Recalls Historic Flight FROSTBURG - Edward R. McKenzie recalls celebrating Thanksgiving, 1944, by flying through the “legs” of the Eifel Tower in Paris in a light Army plane piloted by Master Sergeant Carl Storm. When another pilot accomplished the same feat a few years ago it made headlines around the world. McKenzie and Storm “borrowed” the Simpson L-5 artillery spotter plane to go for a ride to celebrate their luck at having survived fierce combat across North Africa and Western Europe. The flight from Cheyenne, where they were stationed, to Paris took only 20 minutes, but the Army brass didn’t recover from the incident for months afterwards. The adventurous duo were in line for a court martial, but fate intervened and their unit went into combat in Germany. The legal papers became lost in the confusion of battle, and when the war ended, McKenzie found himself in Salzburg, Austria, with all “ forgiven but not forgotten.” McKenzie admits that before making the historic flight, he and Storm “may have had a little bit to drink. I think it was Five-Star Cognac.” Cumberland Sunday Times, Sunday, October 18, 1987
