SLABTOWN — Jackie Edgar “Jack” Skidmore, 82, died on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2015, at his home. Born June 27, 1932, in Midlothian, Mr. Skidmore was the son of the late Edgar and Anna (Williams) Skidmore. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Virginia M. “Red” Skidmore, March 22, 1997; a son, Kevin Z. Skidmore, Jan. 9, 2014; three brothers, Harold “Sal” Skidmore, Frank Skidmore, Clifton Skidmore, and Tommy Skidmore (raised like a brother); and a sister, Leona Collawn. Our Dad was a hardworking man during his life. He grew up during the 1930s and 40s. At a young age, after school, he worked the 3 to 11 shift in the coalmines helping dig and load coal cars. He joined the Army National Guard Company D115 Infantry Regiment at a very young age to make extra money. In 1951, Jack married his high school sweetheart, “Red,” whom he loved more than life itself. They moved to Johnstown, Pa., where he worked in the steel mill. Having their first child, “Mommy” wanted to come home, so they moved back and eventually purchased our Grandpap Winebrenner’s home place, referred to as the “Hill.” Alongside with his brother, Bill, they cleared the farm, cutting trees, moving rocks, and all that was needed to call it home. He and our mother raised cows, pigs, and chickens just to keep food on the table. Our parents labored endlessly to support their family. We have had good times and bad, like most families do. Times of sickness, times of happiness, times of sadness and despair, but we have held together as our mother wanted. Today, on that small farm, 10 houses exist and we’re all family, and before our mother’s passing in 1997, it was named Red’s Lane. Dad was an avid baseball player (catcher) through high school, into his early thirties in local leagues, and was instrumental in his sons’ development and interest in sports including his grandchildren. He worked various jobs, including the Cumberland Undergarment factory and eventually the Celanese Fibers Corporation of America. He worked there 23 years until they closed. When mom became sick, he retired early to take care of her and wintered in Lakeland, Fla., until she passed. Jack is survived by his sons, C. Wayne Skidmore and wife, Vickie, Neal “Pete” Skidmore and wife, Donna, all of Slabtown, Dennis “Denny” Skidmore and wife, Rhonda, Midlothian; and his daughter, Jacque Golden and husband, Terry, Slabtown. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Lisa Gaumer and husband, Jason, April Skidmore and fiancé, Roger Moore, Heather Linn and husband, Gary, Jason Skidmore, Becky Skidmore and friend, Aaron Kalbaugh and Ashlyne Skidmore; his great-grandchildren, Logan Skidmore, Daniel Pressman, Blaine Austin, Addison Skidmore, Charlotte Gaumer, Tanner Austin and Max Linn; his step-granddaughter, Angel Africa and husband, Sam; and his step-great-grandchildren, Brooke, Emily, Karlee, Hunter, Chase; and his great-great-grandson, Brantley. Also surviving are his brothers, William “Bill” Skidmore, his best friend, Slabtown, and Leroy “Wee” Skidmore, Grahamtown; his sisters, Helen Potter and husband, Ralph, Roan Mountain, Tenn., Wanda Binnex and husband, Dave, Inez Kifer and husband, Leo, Betty Bittinger and husband, Delmus, Margaret Green and husband, Gary, and Frances Kemp and husband, Kenny, all of Frostburg; and a very special lady friend, Carol Klink and her son, Nathan, and her grandchildren, Emmahley and Allex; as well as, numerous nieces and nephews. At his request, Jack is being cremated. Services will be private and at a later date. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Mount Savage Volunteer Fire Department Company One, Post Office Box 533, Mount Savage, MD 21545. Some more insights into the lives of Ellis Baker Grinstead and Rachel May Bingham were provided to the author by Virginia Lea Grinstead, their youngest daughter. She wrote in April, 1999.
Dave (John David Grinstead) told me that you are interested in some family history. I sent Bob (Robert Lawrence Grinstead) most of these letters, but I wasn’t sure you had them. I am enclosing Grandma’s letters (Elizabeth Bertha Fritschie), one letter from Grandpa (Adelbert Decolia Bingham), some of her poetry and a letter from Aunt Ruth (Ruth Amelia Evans Bingham) to Grandma written before she married Uncle Lee (Elmer Lee Bingham). I copied some of the originals so you can see her writing. I have some great pictures from this time I would be glad to copy for you if you would like. When Auntie Becky (Rebecca Fern Grinstead) was dying I copied some of Darlene’s pictures so I may have some that Bob doesn’t have.
A little history on these letters:
When Mom and Dad married in Oct. of 1926, Grandma came to live with them. When Charmie was born, Dad and Grandma delivered her and Dad gave her her first bath. Grandma did live in an apartment for a short while (which burnt down) but most of her life she lived with Mom and Dad. She visited her other children from time to time. These are the letters she wrote to Aunt Ruth and Uncle Lee. Aunt Ruth saved them and gave them to me. She also had more letters that were found when she died and he has promised to copy them for me. Grandpa and Grandma were estranged for most of the time after Mom and Dad were married, but Grandpa lived with them from time to time. Grandpa died lon before I was born, but I remember Grandma quite well. She started suffering from dementia in the early 1950’s and Mom and Dad put her in a nursing home sometime about 1953-54. Mom said Dad cried when he carried her to the car to take her there. I used to catch the bus after school and go visit her. Mom used to give me 15 cents to buy her grapes. She died in April of 1955. She had broken her hip and died of complications. Grandma was a very interesting lady. She was an artist, played the piano and was very well educated. She was a suffragette and wrote some articles to the papers on women’s rights that I can copy for you if you like. Uncle Lee used to tell me “you are just like Ma” and that was not a compliment! You might enjoy a book by Wallace Stegner called “Big Rock Candy Mountain” that I think really has a lot of parallels to Grandma and Grandpa’s life.
I am writing this at our house in Longview, and miss our computer and spell check. Please ignore my numerous errors. My memories are, of course, my own and you Dad may see them differently. By the way, much to Dave’s delight, he said you had my birthday in 1940 – it is really 1946, although after the year I have had I feel at least 60.
Give our love to your family and come see us when you can.
Love
Ginny

IN THE MEMORY OF MY MOTHER
Whether at dawn of the morning or late at night
She ministers to the needs of the little mite
At intervals, then her slumbers cease
That she may know her babes rest in peace
Tho for months no absolute rest she knows
While with utmost tenderness she bestows
The love that none but a mother can give
To a tiny mite, that it may thrive and live.
Then when it has strength to toddle about
How in bending and lifting she wears herself out.
No being, no element so fierce and wild
But she will step between it and her child.
In the same way, thwn, in later years
All her joys, hopes sorrows and tears
Are all laid as a sacred offering
To the best of life for her beloved offspring
When sons or daughters suffer she suffers, too,
No friend more sincere, no love more true
ARE ORDINARY LIVES ALL LIKE MINE
Oh can it really be!
Then if such a thing were true
There could be nothing good or fine
If all were bound like me
My fate that opposes at every turn
Any initiative whatever it be
There is always a something to hinder me
If we could know the story of each one
There are millions who tried and tried
Who have not the battle won
For they were kept to the extreme
At every turn by the giant poverty
Who steps in between and so much as to say
Surmount me if you dare!
God made all good things to abound
But the wicked rich in some way devise
To manipulate so things won't go around
If there were no want they would have no power
And the world would become a paradise

Andrew McKenzie, Demented Young Man Living in Greenville Township Shoots Himself
Last Saturday morning Andrew McKenzie, a young man from near Pocahontas,
committed suicide by shooting himself with a 12-guage shotgun. The young man had suffered from a mental derangement for some time and had spent five months in the County Hospital and returned to his home recently, much improved. Last week his brother was taken to the county institution for similar treatment. This seemed to worry Andrew very much. He had stated that he would kill himself rather than go back to the hospital for the insane. He apparently was in mortal fear of being taken back to the hospital, and on Saturday morning he took a shotgun and ended his worries. Coroner Emma Fluke reported it a case of suicide. He loaded the gun with a pumpkin bullet and, placing the butt of the gun on the ground and the muzzle under his chin, he stooped over and pulled the trigger. He was aged 27 years, 1 month and 12 days. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James McKenzie, and eight brothers and sisters, namely: Mrs. Rebecca Bolden, Grantsville, Md.; Robert McKenzie, Greenville Twp.; Elmer, Mt. Savage, Md.; Augustus, Glencoe; Wilbur, Greenville Twp.; Herbert, Akron, O.; James, Cleveland, O.; Mrs. Mary Blank, Mt. Savage, Md.; Mrs. Viola Zerbuck, Akron, O. Funeral services were held in the Pocahontas Catholic Church on Monday morning at 10 o'clock, followed by burial in the Loraditch Cemetery, in charge of Undertaker J. F. Reich.
