Arrested in connection with the pre-holiday fatal motor mishap in the Cumberland area, William H. Moore, 35, of Harrisonburg, Va., was ordered held for action of the October Grand Jury, at a coroner's inquest yesterday into the death of Michael Edward McKenzie of 307 Wills Creek avenue, in a truck-auto crash on the Uhl Highway near Spring Gap, Sunday afternoon. Moore, driver of the truck, remained today at Allegany Hospital, where he was taken with hip injuries and lacerations of the head and body. State police and county officers said Moore admitted he had been drinking and that his chauffeur's license had expired June 30. He was operating the cab section or tractor that had been detached from a trailer truck when the machine crashed into McKenzie's car on a curve near Spring Gap. McKenzie died from a crushed skull, internal injuries, a severed (unreadable) and other injuries shortly after he was admitted to Memorial Hospital. Five passengers in his car were given hospital treatment for minor injuries. They were Regina McKenzie, 26 and Bernadette McKenzie, 12, sisters; Paul (age unreadable) and Leo McKenzie, 10, brothers; and William Geatz, 19, also of Wills Creek avenue. Four passengers on the truck were also treated at the hospital. They were Belford Grapes, 32, and his wife, Mrs. Nellie Grapes, 27, of 200 Race street; Homer Grapes of 907 Glenwood street; Jesse Mongold, 916 Glenwood street. Moore was returning from Paw Paw, W. Va., when the truck failed to negotiate the curve and crashed into the car traveling in the opposite direction. The car was badly damaged. Moore left the scene of the crash, despite his injuries, and was arrested later on Glenwood street by Sgt. A. M. Spioch and Officer George J. Miller, State Police. McKenzie is survived by his mother, Mrs. Catherine (Boch) McKenzie; three other sisters, Helen, Catherine, and Margaret, and by another brother, Ambrose McKenzie, all of this city. Young McKenzie as a youth was an Evening Times carrier for about (unreadable) years. He was employed by the Celanese Corporation of America and was a member of SS Peter and Paul Holy Name Society. His father was the late Walter McKenzie. The Cumberland Evening Times, July 5, 1938.
