CUMBERLAND — M. Ann McKenzie, 87, of Cumberland, died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2006, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va., in the company of her children and grandchildren.

Born Feb. 13, 1919, she was the devoted daughter of the late Arthur Francis and Lenore Virginia (Lippold) Young.

Married on Sept. 16, 1944, she was the wife of the late Ambrose Raymond Mckenzie, with whom she celebrated 59 years of marriage at the time of his death on Nov. 8, 2003.

She was also preceded in death by one son,Robert Ambrose McKenzie; and three great-grandchildren, Phillip McKenzie, John McKenzie, and Jacob Ambrose Morris.

Mrs. McKenzie was a 1938 graduate of Ursuline Academy and Ursuline School of Business. She was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She was awarded the Golden Eaglet by the Girl Scouts, the highest award in Scouting.

She worked as a bookkeeper for Cas Taylor's Restaurant and as a secretary at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Cresaptown. She had been a bookkeeper for private businesses, including Fran's Bakery. In her earlier days, she worked at Speelman's Dairy.

Mrs. McKenzie was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, church choir, Secular Franciscan Order, and a Eucharistic Minister. She was a volunteer with St. Anthony's Place Food Pantry. Mrs. McKenzie also served on the church council and directed the dining room during the church's annual dinner for many years. In addition to attending mass daily, Mrs. McKenzie attended Adoration and belonged to the church's prayer group.

The hallmarks of her life were prayer, feeding the poor, and the love of her family.

Survivors include her children, Michael F. McKenzie (Carol Ann), of Rawlings, Joseph E. McKenzie (Debbie), of Dunedin, Fla., Mary Ann Emery, of Morgantown, W.Va., John P. McKenzie (Sue), of Cumberland, Stephen M. McKenzie (Julie), of Rawlings, and Lenore McKenzie-Morris (Gary), of Surfside Beach, S.C.; and a former daughter-in-law, Carol Jean Cessna (the late Robert); she was a grandmother to Kimberly A. She served as the matriarch in the family to more than 97 nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Her greatest joy was to be surrounded by her family. She thought nothing of having dinner for thirty or more people, provided the tables were set with china and linen napkins or at table-cloth covered picnic tables in the backyard. She loved music and attended concerts at every opportunity. She could whistle in perfect pitch and project the sound across the west side of Cumberland and up the face of Haystack Mountain, a skill she used to call her children home. She was a faithful sports fan and an avid birdwatcher who could name a bird by its call.
