"Book Antiqua": Purley Hall appears to have undergone substantial alterations in 1719 when a third storey is said to have been removed because the weight was too much for the walls to bear. This was just prior to the sale of the house to the Hawes family. The Hawes' arms can be seen on Dining Room ceiling and in the heraldic glass of the Drawing Room.
Unfortunately they became embroiled, with a cousin, in the South Sea Bubble Crisis but, though they lost the Hall, they were able to maintain residence through a creditor's agreement. Being short of cash, however, they did rent the Hall out, for many years, to Warren Hastings, the disgraced Governor of India, while he awaited his trial. His unhappy time here was enlightened by the Indian menagerie that he kept about him! His ghost is still said to haunt the house. "Death of an Old Lady-Mrs. Joseph Winner, a widow and one of the oldest ladies of the town, died at her home on Federal Hill of old age and general debility. The deceased was in her seventy-third year and was a very devoted member of the St. Michael's Catholic church which she attended regularly until failing health deprived her of doing so. She is survived by the following children: Harmon Winner, Ross Winner, Edward Winner, Frank Winner and one daughter, Mrs. Joseph Maurey all off this place. The funeral arrangements have not been completed. The Frostburg Furniture Company have charge of the remains." "Israel Garlitz was baptized at St. Mary's up at Blooming Rose. At that time it was the only Catholic Church west of the Alleghenies. It was a small log church near where they call Deep Creek Lake today. He was baptized by Rev. Bishop 'Flaget and his sponsor was Fr. Marshall. Israel was very proud of the circumstances of his entrance into the Catholic church and was fond of speaking of Bishop Fla-gitte as Israel called him. Not many souls are this fortunate. It made a deep and lasting impression on him. I suppose his brothers and sister was probably taken to church here too, or any place they were lucky enough to get to. (St. Ann Mission would have been visited infrequently by a priest.) In later years he was a very good man of the community. Israel was also confirmed here at this log church St. Mary's of Blooming Rose in the Glades. It was the first time the sacrament of confirmation was administered in what is now called Garrett County. This small church built from hand hewed logs was built in 1828 and stood till 1850 when another was built in Hoye, Maryland. It was very beautiful at this small church, with the lovely wild flowers and the natural beauty God furnished. There was about a dozen Indian converts here. Meschack Browning, the famous hunter, and his wife became Catholic here. This Blooming Rose settlement was the oldest on in what is now Garret County. In 1799, when some of these settlers wanted to be baptized, they were ministered to by Rev. Fr. Demetrius Gallitzin, (Russian Prince) the first circuit priest in the United States to minister to settlers west of the Alleghenies. "John Phifer" was born in Cabarrus county (when a part of Bladen) in 1745. He was the son of Martin Phifer, a native of Switzerland, and of Margaret Blackwelder. He raised a numerous family, who inherited the patriotic spirit of their ancestors. The original spelling of the name was "Pfeifer". He resided on "Dutch Buffalo" Creek, at the Red Hill, known to this day as "Phifer's Hill." He was the father of General Paul Phifer, grandfather of General John N. Phifer of Mississippi, and great grandfather of General Charles H. Phifer, a distinguished officer in the battle of "Shiloh," in the late war between the States. At the Provincial Council, held at Johnston Court House in December, 1775, he was appointed Lieutenant Colonel of the first battalion of "Minute Men," in the Salisbury District; General Griffith Rutherford, Colonel, and John Paisley, Major. He was a member of the Provincial Congress which met at Hillsboro on the 21st of August, 1775, associated with Thomas Polk, Waightstill Avery, James Houston, Samuel Martin and John McKnitt Alexander; and also of the Congress which met at Halifax on the 4th of April, 1776, with Robert Irwin and John McKnitt Alexander.
By this latter body, he was appointed Lieutenant Colonel of the regiment commanded by Colonel Adam Alexander. He was also a member of the Provincial Congress which met at Halifax in November, 1776, which formed our first Constitution, associated with Hezekiah Alexander, Waightstill Avery, Robert Irwin and Zaccheus Wilson, as colleagues. He married Catharine Barringer, which latter name was originally spelled "Behringer".
It was on the plantation of John Phifer, three mile west of Concord, that the gallant band of "Black Boys," headed by Captain 'Black Bill Alexander' of Sugar Creek, aided by the Whites and others from the neighboring congregation of Rocky River, effected their memorable achievement in 1771, of destroying the king's powder, which was on its way from Charleston to Hillsboro to be used by a tyrannical Governor. The reader should bear in mind this "blackening of faces", to prevent detection, was in the spring of 1771, when the patriotic sentiment of this country had not ripened into that state of almost entire unanimity which characterized it, and the State generally, four years later. John Phifer filled an early grave, and lies buried at the "Red Hill," on the Salisbury road, where a decaying headstone, scarcely legible, marks the last resting-place of this true patriot.

John Phifer was one of the signers of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence. He was the son of Martin Phifer, a Swiss emigrant, who came to America in the late 1730s.
Phifer was a planter and prosperous land owner. His land included two State grants that were given after the state was organized. In 1768, he married Catherine Barringer, the daughter of Mecklenburg Declaration signer, Paul Barringer.
Though his historic significance is associated with Mecklenburg County, Phifer is buried in Cabarrus County, a county formed from Mecklenburg County. | Phifer, John (I23353)

"PETER GARLETS was born December 15, 1820, in Pennsylvania, the son of Jacob and Elizabeth Garlets, natives of Pennsylvania. His father died in his native State, and his mother in Indiana. Peter Garlets lived in his native State until the age of twenty-three, and learned carpentering there. He was married in Ohio, January 29, 1846, to Miss Maria Fair; she and her mother, Rachel Fair, were natives of Pennsylvania, and her father, John Fair, of Ireland; they came to Indiana in 1876, and he died in this county. Mrs. Fair survives him. Mr. Garlets, in 1863, sold his farm of eighty acres in Ohio and purchased 160 acres of his present farm in this township, which he has greatly improved, furnishing it with numerous fine buildings, wind mill, etc. Mr. Garlets subsequently purchased 165 acres in Springfield Township, and is a thorough farmer. They have four children, John, Jacob, Mary A. and Daniel, all married except Jacob, who resides at home; John and Mary live in Springfield, and Daniel in this township. Bill was drafted into the US Navy in World War II and served aboard Liberty/Cargo ships in the Atlantic. In one convoy all 13 ships were torpedoed, but only Bill's ship remained afloat and returned to port. Bill md. Eloise Jane Jordan, born March 13, 1920, at Saint Raphael Church, Springfield, Ohio. She is the daughter of William E. and Catherine Ann (Madden), while in the service. After discharge, Bill went to work for OSU where he became assistant farm manager for crops until retirement Jan. 1, 1980. With carpentry as a hobby, Bill made each of his four daughters their own distinct minature doll house. School and received her nurse's training at Mt. Carmel Hospital, Columbus, in 1924. Her family knew her as
Katherine McKenzie and is remembered for her remarkable singing voice at Saint Joseph Church, Circleville. Her aunt, Sister Mary Alonzo CSC, was a member of the religious who operated this hospital, so Julia joins the order as a nurse during the years, 1924-27, she worked at Mt. Carmel Hospital. Sister Mary Teresina was to serve in many assignments in Indiana and Illinois for the rest of her 76 years, being retired only the last year of her life. Her community Obituary states that "Sister Mary Tere¬ sina, CSC, entered the Congregation of the Sisters of
the Holy Cross on Sept. 24, 1927, coming from Columbus, Ohio. Sister received the Habit on Aug. 15, 1928, and
was professed on Aug. 15, 1930, and died at Saint Mary's Convent, Notre Dame, Indiana, March 28, 1973, fortified

Michael, was born July 14, 1842, and according to the Circleville Democrat and Watchman of Feb. 11, 1887, in Michael's obituary it states that he was "born in County Donegal, Ireland, and came to this county when a youth. In December 1961 he enlisted in Co. E., 73rd 0. V. I. and served a term of enlistment... He was elected Jack¬ son Co. Trustee... an industrious, quiet man and good citizen, greatly respected in the community where he lived." Michael and Theresa had lived near Willliamsport when he died Feb. 4, 1887, with burial at Saint Joseph Cem. In 1883 Gabe and Laura took their two firstborn, Gus and the baby, Sarah, to Kansas in a wagon train. The
purpose was to link up with other McKenzie cousins already there, but not finding a good job, they returned the next year. Sarah was a frail child and rode on a pillow on the wagon bed. Gus, as a young boy, remembers the return trip with an¬ other wagon train a year later and sitting around the campfire watching the fire gleaming off the red eyes of wolves at night. Gabriel was struck by a car while crossing West Broad Street to visit his son, Alonzo. He lived several days and died June 21,1927, at Mt. Carmel Hospital. Laura died Nov. 9, 1945, in Marion, and is buried beside Gabe in Saint Joseph Cemetery, Columbus, in the Saint Joseph Section. Lawrence and Alma lived on adjoining farms near Leistville, Ohio, and travelled together to school on the same wagon/bus. Both are grads of Pickaway Town¬ ship School in 1927. He worked in Cincinnati, where their marriage was celebrated. Shortly thereafter they returned to Pickaway County to engage in farming. Besides farming, Lawrence in 1943 became janitor at Pickaway Township and served as Clerk of Pickaway Township Trustees from1948 through 1975. In 1960 he was elected to the Logan Elm School Board, for whom he was their Clerk for eight years. Alma was a homemaker and her hobby was flower gar¬ dening. She and Lawrence are the parents of Barbara, Beverley Chegwidden, Larry and Chuck. McKenzie, Augustus "Gus" Stanislaus, born May 7, 1881, on Feb. 12, 1907, married Margaret Maud Wright, daughter of George Washington Wright and Eliza Ellen Dopp. Father Wm. McDermott witnessed their marriage at Holy Family Rectory, Columbus. After Josephine's death Maggie took instructions and became Catholic. Maggie was born Apr. 20, 1887, at Ripley, W. Virginia. She was an 17 year old graduate of Clinton Township High School. Since she passed the standard "Boxwell Test" Maggie had plans to become a teacher. When she was offered a teaching position many, many miles away by horse and buggy, she turned it down, not wanting to lose her future husband. The newlyweds were ambitious people and lived early in Franklin County, and in Worthington, where Laura and Anna were born. They raised their nine children on Rt. 310 after moving in 1926 from 3 acres on Tremont
Road, just noth of Lane Avenue. Previously Gus worked for Sciote Country Club and took care of the golf course. In the winter he sprinkled the tennis courts to make ice rinks from 1918-20. He cut the golf course with a triplex pulled with his team of horses. Gus was a contractor - digging cellars and grading cellars in the Upper Arlington area. This was prior to 1926 when he also used slip scrapers for housing developments. He hired a number of men and teams of horses. Apparently successful, Gus developed ulcers, so decided to buy a 100 acre farm just south of Johnstown
on State Route 310 in Licking County. The family hosted both McKenzie and Wright family reunions for many years.
Maggie and Gus raised their family of ten children on their homestead: Josephine, Laura, Anna Reich, Ida
Crow, George, Margaret, Grace Bowman, Winifred, Hugh and Thomas. Only Tom was born there. Being very education minded, the six youngest daughters all graduated from Alexandria High School. Maggie taught Gus the remainder of his deprived education. She taught her children many songs and school cheers that she composed herself. McKenzie, Elizabeth Sarah, born July 21, 1891, became a professed Religious Nun, Sister Mary Christopher SC, of the Sisters of Charity. She died June 30, 1941, at the Mount Saint Joseph Infirmary, and is buried at the Mount Saint Joseph Cemetery, Cincinnati, Ohio. The Archives of Mount Saint Joseph sent the following about Sister Mary: "She was a resident of Circleville at the time of her entrance into the Community on Jan. 28, 1917, that she had received a high school education and about one year of Normal (Advanced Education), that she became a teacher during her preparation and was professed on Aug. 15, 1919. "Sister Mary Christopher, SC, taught for ten years,
1918-28, at Holy Name School, Cleveland, Ohio, then moved Guardian Angels School, Detroit. At this Michigan parish school, she taught and also served as the 'Local Superior' for her Community, 1928-34. From 1934-35
Sister Mary served as teacher at Saint Leo School, Detroit." "From 1935-41 we find Sister Mary Christopher living at the Motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity, overlooking the Ohio River at Mount Saint Joseph's, where she was the Procuratrix. She died at the young age of almost 50 on July2, 1941. Uncle Nick often came out to help his brother Gus at the Scioto Golf Course and Maggie with cooking for their large family. He would stay for some time and would go to the barn for 'spiritual' nourishment as his family knew he

McKenzie, Francis Edward, born Apr. 27,1916, on June 5, 1941, married Mary Margaret Grove, born Feb. 26,
1918, daughter of Elmer and Blanche (Nelson) Grove. Mary is a 16 year old grad of Sacred Heart High School, Columbus, in 1934. She worked for the WPA and the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Since her family was unable to pay her senior tuition, Mary paid it out of her earned money with her early employment. Francis was employed at Timkin Roller Bearing Co. as a screw machine operator (automatic) tending four machines used in the process of making cones and cups used in the aviation industry. On Dec. 12, 1942, Frank was inducted in the US Army
and served in the Infantry as a rifleman performing various duties in assaulting and holding enemy posi¬ tions in the North African and Italian Campaigns. During Francis' two year tour of duty in WW II he was never able to be home on leave. Mary and two lady boarders shared the rent of Mary's house. She worked for the Quartermaster at Fort Hayes, Columbus, and went to the downtown theatres to sell war bonds to patriotic citizens coming to the movies.
Frank's separation date is Nov.9, 1944. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, the Bronze Star
and the Purple Heart. After his discharge he worked as a car inspector for Penn Central RR, later Conrail. Mary retired from Westinghouse after working for 31 years. | McKenzie, Francis Edward (I45642)

McKenzie, Francis S., according to the "Pickaway Co. History," page634, relates that Frank "born April 2, 1862,...was reared in Pickaway Co. and secured an excellent public school education. He has always devoted
himself to agricultural pursuits. He is manager and part owner of the homestead farm...1471/2 acres" in 1906.
At some point in his life, Frank moves to Bakersfield, Calif, for health reasons after he and Mary sold the farm.
Their nephew was already there. When they moved west is not known. Frank died there on Nov. 9, 1915, and Mary,
Sept., 1919.

McKenzie, Frank Charles, born Nov. 3, 1883, and much of his biography is taken from his obituary in the Pend-
leton East_Oregon Newspaper of June 9,1956. Frank attended the Jesuit Saint Xavier College, Cincinnati, with the intention of studying for the priesthood. "In 1905 Frank moved to Aberdeen, Washington, then in 1906 to Pendleton (Oregon) to work for the old PendletonTribune." On Nov. 5, 1908, he married Georgia L. O'Daniel and "they moved to Hermiston, Oregon, in 1909, to work for the Newport Construction Co. He later was a partner with H. T. Frazier in the Oregon Hardware and Implement Co. from1912-40." Georgia was born March 14, 1889. Frank or Mac is best known as "Mayor of Hermiston from 1914-22, and 1933-46. In addition he served eight years as City Recorder and Municipal Judge." The purpose of Frank's going west in 1905 was to relieve his chronic hayfever and allergies. Hermiston was a dry climate. He and Georgia were the parents of three sons: George, Gerald and Francis. in Glenns Ferry, Idaho. She is the daughter of James and Maude () Pearson. George worked as a Shell Oil distributor, then moved in 1937 to Tillamook, Oregon, where he raised his six children and spent the rest of his remarkable life. From a Texaco Station he went into a partnership for the Studebaker, Pontaic and the International Harves¬ ter tractor/truck agencies before WW II. After WW II George bought out his partner, Mr. Hadley, and acquired the Oldsmobile and Cadillac dealerships. He and his wife have six children: Michael, Joan Crall, Katherine, James, Gail Eder and Mark. George died May 19, 1984, age74. McKenzie, Hannah Frances, born July 20, 1883, received her college education at Ohio University, Athens, Ohio.
The following tribute to Hannah is taken from the December, 1966, issue of the "Home Review", which states that "Miss McKenzie began teaching at the (Ohio Soldiers and Sailors Orphans) Home(in Xenia) in 1925 and continued teaching elementary and junior high grades until she retired June 30, 1953, (almost at age 70). She resided in Columbus until she died July 1, 1966." This home is now called the Ohio Veterans Childrens' Home/OVCH.
Hannah is remembered "for originating the Decoration Day March and produced a yearly Christmas pageant which included the band, choir, and both high school drama students. Last year (1965) she presented the Home with

McKenzie, Herbert Aloysius, born Nov. 8,1925, reports in a June 1984 letter that he "entered the US Army in 1943, served in Europe in the 743rd Tank Battalion as a tank driver. I was wounded slightly in Germany and was discharged Jan. 2, 1946." Herb continues, "I graduated from Lancaster Business College and went to work for the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio. I married Luann in July (25), 1950."Lu Ann Robinette, born Apr. 29, 1929, is the daughter of James Loyal and Mary Margaret (Bauman) Robinette. The three oldest children were born in Ashtabula,
Ohio. The McKenzie family has lived in the Winchester and Lexington, Kentucky, areas since 1956. Herb had
worked in management with the water treatment and landfill dept. Lu Ann and Herb's eight children are Marilyn Nelson, Rita Foster, Carol Carter, Laura Powell, Patricia Verber, Michael, Theresa and Thomas. Herb retired in 1980 after heart attacks and now operates a package store.
Herbert A. McKenzie, 78, widower of Luann Robinette McKenzie, died Saturday, May 29, 2004 at his residence. He was retired from Kentucky American Water Company and Winchester Municipal Utilities. A native of Lancaster, OH, he was born November 8, 1925, son of the late John I. and Louise Brembeck McKenzie.
He was a member of Mary Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, VFW, and the American Legion Post #8. He served in the US Army during WWII with the 743rd Tank Battalion where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was a Purple Heart recipient.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, June 2, 2004 at Mary Queen of the Holy Rosary with Rev. John Moriarty officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. His grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Friends may call from 3-5 and 7-9 PM Tuesday at the W.R. Milward Mortuary-Southland. Rosary services at 8:30 PM, American Legion memorial at 7:00 PM.

on April 26, 1875, at Saint Joseph Church, Circleville, married Margaret Ellen Ward, born May10, 1856, at Minerton in Vinton Co., Ohio. Leo died Sept. 5, 1922, and Margaret, May 25, 1951, with burial at Saint Joseph Cemetery, Circleville. He had lived on the family farm 75 years. "The Pickaway County History," page 816, states that
"Margaret was the daughter of Patrick and Mary (Murphy) Ward, both of whom were born in Ireland... She obtained her education in the public schools of Circleville and later became a teacher, following the profession through two years." Margaret "is a woman of remarkable business capacity and much respected by all who know her. On account of Mr. McKenzie being an invalid, many unusual cares have been placed on her shoulders."
Leo and his wife raise their family of ten on their 87 acre farm in Pickaway Township. Their children are

Margaret joined the US Army Air Force in 1943 and in 1944 received two battle stars for outstanding service in the Battles of Rheinland and Central Europe. Major McKenzie served on the Inspector General's Team as the only lady to inspect military hospitals around the world. Margaret retired with the rank Lt. Col. in 1962 from the US Air Force. She worked for 11 years as an educational coordinator at Mount Carmel Hospital,

Jerry started the twelveth grade, worked for the Strawboard Works, then moved to Monessen, Pa., where he worked first for Page Steel and Wire, later with Pittsburgh Steel Co. Jerry married Elizabeth Betts, born Dec. 18, 1887, in Gallatin, Pa. He met Elizabeth at a shoe store, where she was a clerk. Before their marriage on April 17, 1907, in St. Leonard Ch., Monessen, Jerry and Elizabeth both gave much of their wages to their parents for family support, which was the custom then. The four McKenzie children are Estelle Swade, James, John and Henry. McKenzie household in June 1880, Wilkesville Township," according to the 1880 Census. The March 8, 1923, issue of The Circleville Union
Herald lists the obituary of Tom, stating that "In early life Tom was a farmer, but later in life became an engi¬ neer, having served in that capacity for a number of years in this city and in Pennsylvania." A grandson says Tom never lived in Pennsylvania, but his son Jerry did. Tom was a stationary engineer who fired the steam
boilers at the Strawboard Works in Circleville. He and Jane are the parents of ten: Mary Wilkens, Jerry, Hannah Frances, M. Agnes Adams, Cecilia Schneider, Thomas James, John, Julia Catherine (Sister Mary Teresina CSC) and Rose Elizabeth/infant. Tom died March 5, 1923, age 73, and Hanna, five days later on March 10, 1923. Pfeiffer, Agnes Cecilia (Ward), born Sept.19, 1899, became an artist working in oils and painting clay dishes and vases, trimming them in gold leaf trim. Many of these pieces were done for family members and survive in excellent condition at Margaret's home. Agnes married Francis N. Pfeiffer, born ------------1891, on April18,1918, at Saint Joseph Church, LaRue, Ohio. Frank was the son of Michael and Anne Pfeiffer, Marion. Two children are born of this marriage, Maxine and Margaret Ellen. Agnes and Francis later divorce. She and her young girls then lived in the Ward family home. Agnes and her father, Frank Ward, operated a general store and gas station in Marion next to their home. The Wards at one time owned 500 acres of land near the Killdeer Wilderness Preserve north of Marion. Frank died Dec.22, 1973 and Agnes, Aug.23, 1988, with burial at Saint Mary Cemetery, Marion. | Ward, Agnes Cecilia (I45916)
