- HENRY JOSEPH Jackson MATTOX Born 5 Aug 1829 DIED: about Apr 1866
Henry J.J. Mattox was the son of John A. and Mary McGee Mattox and born in Tattnall County, Georgia in 1829. He married Elizabeth (Betsy) Brazell, and they had six children; Martha, Emilie, Florida Virginia, Allen Payne, Joseph B., and William H.He served in the Civil War and received wounds from which he died about 1867. His brother, Washington E. (a Sgt. in Co. B 61st Regt. GA Infantry) was also in the Civil War and it is possible they served together. We have not been able to locate the gravesite of Henry J.J. Mattox. Washington E. is led in the old Shiloh Methodist Church Cemetery along with other members of the Mattox family and it is possible that the gravesite of Henry J.J. is overgrown and inaccessible, at this time. In the U.S. Census for 1850, Tattnall County, we find him listed as "Jackson, age 20" living at home with his father, John A. Mattox, whose wife at that time was Rebecca. Other children at home were listed as Washington, age 17; James, age 12; Martin age 9; Caroline, age 7; and Frances, age 3.In the 1860 census we find that Henry J.J. has married Elizabeth and their children were listed as follows: Martha, age 9; Jane, age 8; Florida, age 6; and Payne, age 1.The 1870 Census shows that Henry J.J. is deceased, and that his widow, Elizabeth, had the older three girls still at home and that Payne mentioned in 1860 is now called Allen, age 11. In addition there are mentioned Joseph, age 9; and William, age 3.In Guardian's Bond Book, page 20, Tattnall County, we found a document as follows: "Know all men by these present, that we Elizabeth Mattox, T.J.Williams, and J.W.Brazell, are held and firmly bound and obliged unto C.W.Smith, Ordinary of Tattnall County, and his successors in office in the sum of $800.00, eight hundred dollars, to be paid to the said Ordinary, his successors in office, or assigns, for which payment well and truly to be made and done, we bind ourselves jointly and severally and each of our heirs, executors, and administrators, firmly by these presents. Sealed with our seals, and dated at Reidsville this 6th day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and 73. The condition of the above obligation is such, that if the above bound Elizabeth Mattox who has been ,appointed by the Court of the Ordinary of said County, Guardian of the person and property of Martha, Jane, Allen and Joseph Mattox, minor and orphan children of H.J.J. Mattox deceased, shall in all things well and truly perform and discharge the duties of Guardian of the said minors as required by law, then this obligation to be void, otherwise to remain in full force and virtue. Sealed and delivered in presence of C.W.Smith,Ordinary. Signed by Elizabeth Mattox (L.S.) T.J.Williams, (L.S.), and J.W.Brazell (L.S.). I do solemnly swear that I will do and perform the duties required of me as Guardian for the minors, orphan of H.J.J. Mattox deceased, according to the laws of this State, to the best of my abilities and understanding - So Help me God. Sworn to before me this 6th day of Dec. in the year 1873. C.W. Smith, Ordinary and signed by Elizabeth Mattox." It is interesting to note that at this time there were four minor children at home, but the clerk wrote the wrong names down. He named Martha, age 23 at this time, and Jane whose age was 21; Allen, age 14, and Joseph, age 12. He left out Florida Virginia whose age was 19 at this time, and William, who was 6 years old. It is possible that all these children were still at home and that the older girls married later than 1873; however Martha and Jane were not minors. We did not find any records of the length of time he spent in the Civil War. We know that he was at home about three years after he was wounded before he died from those wounds. Allen Payne told his daughters, Minnie and Ruby, that his father died a few months before William was born, and that he regretted that his father didn't leave a portrait of himself. His father was about 37 when he died and Allen Payne was 8 or 9 years old and really didn't remember what his father looked like.
