CRESAPTOWN — Wilma Virginia (Lease) Ware, 82, of Cresaptown, passed away Friday, April 13, 2007, at WMHS -Braddock Campus. Born Feb. 15, 1925, in Pinto, she was the daughter of the late Arlie T. and Byrle (MacKenzie) Lease. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Roy Calvin Ware, and three brothers, Arlie Jr., Reuben, and Buford Lease. She attended Allegany High School before enlisting in the United States Air Corps during World War II, never ceasing to be proud of her military service. She was employed in the Rosenbaum Shoe Department, Heacox Shoe Store, Nobil’s Shoe Store, and the spinning department of Celanese Corp. Wilma was a member of the Ridgeley VFW, the Goodfellowship Club, and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fraternal Order of Eagles 245, of which she was a charter member. Surviving are three daughters, Linda Lewis and husband Bob, Bel Air; Robin Fadley and Kala Dawson, both of Cresaptown; three sisters: Colleen Smith and husband Bill, Corriganville, Donna Mallow, Annapolis, and B. Darlene Lease, Cresaptown; one brother, Paul Lease and wife Flo, LaVale; sisters and brothers-in-law, Delores Lease, Ethel Lease, Joan Ware, Betty Ware, Penny Delawder, and Donald Ware; grandchildren, Bric Lewis and wife Tonya, Darrin Lewis, James and Lonnie Iser, Eric Fadley and wife Tammy, and Shay Kennell and husband Tyler; great-grandchildren, Ember Fadley and Zoe Lewis, and many nieces and nephews that held her in high regard with love. Born Oct. 14, 1923, in Frostburg, she was the daughter of the late Albert Stott and Nellie (Porter) Stott. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Henry Hugh McKenzie; her son, Henry Hugh McKenzie Jr.; and four brothers and two sisters. WINCHESTER, Va. — Linda Kathryn “Kate” (Preston) McKenzie, 59, of Winchester, Va., passed away following a two year battle with cancer on Monday, Sept. 30, 2013, at Blue Ridge Hospice in Winchester, Va. She was born June 14, 1954, in Frostburg, to John “Hack” Preston, of Frostburg and the late Ruth A. (Lindeman) Preston. In addition to her mother, she is preceded in death by a brother, Robert “Bobby” Preston. Kate was a registered nurse for 27 years at Winchester Medical Center, the last 17 of those she was a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) nurse. She was also an alumna of Beall High School (class of 1972) and Allegany Community College. Surviving are her husband of 28 years, Darrell McKenzie; two sons, John Adam Preston McKenzie and wife Jessica and Jeffrey James McKenzie; step-son, Todd McKenzie and wife Jessica; granddaughter, Ryleigh Elizabeth McKenzie; step-granddaughters and grandson, Kaytlyn, Kylie and Nathan McKenzie; brother, John “Nut” Preston and wife Cindy; sisters, Sandra “Sandy” Webber and husband Paul, Donna “Duna” Preston and Ruthie Folk and fiance Kevin Carroll; numerous nieces; nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews and two very special friends, Sue Ann Walker “The Duck” Thorpe and Barrie “Bear” Riese. WINCHESTER, Va. — Paula Marie McKenzie of Winchester, formerly of Wellersburg, Pa., passed away peacefully at her home on June 4, 2019, after a lengthy struggle with rheumatoid arthritis. Born May 27, 1958 in Frostburg Miner’s Hospital as twin #1; she was the daughter of the late Harry "Corky" and Esther (Lechliter) McKenzie, who tragically passed away two days after Paula. She was also preceded in death by her niece, Summer McKenzie; grandson, Cameron McKenzie; and granddaughter, Camberlynn McKenzie. Survived by brother Troy McKenzie and wife Connie, Wellersburg, Pa.; sister Sharon Shaffer and husband Rod, Hyndman, Pa.; twin sister Pauline McKenzie-Hill and husband Rick, Pinellas Park, Fla.; and sister, Tammy (Withers) McKenzie, Hyndman, Pa.; three children, Dillon Hosier, Los Angeles, Calif.; Chase McKenzie and Dustin McKenzie, both of Winchester, Va.; granddaughters Destiny Holle and Heaven McKenzie. Paula was a hairstylist for ten years who, early in her training, practiced on her sisters – not always with the intended result. She worked for 28 years at Berryville Graphics as a prototype book maker and later as administrative assistant. Paula was gregarious, fun-loving, humble, compassionate, generous and kind. In true McKenzie fashion, she was a great storyteller, loved to fish, considered everyone a friend and never a stranger. She and her twin sister Pauline shared a special and uncommon bond that can only be experienced by twins. She was artistic and creative, once winning a vacation to Hollywood, Calif. as the prize for designing the anniversary flag for Berryville Graphics. But most of all, Paula loved children, all children; within hours of meeting her, most were calling her Aunt Paula. A remembrance ceremony will be held at Jim Barnett Park, Rotary Field, Winchester, Va. beginning at 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 13, 2019. A combined service will then be held for Paula and her mother at Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, Inc., 169 Clarence St. Hyndman, Pa. Friends will be received on Friday June 14, 2019 from 6 to 9 pm and Saturday, June 15, 2019 at 10 am. The funeral service will begin at 11 am, with Pastor Ken Haines officiating. Other survivors are five sisters, Mrs. Elenora Winebrenner, Mrs. Myrtle Rice, Mrs. Sarah Bowers and Mrs. Susan Trimble, all of Mt. Born May 16, 1913, in Mount Savage, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Annie (Plummer) Winebrenner. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Cyrus S. Winbrenner, in 1968: two sons, Clinton in 1979, and Francis in 1995; two brothers, Walt and Darb Winebrenner; and two sisters, Jeanette Crowe and Margaret Winebrenner. Surviving are one son, James R. Winebrenner and wife June, Vermilion, Ohio; two daughters, Viola B. Ranham and husband Marvin, Elyria, Ohio, and Cora Skidmore and husband William, Mount Savage; three brothers, Edward Winebrenner and Elwood Winebrenner, both of Mount Savage, and Herman Winebrenner, Stanton, Va.; two sisters, Martha Winebrenner, Frostburg, and Geneva Winebrenner, Mount Savage; 23 grandchildren; and 47 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Winebrenner was viewed in Loraine on Saturday. Her husband, John W. Winebrenner, preceded her in death. Surviving besides her mother are one daughter, Mrs. Virginia Skidmore, Slabtown; two sons, Kenneth Winebrenner, Slabtown, and Carl (Mike) Winebrenner, Cumberland; three sisters, Mrs. Evelyn Cook, Bowie; Mrs. Helen Blank, Mt. Savage, and Mrs. Frances Spiker, Hyndman. Also surviving are a brother, David Powell, Sykesville, 13 grandchildren including Jacque Abucevicz, with whom she resided, and eight great-grandchildren. The body is at the Durst Funeral Home where friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 p,m. and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. George M. Harpold officiating. Interment will be in the Methodist Cemetery, Mount Savage. Murphy Company and was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and the Sodality of the church. She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Clement Miller, Mrs. Gerturde Miller, Mrs. Harry Morin and Mrs. Carl Deolan, all of the city; three sons, Verner J., with whom she resided; Sgt. John, with the Army at Hopewell, VA., and Ralph D. Winner, Short Gap; two sisters, Mrs. Florence Carney, Silver Spring, and Mrs. Catherine Cunningham, Wilkinsburg, Pa.; 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Turtle Creek, Pa. - Joseph W. Winner Sr., 82, of 513 Pennsylvania Avenue, Monroeville, a native of Frostburg, died at his home Saturday. He was born in Frostburg and worked in that area as a coal miner before moving to the Westinghouse Valley area, where he was employed as a machinist in the Westinghouse Electric Company plant for 27 years, prior to his retirement in 1943. He was a member of the Westinghouse Veterans Association. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Lillian Simmons and Mrs. Dorothy Miller; three sons, Joseph Wm. Winner, Jr., Samuel J . Winner and Clifton Winner; five sisters, Mrs. Annie Lucas, Mrs. Clara Youngerman, Miss Agnes Winner, Mrs. Bernice Holland and Mrs. Margaret McKenzie; two brothers, Harry and Frank Winner; eleven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The body is at the Jobe Funeral Home, Turtle Creek, and will remain there until 2 p.m. tomorrow when services will be conducted in McMasters Methodist Church here.

Charles H. Wolfe, 73, prominent local businessman, died Friday night at his home, 1304 Holland Street. A native of Cumberland, he was a son of the late Charles and Sarah (Hite) Wolfe. For many years he operated a meat market on North Centre Street near Bedford Street and his father and grandfather were in the meat business before him. The Wolfe family operated meat markets and slaughter houses in Cumberland for more than 100 years. Mr. Wolfe was a member of Centre Street Methodist Church. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mary E. (MacKenzie) Wolfe; two daughters, Miss Jane Wolfe, at home, and Mrs. Mary Manuel, Fairfield, Calif.; a son, Warren M. Wolfe, St. Louis, and six grandchildren. WOODBINE — In the early hours of May 16, 2019, Linda Giles Bourne, 58, passed away after a long struggle with COPD, at her Woodbine home with her loving husband, Donald Ramsburg, and caring son, Donny, by her side. Linda was a homemaker and a very devoted wife and mother. She loved spending time with her son and loved ones. She always brought a smile and joy to those who were around her. Linda was born in Cumberland, on April 4, 1961, to the late Donald Ellsworth Giles and Hilda Mae (McKenzie) Giles. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Michael Wolford; a half-brother, Gary Giles; a half-sister, Catherine Giles; and her nephew, Francis Scott Giles. Surviving are her husband, Donald N. Ramsburg; son, Donald C. Ramsburg; three full brothers, Donald Giles and wife, Linda, of Cumberland, Francis Giles and wife, Luann, of Frostburg, Kevin Giles and wife, Kathy, of Frostburg; sisters, Lillian Forsythe of Hagerstown and Virginia Mason of Gadsden, Ala.; half-brothers, Eugene Wolford and wife, Linda, of Ohio, and Tommy Giles of Ohio; and half-sister, Patricia Ann Wright and husband, Herman, of Frostburg; and numerous nieces and nephews. Word has been received by Mr. and Mrs. Leo H. Darr, Adamstown, parents of Pfc. Eugene Leo Darr, of the death of their son following a jeep accident in Austria. According to a Department of Army telegram, the county soldier's death occurred Monday. Details were not immediately available pending further notification by the Army. The telegram stated only that death occurred August 9 "partially due to a jeep accident somewhere in Austria." Pfc. Darr would have been 22 years of age in a month. He was born September 9, 1932, and was a graduate of Frederick High School, class of '51. Prior to entering the service he was employed by Three Springs Fisheries, Lily Pons. He entered the service in March of 1953 and received his basic training at Camp Breckenridge, Ky. Since Sept. of last year he had been stationed at Camp St. Johann, St. Johann, Austria, with the 59th Reconnaissance Company. Survivors in addition to his parents include one sister, Arlene Rita Darr, at home. He was member of the Methodist church at Urbana and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Word was received here yesterday of the death of Mr. James Watson at his home in Eckhart after a short illness. The deceased was about 35 years of age and is survived by his wife. Mr. Watson's death was very sudden and unexpected, and came as a shock to his friends and relatives. It seems to have been the result of a relapse of the grip, the deceased having had an attack of the disease, and had recovered. He went out too soon it is thought, and the result was a sudden relapse which terminated in death. The funeral will take place from the residence at Eckhart where the services will be held, after which the remains will be interred in the cemetery at that place. Mr. Watson is survived by a number of brothers and sisters, Mrs. Conrad A. Lapp, of this city, being a sister. Mr. Watson was serving as constable of Eckhart at the time of his death. Worker Is Calm Over Lottery Win
"It doesn't excite me too much, William J. Winebrenner of the Slabtown area of Mt. Savage indicates when he refers to his purchase of a ticket worth 50,000 in the June 2 Maryland State Lottery drawing. "It will make my pension easier though, since I plan to retire when I'm 65 in August," Mr. Winebrenner added. The parents of nine children, Bill and his wife, Eleanor, are lifelong residents of Mt. Savage, where Mr. Winebrenner has been employed at the brickyard in various capacities for 51 years. Mr. Winebrenner's good news concerning his winnings was only slightly offset, by the necessity for surgery which was performed in a local hospital last Thursday. He came home Tuesday and is recuperating well. Of the Winebrenner's nine children, six are married, three are single with one of the latter a sophomore at Mt. Savage High School. No one has as yet officially notified Mr. Winebrenner that his ticket was a winner, he says. He purchased the ducat at a local Safeway market. "1 have won $25 and a couple $5 tickets were winners, the 64-year-old man says, "but this is the first big one." Mr. Winebrenner says he "has no place to go," in response to a question regarding plans. "I have never had a car because I couldn't afford one," he added. At one lime he enjoyed fishing and hunting but has given up those pleasures for two reasons: decline in game and a decrease in activity necessitated by advancing years. Mr. Winebrenner has been purchasing four 50-cent tickets and two $l tickets weekly.

SLABTOWN - William J. "Darb" Winebrenner, 76, died Feb. 14 at Frostburg Community Hospital.
Born Aug. 17, 1913, at Mount Savage, he was a son of the late Harry and Mary Ann (Plummer) Winebrenner.
He retired from Mount Savage Refractories after 51 years of service and was a member of Mount Savage United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his widow, Elnora (Winebrenner) Winebrenner;

Surviving is his wife Shirley (Hyde) McKenzie. They celebrated their 34th wedding anniversary on Oct. 23. He also is survived by two sons, James H. You don't hear about Zion much. It's stuck up along the north shore but way too far north to belong to the stuck-up North Shore. It's almost in that state of outlet malls, head cheese and anorexic dogs chasing mechanical rabbits known as Wisconsin. But Zion oozes personality. My first visit there was on April 1, 1986, when an atheist crashed a city council meeting to ask city fathers to remove God from the city government whose slogan was "God Reigns." While just waiting to write a story about Zion's born-again mayor amid the flag-waving atheist, I witnessed a rock fight between local youths and white-robed Ku Klux Klansmen. Those were wild days for Zion Mayor Howard P. Everline. His phone rang off the hook. He could put Deborah Norville on hold while he chatted with Oprah or Jane Pauley. (Norville was a mere Channel 5 reporter then and Everline logged more air time on the "Today" show than she did.) Everline was a TV star, and Rob Sherman co-starred as "the atheist." It was a marriage made in heaven, or the atheist equivalent. Everline and Sherman engaged in witty banter, the city sold T-shirts. It was fun. Then came the 1987 mayoral race. Everline lost to State Sen. Adeline Geo-Karis. Oprah stopped calling. So did "Today." So did reporters. So did his friends. "I had five phone calls in one year — FIVE!" Everline says. "People dropped me as if I had the plague. I went through a deep depression. I was very bitter." The City of God forgot him. "They're so phony," says Everline, an ordained pastor. "None of the preachers called me after I got out of office." One of the five phone calls he did get was from Sherman. Despite the religious differences, Sherman had become a good friend and was worried the former mayor was depressed enough to attempt suicide. "I considered it," Everline admits openly. "I interviewed 45 places for jobs," Everline adds. He did not get a single offer and made his living through substitute teaching and an 11-acre farm where he and his wife Marge breed ponies. Zion was founded by Australian faith-healer John Alexander Dowie, who dreamed of a holy city of salvation and clean living for generations of Christians. "Hah!" Everline says. "Things aren't what they seem." He tells story after story of drunkenness, adultery, drug use, lies, sex, backstabbing and sloth, making Zion sound more like a "Twin Peaks" episode. "Zion was founded to be a better place," Everline says. "It has repudiated its heritage." That's why Everline stayed home. He didn't go to church (he turned to Channel 38 for his inspiration), avoided restaurants and didn't shop in Zion. Even after he came out of his funk and would run into people, Everline would not be phony. "They'd say, 'How are you?'" Everline says. "And I'd say, 'What do you care? You haven't bothered to call. Where were you when I needed you?'" He predicts a few Zion residents are bound for hell, a place he plans to avoid because "it's too crowded for me." Apparently, some people agree with him about the state of Zion. They asked Everline, 61, to run for mayor again against Geo- Karis and city commissioner Billy McCullough. Everline needed 35 signatures to get on the ballot, he got a little more than 40. "I did it myself, practically all on Sunday," says Everline, who had not returned to City Hall since his defeat. "I went in the back door to turn my petition in." He is not running on some issue. "Just my very presence is an issue," Everline notes. He knows he will be a huge underdog in the Feb. 26 primary election. "I can live with it or without it, but I think the people deserve a choice," he says. He also thinks Sherman will become born-again some day. Win or lose, Everline will hear from me before next Christmas.
