- Mr. and Mrs. Reid C. Hoenicka, 202 Columbia street, announce the marriage of their daughter, Pauline Louise, to Corporal Charles Arlen (sic: Arthur), son of Mrs. Ruth Simons, 315 Frederick street. The double ring ceremony was performed Friday, December 24, in the rectory of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Charles W. Bogan officiating. Miss Mary Frances Ratke was the maid of honor and Francis Becker served as best man. The bride was attired in a soldier blue dress with which she wore black accessories. A corsage of red rosebuds completed her costume. The maid of honor wore a gold-colored dress with brown accessories. Her corsage was of Talisman roses. The bride attended Catholic Girls’ Central High School and Catherman’s Business School. Corporal Moyer has served with the U.S. Army in the Hawaiian Islands and Panama. Reid C. HOENICKA was born on 19 Jul 1888 in Cumberland, Allegany Co., Maryland. He died on 18 Dec 1965 in Cumberland, Allegany Co., Maryland. Former Cumberland Fire Chief Reid C. Hoenicka, 77, of 119 Polk Street, died yesterday in Sacred Heart Hospital where he had been a patient 12 days. Chief Hoenicka had been in ill health one year. Chief Hoenicka joined the Cumberland Fire Department in 1910, three years after the paid department replaced the volunteers in Cumberland. At the time, the department was composed of 23 firemen with two stations, one on the West Side at Spruce Alley, and the other in South End on Browning Street. Mr. Hoenicka was named fire chief in 1916 and retired in 1948. He once recalled when he joined the department the city owned two horse-drawn hose wagons. A native of Cumberland, Chief Hoenicka was born July 19, 1988, a son of the late Christopher and Sophia (Hess) Hoenicka. His wife Bernadette (McKenzie) Hoenicka preceded him in death. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, the Police and Firemen's Welfare Association and Cumberland Aerie 24 FO Eagles. Survivors include five daughters, Mrs. Helen Clark, Mrs. Sarah Dorsey, Mrs. Pauline Moyer, Mrs. Bernadette Leidinger and Mrs. Rita Keplinger, all of this city; three sons, John R. Hoenicka, Baltimore, and Charles E. and Phillip F. Hoenicka, both of this city; a sister, Mrs. Minnie Hetzel, city; 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. The body is at the Silcox Funeral Residence where the family will receive friends today and tomorrow from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A requiem high mass will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 a. m. in St. Patrick's Catholic Church and interment will be in the parish cemetery. The Rosary will be recited at the funeral home tomorrow at 8:45 p.m. The FOE will conduct a memorial service in the funeral home today at 7:30 p.m. The Cumberland Sunday Times, December 19, 1965.
