Jasper Newton Grinstead is listed in the Virginia Pension List for 1909. It was a record of pensioners, still alive, who served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Jasper Newton Grinstead was wounded during the Civil War. He lost two fingers during the Battle of Winchester, which he claimed partially disabled him. He submitted the Pension Claim in connection with the 1888 Virginia Pensioner’s Act. The pension claim was approved in 1896. An extremely interesting discovery was made by the Southeastern Grinsteads during Christmas break 1999. After Mike McKenzie related the information about Jasper Newton Grinstead having lost his index and middle finger of his left hand during the Battle of Winchester, an old family photo of Jasper Newton seated next to his son, Charles Meek and his wife, Minnie was examined. Lo and behold the picture showed that Jasper Newton was missing those two fingers. Although members of the family had looked at that photo for years, no one had ever spied the missing two fingers until that time.
Jasper Newton Grinstead’s death certificate was filed of record with the Commonwealth of Virginia. It reflects that he was born on March 26, 1832 in Washington County, Virginia. His father was listed as being Henry Edwards Grinstead born in Albamare (sic) County, Virginia (this information conflicts with information compiled by other researchers who have stated that his father was Edward Walton Grinstead). His mother was Katie Donevan born in Roan County, North Carolina. Jasper Newton Grinstead was a miller and carpenter while he was alive. He died of carcinoma of the face and was buried in Riverside Cemetery on July 21, 1914. He was living in the St. Clairs district of Smyth County, Virginia at the time of his death. The information on his death certificate was supplied by his son, Charles Meek Grinstead.
