State police in Somerset said icy road conditions on Wednesday morning contributed to a crash that killed a 73-year-old deputy coroner and retired Somerset Borough policeman near Rockwood. Police said James W. Hahn of Somerset died in the crash that occurred about 9:25 a.m. along Water Level Road in Milford Township, near Laurel Hill State Park. “It's been a very tough day. He was a wonderful person ... like a brother to me,” said county Coroner Wallace Miller. Police said Hahn's 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt was traveling south on the rural road when a northbound 2001 Dodge Durango driven by a 17-year-old Rockwood boy went out of control and struck Hahn's vehicle. The crash occurred about a mile outside Rockwood. The teen's vehicle crossed into the southbound lane and Hahn couldn't avoid the collision. Hahn's car was struck on the driver's side door. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said neither driver was wearing a seat belt. The teenager, whom police did not identify, was taken to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown. “Everybody knew Jim. One or two weeks after he retired as a policeman in 2005, my dad (Wilbur) and I were looking for someone to help around the funeral home. He was always very personable, and we knew he was always very good around bereaving people, so we decided to ask him if he'd be interested, and we hired him,” Miller said. “The work with the funeral home naturally led to his work as a deputy coroner, and he was very good at it,” Miller said. “He'll definitely be missed.” Hahn was headed to the Miller Funeral Home in Rockwood to assist with a funeral when the crash occurred. Hahn is survived by two sons, Jeffrey William and Steven Henry, and a grandson, Kurt. He graduated from Meyersdale High School and worked at Shipley Hardware from 1960 to 1962. After a tour in the Army from 1963 to 1965, during which he was attached to the 515th Military Police Company, he worked as a police officer in Meyersdale from 1966 to 1970. He graduated from the Municipal Police Academy in Hershey in 1968. In 1970, he was hired as a police officer in Somerset and retired in 2005. He was still active with the Roof Garden Lodge 98, Fraternal Order of Police. Funeral arrangements were not complete. Connellsville TribLive News article, February 19, 2014 | Hahn, James W. (I54126)

Stephen Elias, was named after and baptized in Maryland by the famous Rev. Father Stephen Baden, the first native born priest ordained in the U.S. He and his wife Polly were married at St. Luke's and witnessed by their pastor, the French-born Father John Baptist Lamy. Stephen had 14 children, including one adopted child and at least two who died young. Stephen's wife was Mary Blubaugh.
Stephen and Mary "Polly" lived near Danville OH until 1862, when he led a wagon train to Allen County, IN. Mary's parents, Jacob and Honora went along. Stephen later farmed 80 acres of land near Ft. Wayne, IN.
Mary Blubaugh rode a horse, at the age of eight, in 1828 on the trip to Danville, OH when her folks moved there. She and Stephen owned an old bureau which was said to have come over on the ship that brought her family from Holland about the time of Lord Baltimore. They were said to have gone to England because of the religious persecutions in Holland and came over on a boat leaving for Maryland and the colonies. The bureau was bought from the estate by daughter Mary Catherine Blubaugh (Magers) and son-in-law and presented to the Historical Museum at Notre Dame University sometime in the 1930's. It had been used in their home in all three states (MD, OH and IN) many times as an altar for the Catholic missionaries to say mass.

Susan Augusta De Lancey Cooper
Birth: Jan. 28, 1792
New York
Death: Jan. 20, 1852
New York
Wife of James Fenimore Cooper. Daughter of John Peter De Lancey. She
married James in 1811. While she is not famous in her own right, were it not for her influence, we might not know the name of James Fenimore Cooper. Apparently it was his habit to read aloud to his wife. After expressing his disatisfaction with a novel and saying he could do better, his wife challenged him to do so. Although his first novel was not a success, he wrote thiry-one more. In 1826, she and James along with their children moved to Europe, where they spent the next seven years living in France, Switzerland, and Italy. When the couple moved back to the United States, they returned to his childhood home in Cooperstown which is named for James' father. There they remained and there they are buried.
The family was listed on September 26 on page 90 of 93 of the 1850 US Federal Census for Ostego, Ostego County, New York as follows: J F Cooper, age 60, author; Susan A, age 58; Charlotte, age 33; Susan A, age 37; Marie, age 31; Paul, age 26; and Amy Clayton, age 33. James was born in New Jersey. Amy Clayton was born in England. The rest were born in New York.
