- On 26 December 1992, Mr. Ira Zachariah McKenzie of Edmonton passed away peacefully at the age of 81 years. Born on the 4th of July 1911 near Enid, Oklahoma, he came to Canada as a child in 1913 along with eight farming families of McKenzies who established the "McKenzie Settlement" at Peers AB. Enduring many hard ships, at the age of 15, Ira became the bread winner for five brothers and sisters when his father died of Bright's disease. One of Alberta's real pioneers, Ira carved a farm out of the wilderness at Grassland, AB. (so named by the clan) with his double-bit axe and left handed walking plow. He successfully raised his own family through the Depression and World War II. His character, philosophy and humour will be sorely missed. Ira was predeceased by his first wife, Lillian and by his stepson, Donald and by his second wife, Evelyn Harkness. He is survived by his loving sons, Keith (Della) McKenzie of Santa Cruz, California, Robert (Doris) McKenzie of Winterburn, AB; and his daghter-in-law, Jeanne McKenzie of Houston, BC; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He also leaves his sisters Hazel (Bill) Barnes of Vernon, BC, Yvonne McKenzie of Penticton, BC and Irene Samuels of Edmonton. Friends may pay their respects Thursday, December 31 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Friday January 1 from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the Mayflower Salon of Connelly McKinley Funeral Home 10011-114 Street. Reverand William McCormack, CSSP will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial Saturday, January 2, 1993 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 10826-62 Avenue followed by cremation and inturnment in the St. Albert Catholic Cemetary. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations be made directly to Catholic Social Services, 8815-99 Street, Edmonton.
