- Eva May BLOCHER (Isaac-1) was born in May 1894 in Maryland. Census 1930: Eva was 17 when married; Clarence was 33 She died on 13 Feb 1932 in Emmanuel Methodist Cemetery, Garrett Co., Maryland. A small mention of Eva was made in the November 1931 and January 1932 newspapers that she was seriously ill at Memorial Hospital. I could not locate her obituary, despite the fact that all newspapers were online for February, 1932
Eva May BLOCHER and Clarence E. Whitaker were married on 1 Nov 1911 in Frostburg, Allegany Co., Maryland. Clarence E. Whitaker died on 22 Mar 1947 in Frostburg, Allegany Co., Maryland. The damage suit of Edna Whitaker, administratrix of the estate of Clarence Whitaker, who was fatally injured March 22 when he was struck by a car, operated by Robert J. Greaves, Columbus, Ohio, was continued to January 12, this morning in Circuit Court. Attorneys for Greaves introduced a motion for removal to another county as their client was unable to be present today due to illness. Edward J. Ryan, attorney for the plaintiff, said that it is the second time the case has been delayed and asked that the trial be heard in the local court in a few days. Chief Judge William A. Huster would not consent to have the jury held over because, he said, they have been in court since October 6 and with Christmas nearing they should not be burdened any further. Associate Judge George Henderon said the introduction of the removal motion by counsel for the defendant showed "lack of faith" in that the affidavit submitted concerning Greaves' illness was dated in November. Leslie E. Clark, this city, and Evan McCrossley, Hagerstown, are the attorneys for Greaves, while Ryan is being assisted in the case by William L. Wilson, Jr. Damages of $20,000 are being asked. A S15.000 damage suit was docketed this morning in Circuit Court by the State of Maryland, for use of Cobey Engle, employer, Glen Falls Indemnity Company, insurer; Edna Whitaker, daughter, and Phyllis Whitaker, granddaughter, of Clarence Whitaker, who was fatally injured when struck by a car last March 22, near Frostburg. Robert J. Greaves, Columbus, Ohio, operator of a driver's school, was the driver of a car which struck Whitaker as he walked along Route 40 on his way to work at Engle's slaughter house. Greaves won a damage suit brought by Whitaker's daughter during the December term of court. Engle is suing for compensation paid as a result of Whitaker's death while the others are coompanion plaintiffs in the action. William C. Walsh and Thomas B. Finan are counsel for the plaintiffs. This trial was still in limbo in 1950. I did not find an outcome to the trial. Mr. Greaves apparently hit ice and was unable to control the car. It was assumed an unavoidable accident.
