Notes	Note from Betty Smith, October 29, 2014: George was a Sergeant in Co 1 and B. Ind. Md. P.H.B. His wife Mary was the teacher at Old McKenzie School for the year ending May 13, 1881. They lived on what was known as the Freeman Garlitz farm in my time, Freeman buying it from George and Mary when they moved to Cumberland, MD, and starting a family grocery store. GARLITZ - 23 Feb 1916 - George W Garlitz, aged 56 years, of 17 Arch Street, died of a stroke yesterday. A wife and these children survive; Mrs Clarence Chaney of Frostburg; Mrs Thomas Wilhelm of Oakmont, WV; Mrs Veindetta Crozier of Ontario, Canada; Miss Arminda Garlitz of Detroit MI; and Harvey Garlitz, Ira Garlitz, Enzer Garlitz and Thelma Garlitz at home. Services at St. Mary s Catholic Church and burial in St. Patrick s Cemetery. (Cumberland Times transcription by Charles Often) George W. Garlitz, 66 years old, 17 Arch street, fell dead from the cellar steps at the grocery store of his sons, Harvey and Ira Garlitz, First street and Grand avenue, late yesterday afternoon. He was resting after helping to unload potatoes from a truck and was seized by heart failure. Dr. George L. Broadrup, who was summoned, was of the opinion that Mr. Garlitz was dead before he hit the cellar floor. Mr. Garlitz was a retired farmer of Garrett county and is survived by his wife, two sons and six daughters, as follows: Mrs. Clarence Chaney, Frostburg; Mrs. Thomas Wilhelm, Oakmont, W.Va.; Mrs. Bernadetta Crozier, Ontario, Canada; Miss Arminta Garlitz, a student nurse at Providence Hospital, Detroit, Mich.; Misses Enzie and Thelma Garlitz, at home; and Harvey and Ira Garlitz. Less than two months ago, Samuel F. Garlitz, a son, died from scarlet fever. Mr. Garlitz is survived by four brothers - Noah, Francis, and Israel Garlitz, of Avilton, Md., and Enoch Garlitz, Frostburg. The funeral will be held on Friday morning at 9 o'clock, from St. Mary's Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Patrick's cemetery. The Cumberland Press, Wednesday, February 23, 1916
