Surnames: Mattox, Crawford, Tippins
Elijah Mattox was born about 1783 in South Carolina. His birthyear is an estimate based on the date of his first marriage and the data recorded about him in the 1830 U.S. Federal Census. The exact place of his birth has not been determined. His parents were living in present-day Fairfield District, South Carolina in 1779 and then Barnwell District, South Carolina by 1786. It is certain that he grew to maturity on a 200 acre tract owned by his father at Lemon Swamp, near Bamberg, South Carolina.
Elijah Mattox was a son of Michael McKensie Mattox and Elizabeth Joyce. In 1804 at the age of 21years Elijah moved with them to Tattnall County, Georgia. He continued to live with his parents for about a year afterwards on a 400 acre tract at Battle Creek.
Elijah Mattox was married first on 17 October 1805 in Tattnall County, Georgia to Miss Mary Crawford. She was likely a daughter of Daniel and Mary Crawford. The known children of Elijah Mattox and Mary Crawford are as follows:
1) Sarah Mattox - born 1806, married William Tootle, died 1863.
2) John A. Mattox - born 8 Nov 1808, married first to Mary McGee, married second to Rebecca Smith, died 5 May 1867.
3) Michael McKensie Mattox - born about 1811, married Mary Elizabeth Linder, died about 1846.
4) Elijah H. Mattox - born 1813, married Sarah M. Eason
Mary Crawford Mattox died before 1815 in Tattnall County. her burial place is unknown to this compiler.
Elijah Mattox married second on 6 July 1815 in Tattnall County, Georgia to Miss Candace Tippins. She was a daughter of Philip Tippins and Mary Cecelia Underwood. The known children of Elijah Mattox and Candace Tippins are as follows:
5) Joseph A. Mattox - born about 1817, married Mary Strickland, died 1885.
6) Mary M. Mattox - born about 1819, married Edward Kennedy Sr.
7) Hiram W. Mattox - born about 1831, married Sarah J. Edwards.
Candace Tippins Mattox was still living 1850 in Bryan County, Georgia. her date of death and burial site are unknown to this compiler.
An examination of the tax records for Tattnall County reveals that Elijah Mattox purchased a 250 acre tract on Thomas Creek following his first marriage in 1805. The land was an original grant to Matthew Driggers of 1803 but had been in the possession of Daniel Crawford.
Elijah Mattox acquired five more tracts totaling 1,450 acres by grant. All of these lands were located along Thomas and Battle Creeks and joined the lands of his father and brothers. By 1831 Elijah owned a total of 1,870 acres in Tattnall County and also a 202 acre tract in Muscogee County.
At some point after 1835 and before 1840 Elijah Mattox removed to Bryan County, Georgia. He re-settled in the Groveland Community. The way in which he acquired these new lands and their extent has not been determined due to the destruction of the early Bryan County records. It is known that his estate contained about 1,000 acres.
Elijah Mattox was a slave owner. He inherited two girls "Dorcus" and "Phebe" from his father in 1815. At the time of his death he held 15 slaves.
