CORRIGANVILLE - Walter Francis "Mac” McKenzie, 94, of Corriganville, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001, at the Sacred Heart Hospital Special Care Unit. Born June 14, 1907, in Lonaconing, he was the son of the late Urban Francis and Sarah (Garlitz) McKenzie. He also was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years in Feb., 1974, Madeline (Haines) McKenzie; a brother, Lawrence McKenzie and a sister, Catherine Danahey. Mr. McKenzie was the supervisor of the service, warehouse and shipping departments at the Celanese Fibers Company. He began work as a coning operator in 1933. He retired after 37 years of service in 1970. Prior to coming to the Celanese, Mr. McKenzie had worked at the Lonaconing Glass Factory and the Kelly-Springfield Tire Plant in Cumberland during the 1926-33 time frame. He was a 1926 graduate of Central High School, Lonaconing, and received distinction this past June as the oldest surviving member of the Central High School Alumni Association. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lonaconing for 75 plus years where he served on the parish council for many years. Mr. McKenzie was active in Lonaconing community affairs up until 1983 when he moved to Corriganville. Upon his relocation to Corriganville in 1983, he became a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Cumberland. He was also a member of the Lonaconing Lion’s Club where he served as treasurer for several terms. In 1979, he was inducted into the Lonaconing Hall of Fame for his achievements in soccer, track, and basketball. He and his wife Madeline owned and operated McKenzie’s Drug Store on Main Street in Lonaconing for the period 1954-74. He was an avid grouse hunter and had learned the skill of training “bird" dogs from his father at an early age. Never one for sitting still, “Mac” filled his retirement years with home renovation projects, restoring antique furniture, cultivating a vegetable garden and preparing a variety of “oldstyle” cooking recipes that delighted friends and family alike. A loving father, who gave his time generously and was totally devoted to his family and friends, will be sadly missed. Surviving are his daughter, Khrista (McKenzie) Hinges and husband John, Raleigh, N.C.; two sons, Walter F. McKenzie Jr. and wife Judy, Potomac, Md., Hugh W. McKenzie, Winter Park, Fla.; six grandchildren, Colby, Khrista, Sean, Heather, Jessica, and Meredith; three great-grandchildren, Christopher, Anna, and Sam; his sister, Ellen Lee (McKenzie) Cordial and husband Bernie, Cumberland; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and very close friends. Friends will be received at the Eiehhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home, PA., 8 E. Main St., Lonaconing, on Friday, Sept. 7, 2001, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at 10 a m. Saturday, Sept. 8, 2001, with the Father William Moody as celebrant. Interment will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Lonaconing. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sacred Heart Hospital Special Care Unit or St. Mary’s Catholic Church Restoration Fund, St. Mary’s Terrace, SW, Lonaconing MD 21539.
