel analyst for 31 years. Surviving are one daughter, Pamela and husband Greg Kochale; grandson, Josh; three brothers, Anthony W. “Dub” McKenzie, Ridgeley, W.Va., Theodore McKenzie, Brookville, Md., and Arthur McKenzie, Mount Savage; and two sisters, Leona Maley, Mount Savage, and Kathleen Jones, Gaithersburg.
