- MIDLAND — Henry Sylvester Spiker, 82, of Dan’s Rock Road, Midland, died Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009 at Egle Nursing and Rehab Center, Lonaconing, where he had been a resident for six weeks. Born Sept. 27, 1927 in Frostburg, he was the son of the late Henry Lorenzo Spiker and Blanche Gertrude (McKenzie) Spiker. He was preceded in death by his sister, Elizabeth, who died in infancy; his brother, Joseph; and two sons-in-law; Rick Walbert and Dan Sloan. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Midland. He was also a member of the Midland Sportsman’s Club. He enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing and the hobby of being a HAM Radio operator where he communicated with people all over the world. He was a graduate of Beall High School and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He retired as tire builder from Kelly Springfield in Cumberland. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Lee (Buskirk) Spiker; two daughters, Donna Walbert of Frostburg and Joyce Spiker of Westernport; one son, Steven Spiker and wife Patricia of Bedford, Pa.; three grandchildren, Heather Walbert Britton of LaVale, Danny Allen Sloan of Lonaconing and Dawn Lynn Sloan of Cumberland; four great-grandchildren, Abigail Rose Britton of LaVale, Taya Dawn Sloan of Cumberland, Macy and Towson Sloan of Lonaconing; two sisters, Rose Marie McAlpine of Lonaconing and Eileen C. Oester of Meyersdale, Pa.; and seven nieces and nine nephews. Family and friends will be received at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Midland on Monday, Oct. 26, 2009 from 9 to 10 a.m. A Catholic Mass of Celebration and Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. with Father Edward Hendricks celebrant. Inurnment will be held at the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery, Rocky Gap, Flintstone, with full military honors following the service at 11:30 a.m. Arrangements handled by the Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home PA., Midland.
