- Jonas Evan MCKENZIE (Charles Oscar-2, Urias-1) was born on 24 Jan 1920 in Frostburg, Allegany Co., Maryland. He died on 29 Jul 2012 in Alpine Lake, West Virginia. ALPINE LAKE, W.Va. — Jonas Evan McKenzie, 92, of Alpine Lake and Bradenton, Fla., died Sunday, July 29, 2012 at home on Alpine Lake. Jonas was born Jan. 24, 1920 in Frostburg, the son of the late Oscar and Bessie McKenzie. He was a member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Oakland and was an usher at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Bradenton. He was a U.S. Navy veteran having served during World War II. Jonas was retired from the U.S. Postal Service as a carrier with more than 30 years of service and in his retirement became an avid golfer. He was past president of Northern High School PTA and was instrumental in raising money for the football program. He also served as past Commander of the American Legion in Grantsville, a member of Grantsville Rotary and a founder and charter president of the Grantsville Lions. He is survived by his wife, Betty (Bittinger) McKenzie; two daughters, Patricia Schroyer of Grantsville and Theresa Smith and husband Dan of Hockessin, Del.; a son, James McKenzie and Sharon of Medford, Ore.; two stepdaughters, Michele Carl of Greensburg, Pa. and Lisa Brenneman and husband Steve of Oakland; a stepson, Paul Roderick and wife Janet of Swanton; nine grandchildren’ six step-grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Blanche Miller and Myrtle Bridges; four brothers, Marsh, Cobey, Wilbert and Martin McKenzie. At his request he was cremated. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, Aug. 3, 2012 at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, 208 South Fourth St., Oakland, at 10 a.m. with Monsignor Paul A. Byrnes as celebrant. Interment will follow in Garrett County Memorial Gardens, Oakland with military honors. To thank Hospice for the excellent care that Jonas received, the family request that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice Care Corporation, P.O. Box 760, Arthurdale, WV 26520.
