Meyersdale, Pa., July 5 - Lightning killed Frank E. McKenzie, 40, and injured two of his children today as the group took protection from a thunderstorm under a tree. The injured are Ernest, 14, and Rodger, 9. Both are in Meyersdale Community Hospital. McKenzie and the two boys were operating a tractor on his farm here when the storm broke. McKenzie IS VICTIM OF LIGHTNING A Meyersdale R.D. 3 farmer was killed instantly by a bolt of lightning and two of his sons injured Tuesday as the group too protection from a thunderstory under a tree. Killed at 2:15 pm was Frank E. McKenzie, 41. Coroner Robert H. Halverson said that the death was the first caused by lightning in the county this year. He said McKenzie also received lacerations and burns of the head, face, chest, arms and legs. Injured were sons Ernest F., 14, and Rodger, 9. Both are patients in Meyersdale Community Hospital where their conditions are listed as fair. They were admitted suffering from shock a hospital report indicated.
DIED INSTANTLY Halverston said he was told that the group was mowing hay on the Greenville township farm when the storm broke. After the lightning struck, McKenzie was carried to a road nearby and a doctor called but death was found to have been instantaneous. Mr. McKenzie was born on March 20, 1914 in Greenville Township, a son of William and Bertha Johnson McKenzie. He is survived by his widow Mrs. Alverta Meese McKenzie; sons Ernest and Rodger; and his mother residing on Meyersdale, R.D. 3. Also surviving are a brother, Eugene McKenzie of Meyersdale, R.D. 3; a half brother, Elmer Caton of Boynton, and sisters Mrs. Ellis Sturtz, Meyersdale, and Mrs. Ellis Knepp, Sand Patch R.D. 1. MCKENZIE RITES Funeral services for Frank E. McKenzie, 41, of Meyersdale, R.D. 3, who was killed instantly by a bolt of lightning Tuesday, will be conducted Friday at 9 am in Pocahontas Catholic church with the Rev. Father Jude officiating interment in Greenville community cemetery. Friends will be received in the Price Funeral home, Meyersdale, until Friday.
He was buried on 8 Jul 1955 in Greenville Cemetery, Pocahontas, Somerset Co., Pennsylvania.
