301 A national miner was fatally injured when run over by a Cumberland and Pennsylvania Railroad coal train in sight of his home and five others were injured in two automobile accidents last night. The miner, who died at Miner's Hospital, Frostburg, at 11:15 p.m., a few hours after being hit, was Gibson Matthews, 41. A miner at coal mine 17 of the Consolidation Coal Company located in Klondike, Matthews had spent the afternoon away from home and was on his way back, taking a commonly used shortcut along the railroad tracks, when he was struck. His left leg was amputated below the knee. A train crew called a Frostburg ambulance to take Matthews to the hospital. Matthews is survived by his mother, Mrs. Viola Matthews, of Pekin; his wife, Mrs. Stella Crawford Matthews, and four children, Pvt. Gibson DeWayne Matthews, Camp Edwards, Mass.; LaVerne, Joan, and Dale, at home.

310 Aaron McKenzie

Aaron McKenzie was born in Maryland in 1792. He married Hannah Johnson on 10 MAR 1819 and together they had (at least) five children (and probably seven) (1):

1.Daniel McKenzie
Born 1817
Married Sarah (Sallie) Spencer 27 MAR 1847 in Allegany County
Had children Hannah, Henry, John Franklin, Annette, George and Newton
Died 23 SEPT 1896 in Cresaptown, Maryland

2.Silas (Cyrus) Johnson McKenzie
Born 13 Mar 1830
Married Sarah Elizabeth Spencer in 1859

3.Aaron William McKenzie
Born 16 Dec 1830
Married Margaret Ann Martin
Had children Hannah, George, Percy, Lavina, Taylor, James, Charles Walter and John Burr

4.John Ephriam McKenzie
Born 1835
Married Mary Alice Martin
Had children Aaron B., Charles Winfield, John W. and Horace Russell

5.Samuel McKenzie

Aron McKinsey (actual spelling) first appears in the 1820 census. (3) He is listed as the head of household. His age is given as being between twenty-six and forty-five. His wife is also listed in the same age category. There was one female child in the household, whose age is listed as being less than ten years old.

Aaron McKinsey appears next in the 1830 census. (4) At that time the records reflect that he had two male children under the age of five living at home, one male between the age of five and ten, one female between the age of five and ten and another female between the age of ten and fifteen.

The 1840 census (5) also shows Aaron McKinsey living in Election District 6 in Allegany County. There was one male under the age of five in his household, two males between the age of five and ten, one male between the age of fifteen and twenty, one female between fifteen and twenty and another female between twenty and thirty.

Aaron McKenzie was listed in the 1850 Census for Allegany County. (6) He was fifty-eight at the time his wife, Hannah, was fifty-seven years old. He was working as a laborer. Cyrus (age 21), Aaron (age 20) and John E. (age 18) were still living at home. Susan Baird, age seventeen, and listed as a teacher was living with them along with Emily _______, age 40 and a nineteen year old male. (7)

By the time the 1860 census was taken (8) Aaron and his wife, Hannah and their son, Aaron W. age twenty-four had moved to Hampshire, Virginia (now West Virginia). Aaron was sixty-six years old (which is off by two years if you compare it with the 1850 census and would have meant that he was born in 1794) and was working as a carpenter. Hannah was fifty-six years old (which also does not coincide with the 1850 census, since she was listed as being fifty-seven on that document). Aaron, Hannah and Aaron W. (9) were all born in the State of Maryland.

The 1860 census also provides us with information on Cyrus (Silas) McKenzie, who was two of Aaron’s sons. (10) He was living close by to his parents, was thirty years old and was living with Sarah E., age seventeen. The census reflects that they had been married in the past year. Silas (as it was listed in this census) was born in the State of Maryland.

Interestingly, the author was experimenting one night with the Ancestry.com census search program when he discovered Aaron McKenzie (b. 1792) and his wife Hannah McKenzie living in Jefferson, Noble County, Ohio in 1870. (11). They were listed as being 78 and 77, respectively. They were residing with John Kyles, age 56, his wife, Mary E., age 50, and their seven children. When you compare the 1860 census with the one from 1870, Aaron and Hannah McKenzie are residing with the Kyles in the Western District, Hampshire County, Virginia. The 1880 Jefferson, Noble County, Ohio census reflects that Mary E. Kyles was now widowed and living with her three youngest children. Aaron and Hannah McKenzie are no longer living in the household, which suggests perhaps that they died in the preceding ten years.

Endnotes

1. The census records in 1820, 1830 and 1840 reflect that Aaron and Hannah had two daughters, assuming that the young females actually living in their household were daughters and not simply female relatives who had come to live with them.

2. In another portion of his notes, Col. MacKenzie states as follows: “J.F.G. (referring to J.F. Grant) said Daniel IV had as children Henry, Frank, George J. (Boss Geo.), Newton, Hannah, Isabel (Belle) and Louise.”

3. 1820 Federal Census, LDS film number 0,193,702, Maryland, Allegany County, Election District 6, page 39 and 40.

4. 1830 Federal Census, LDS film number 0,013,176, Maryland, Allegany County, page 40.

5. 1840 Federal Census, LDS film number 0,013,182, Maryland, Allegany County, Election District 6.

6. 1850 Federal Census, LDS film number 013, 194, Maryland, Allegany County, Election District 6, page 130 of the book.

7. The names are not readable on the microfilm because it appears that someone placed some scotch tape on the record at some time causing the information to be illegible.

8. 1860 Federal Census, LDS film number 805, 350, Virginia, Hampshire County, New Creek Station, Western District, page 296 and 297 of the book.

9. Aaron W. McKenzie appears in the 1900 Census at Maryland, Allegany County, Rawlings Election District No. 7, Supervisor District 4, Enumeration District No. 102. If you do a search on Ancestry.com in the 1900 Federal Census for “Saras” McKenzie, the reference to Aaron and his wife, Margaret, will pop up. The transcriber simply misread the name.

Note from Don Kagle in November, 2014:

Dick and Mike:

Back to Aaron William McK for a sec. I don't have a daughter Susan as a result of the following: 1850 Census for Alleg. Co. Md. Dist 6, has a Susan Baird, 17 b.abt 1833, teacher living with Aaron & Hannah. 1840 census has the total in the household at 9 people. There are no females indicated that would have been seven.

The remains of Aaron McKinzie, who has for the past year been staying at the soldier's home at Marshalltown, were brought here on Saturday evening and the funeral services held at Macksburg, his former home on Sunday." Aaron McKinzie was born on February 18, 1835 in Christian county, Illinois, and died at Marshalltown, Iowa, June 23, 1905. At 11 years of age he came to Iowa with a sister and made his home in Story county until 1858, when he came to Madison County. In 1860 in answer to the President's call he enlisted and for 4 years and 7 months served his country. Mr. McKinzie was married three times, his wives all having preceeded him to the life beyond. He leaves to mourn 7 boys and five girls and several grandchildren and a host of friends. The funeral was held at the Baptist church in Macksburg Sunday, June 25th at 3 p. m. (of which he was a member) counducted by the pastor, Rev. H. A. Cross , assisted by Rev. Trueblood of the M. E. church. A large congregation was in attendance and the house was not large enough to accommodate all. The remains were laid to rest in the cemetery at this place (Macksburg). The house was appropriately draped and decorated under the auspices of the W. R. C. assisted by the old soldiers, the pall bearers being from the boys of the sixties.

"In 1860, in answer to the President's call, he enlisted, and for 4 years and 7 months served his country. [He enlisted as a Private in Co. A of the 39th Iowa Infantry on Aug 14, 1862, and was mustered into federal service on Sept 8, 1862. He was taken prisoner at Allatoona on 10/5/1864. He mustered out of the service on May 26, 1865, in Davenport.]

The following email was circulated by Dick MacKenzie in December, 2013:

All: A few items in response to the documents that Priscilla furnished to Bobbie the other day:

The Jennie Guilliams she mentions is apparently the one daughter that Aaron had with his first wife, Sarah. E. Fields. Jennie first appears in 1860 with Aaron and 2nd spouse Mary as 4 year old Laura J. McKenzie. In 1870, she's 14 year old Louisa Mckinzie, with Aaron and 3rd wife Elizabeth. Not clear what her first name really was, but Jennie must have been her middle name, and I've seen a DOB of 21 Dec 1858. Her half-brother John appears to be the one child by the 2nd spouse Mary Elizabeth Knowles, John William Mckinzie DOB 28 Dec 1860, although he appears in 1870 as Johnathan, 11, which he couldn't be as he didn't appear in 1860. If it was this child where Mary died during childbirth, then Aaron waited another 5+ years to marry Elizabeth Jane Shaffer 11 Jul 1866, which seems a long time, so maybe the child also died and it was after 1860.

As for the children of Aaron and Elizabeth, the family document stops after Malinda b. 1875, while there were apparently 5 more children as follows:

Benton Clement b. 4 Apr 1877
Anna Rebecca b. 19 Nov 1878
James Aaron b. 20 Aug 1880
Joseph R. b. 20 Nov 1881
Samuel Logan b. 14 Nov 1884

That makes a total of 13 -- not a bad day's work!

Incidentally, I note that we spell a number of females in this branch as "Melinda" while everything I've seen, including headstones, shows "Malinda" as the spelling. I found the photo and the story about James Aaron's migration and struggle to earn a living quite interesting.

And Bobbie, don't go into hiding! We love your contributions.

Dick

Another email from Dick MacKenzie from the same time period, December, 2013, is set forth below:

All: Sounds like this is coming together nicely. First, a word for Bobbie on Henry M. McKenzie, who married Sarah Easley. Yes, he was son of Henry of Eli of Daniel of John. Marriage was in Dearborn Co., IN (not MI!), which is where Henry M. was born. Henry his father settled in the village of Kelso in Dearborn Co. after a brief stay in Cincinnati after leaving MD, and remained there throughout his life. That is also where Eli died (while visiting Henry or having moved there, we'll never know).

Re Aaron and the Feb. 18 birth date, I think we can say with certainty that this is Aaron son of Aaron and Cecily Logsdon, and let's hope the 1835 date is correct, since that's what's on his tombstone :) Even though the 1850 Census lists him as 16, all the others point to the 1835 year of birth, as well as his Civil War enlistment 14 Aug 1862, showing him as 2

NOTE: For future genealogists who may be interested in this line of McKinzie's. The following is the complete email traffic that was exchanged by the McKenzie Research Group and Priscilla Delventahl (and others) as this line was being sorted out in approximately 2012.

Here goes. There's a lot of information here. Ed. Note: Michael A. McKenzie December 2013:

Hi, guys, I'm passing the buck. I really only got involved because I thought
that I confused the situation by sharing Norma Kramer's information. I can
see from Pat's info here that the confusion is not between two Henrys a
two Aarons but an Aaron of Henry and a JAMES Aaron of Aaron and Malinda. If
not, we have another McKinzie with the birthdate of Feb 18, 1835. Anoth
version of the "same name game". Something that jumped out at me is Cor
Clugston--I wonder if it isn't a misspelling of Logsdon. I've run into that
confusion before.

Sorting this out further is going to lead to thousands more McKenzies from
the line of John of Gabriel and I really want to concentrate on Jonatha
Jesse, Caleb and David. I've found old Jonathan and John Hixonbaugh (father
of Jonathan's wife Catherine m. 1802 Allegany) in Fayette Co, PA so want to
see where that takes me.

Subject: Re: Aaron McKinzie born Feb 18 1835 in Christian County Illinois.

Hi Bobbie - So excited that the Aaron McKinzie line is getting sorted out.
I am going to attach some of the documents I have found plus those that my
husbands mother, Lorene McKinzie Delventhal Burris had saved from the family
information. Please send any comments, I may be able to document.

I have attached a picture taken possibly at a family outing that has a key
to the people in the picture. I hope you can see the numbers. It is of the
James Aaron McKinzie family and some friends.

I have attached the sale of Aaron's property in Christian County Illinois by
Samuel McKinzie

Also, I have attached Laura Viola Mann McKinzie's obituary. She is the wife
of James Aaron McKinzie

In addition, I have attached Mother Burris' notes on the family (Lorene
McKinzie). They are notes as she knew them from the family.

I believe the birthdate for my James Aaron mcKinzie to be Feb 18, 18
that is what Lorene has in her birthday calendar. I have other birthdates
of the family, but I believe this date is the one we need to clear the
record. Early last year the VA gave a headstone for James' grave and some
kind Veterans in the Maxburg area set the stone marking him as a civil war
soldier.

I have tried to find Lena Jessup's parents, but have not had much luck. I
did find an Angeline Mann born in Pa and working as a domestic serva
the 1870, so might have been mother of Lena with Angeline the full name. I
also found a Hezakiah Mann married to Lena in the 1920 census with a
daughter Helen, then in 1930 Lena is listed as wife of Ellis as a Jessu
Perhaps Lena was married more than once.

James Aaron was raised by a family named MeHarie or MaHarie in Maxburg. I
found the MaHarie gravestones but they really aren't related family that I
can find. James Aaron moved his family to Hysham montana where he tried to
raise cattle on land that the government gave to him. Lorene remembers
moving the household by train. Water was not assessable and he had to
supplement their living by being an auctioneer. I do have pictures from the
Hysham newspaper showing his ads. They then moved to Colorado when He
couldn't make a living. His wife, Laura's health was not strong and He
became very discouraged. The girls made their homes and married in the
Denver, Colorado Area. From James forward I have a lot of the related
people, but feel we need to get his generation straightened out.

On Lorene's notes, I have children of Sara E Fields McKinzie but can't seem
to find them. Things like Jennie Guilliams and John McKinzie, half brother.
Then Jennie's children John Shultz, Mary Martin, Dorothy Don Carlos and
finally a Gene Guilliams. Jennie must have married a couple of time
she was from another marriage of Sara.

Please send this information on to Dick and Michael as they have been so
kind to include me in their research. Thanks Priscilla Matthews Ester
Delventhal - Daughter-in-law of Lorene McKinzie Delventhal Burris.
