- Henry Franklin "Sam" Roland, 61, of Flintstone, was found dead yesterday in the Green Ridge forest area off the old Williams Road, according to Maryland State Police, who said the man died of a self-inflicted chest wound from a 12 gauge shotgun. Police were called about 12:30 p.m. after the man's body was found near his parked car by a hunter, William R. Almond of Potomac Park. The incident was investigated by Tfc. Ronald Davis. Born in Bedford County, Pa., Mr. Roland was a son of the late Frank and Mae (Furlow) Roland. He was a retired carpenter and was secretary of Local 1024, Carpenters Union. He also was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and the Flintstone Volunteer Fire Company. Surviving are his widow, Mary C. (McKenzie) Roland; three sons, Ronald F., San Leandro, Calif.; William D., Charleston, S. C., and Patrick A. Roland, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; a daughter, Mrs. Joyce McCusker, Little Orleans; two brothers, Stanbert (Pat) and Derwood Roland, both of Flintstone; two sisters, Miss Marie Roland, Flintstone, and Miss Ruth Roland, Oldtown Road, and nine grandchildren. The body is at the Silcox-Merritt Funeral Residence where friends will be received tomorrow from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Cumberland News, October 21, 1970
