Note on AllCoGenWeb on September 16, 2013:
Ida Mae CROWE was born on 27 Jun 1890 and died on 11 Aug 1977 in
Westernport, Allegany Co., MD at age 87. She had my grandfather, Oliver Crowe Smith, as a single mother, in 1911. She never married his father. According to the
family his name was Billy Smith, and he wanted to marry her all their lives.
He would visit and spend time with my grandfather when he was a child. When
Oliver was about to marry my grandmother, Mae told them if he would marry
with his father's last name of Smith, that she would marry Billy Smith. She
never did, and when I tried to get her to talk about it, she would not. There
are several Billy Smith's in the area at that time (big surprise), so I
don't know for sure which one is him. On the censuses from the early 1900's, Mae
and Oliver live with her parents, and Oliver is listed as Charles's son,
then grandson. My tree on Ancestry is Smith-Metcalf 2012, if you want to take
a look. A sad story and a mystery that I may never be able to solve. I also
wonder why John F. and Elizabeth Porter Crowe died the same year, 1835. Was
there an epidemic of some sort in Allegany County then? Their son, Thornton,
was raised by the Porters, his mother's people.
Note to Genie Ragan on September 25, 2013:
So sad that she would never tell us about him, or let herself take a chance on happiness. My grandfather, Oliver, did not have an easy time of it growing up the child of a single mother in the early 1900's. At least you have provided me with a chance to fill in that terribly short branch on my family tree!! My dad, and his brothers and sister were always told that Mae was a friend of the family, who raised Pap after his parents died. My father was grown, and we had moved to Kentucky, before my mother told him who Mae was. Small town, where folks know more than they say, right? I was a young teenager then, and from that time on, always signed my cards for her, from your great-granddaughter. She never forgot a birthday, even after we moved to Kentucky in 1970. The very last birthday card she sent me before she died, she finally signed "your great-grandmother". She always lived with Oliver, and helped to raise her grandchildren, without letting them know who she really was. Just hard to understand.
William "Billy" SMITH was born on 28 Jan 1879.

WESTERNPORT, Md. — Belva Louise McKenzie, 85, of Westernport, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009, at Moran Manor Nursing Home. Born April 5, 1923, in Frostburg, she was the daughter of the late Edgar and Catherine (Glotfelty) Michael. Her husband in 1979, Clifton McKenzie, and also her first husband in 1954, Shelby Ritchie, and a brother, Walter Michael, preceded her in death. Belva graduated from Grantsville High School and earned her Registered Nurses’ degree at Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, Cumberland. Putting her career on hold, Belva became a devoted homemaker, raising five daughters before continuing with her nursing career. Belva was a caring and compassionate nurse at Potomac Valley Hospital, where she worked until retirement. Religion was an important part of Belva’s life. She was an active member of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, Westernport, where she attended regularly before becoming homebound. Belva valued the friendships of those she had worshiped with and looked forward to visits from Pastor Sally, as Mom considered her one of her own. Belva’s life was centered around her family. Nothing made her happier than everyone getting together at her house. We will cherish the many happy memories that we embrace. Besides her family, she loved flowers, especially pansies and houseplants. She also enjoyed creating delicious meals for her loved ones. She made beautiful quilts, afghans, rugs and needlework, which she generously gave as gifts to her children and grandchildren to treasure. Belva was a wonderful role model for her daughters. She endured many struggles, yet maintained a strength that only few possess. We are fortunate to have grown up with such a special lady, but we are even luckier to be able to call her “Mom.” She leaves behind her daughters, Susan Spencer and husband John of Columbia, Barbara Winebrenner and husband Darrell of Westernport, Linda Bender and husband Gene of Cumberland, Lois Taylor and husband Bob of Westernport, and Janet Marsh of Westernport. I. forgot to include this, not that it matters all that much:
I found in the Garrett County news a few mentions about Fannie Savage visiting her sister and aged mother, Susie Dawson and Sarah McKenzie. There was also mention that in 1926 and 1928 Susie was seriously ill. Susie was born Oct. 1862, according to the 1900 census in Rawlings, already widowed; Sarah, Apr 1842 (which is what we have) spelled MacKenzie. In the Garrett Co. 1910 census, still living together. No children with them. Sarah says she bore 6 children, 4 living; Susie says 1 born, 0 living. No obit for any Dawson in 1928. 1930 census, Sarah's living with the Savages. Still have nothing for Mary, but Don says Ancestry has her connected to Joseph Lintz. I did find a Joseph Lintz in the 1880 census, single, living with other than family. Could find neither him nor Mary after that time. Sheryl Kelso October, 2012. | Spencer, Sarah Elizabeth (I01355)

While at work in the Tyson mine of the Maryland Coal Company, Floyd Garlitz, aged 23, was instantly killoed yesterday by a fall of rock. He was in the act of setting a prop when a "horseback" gave way, crushing him to death. The rock had piled upon top of him and it was sometime before miners could remove it. Garlitz came to Lonaconing about three weeks ago and boarded with Martin J. Eichhorn in Detmold, but for a long time had been employed in the brickyard near Piedmont. His home was in Clairton, Pa. He is survived by his father, Jean (sic:Gene) Garlitz, and a stepmother of Clairton, one sister at Piedmont, and a grandmother, Mrs. Joseph Weinburner (Winebrenner?) of Carlos. The body will remain at Eichhorn's until the arrival of the father for final arrangements. Cumberland Evening Times, Thursday, January 13, 1916

While returning in a wagon to their home along Tonoloway Mountain, four miles west of Hancock, about 8 o'clock at night, John McCusker, his son, Claude McCusker, and William Pryor, who was in the wagon with them, were shot from ambush. John McCusker is the most severely hurt, having been shot in the back of the head, in the temple and in the back and shoulders. Dr. James A. West, of Hancock, who was hastily summoned, picked about 25 bird shot from his wounds. Claude McCusker was peppered in the face, as was also Pryor, who may loose his eyesight. Dr. West thiuks the sight of one eye is gone, as a shot penetrated the eyeball. James Stottlemyer, who was also in the party, was unhurt. The men were all in a merry mood and left Hancock shortly after dark in McCusker's wagon. They postively refuse to state who shot them, but it is understood a young man who had been husking corn in a field along the road is accused. The Hagerstown Mail, October 26, 1900.
James Thomas Stottlemeyer, 74, Cresaptown, died yesterday. Mr. Stottlemeyer came from a family of Western Maryland pioneers. His father, Andrew Jackson Stottlemeyer, was a soldier in the Union army in the Civil War and of pronounced native ability. Before him the family connection was prominent in the Hancock territory. He was a nephew of the late former County Commissioner Joseph B. Stottlemeyer of Little Orleans. Dewalt Stottlemeyer in 1824 at Hancock, was an undertaker's assistant when John Johnson, father of the great Reverdy Johnson, died suddenly at the old Light House in that place. John Johnson was chancellor of Maryland. Mr. Stottlemeyer in the days of the old Round Top cement mill near Hancock, worked for the tunnel contractors. He was a member of the Hancock Methodist church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Bertha Grant Stottlemeyer, ten sons, Charles, Michael, Kenneth, Ralph, and Paul Stottlemeyer, all of Cresaptown; John and William Stottlemeyer, Cumberland: Roy Stottlemeyer, Vandergrift, Pa., and Jackson Stottlemeyer, Detroit; five daughters, Mrs. Ella Douthitt, Mrs. Mary Cecil and Mrs. Ethel Skelly, Cresaptown; Miss Frances Stottlemeyer, Cumberland; and Miss Grace Stottlemeyer, at home; two sisters, Mrs. Laura Stineback and Mrs. Mollie Sutton of Baltimore; 23 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Who was the First Garlitz of our Family History? (from Christian Garlitz family History at http://www.garlitz.org/familytree.html)
Unfortunately, there is uncertainty as to the actual name of the Garlitz Family progenitor. Most family historians have identified him as Christian Garlitz, referred to in the listings as Christian the First (I). There are several inconsistent historical accounts that include the Garlitz progenitor: Jacob Brown's Miscellaneous Writings of 1896, Charles E. Hoye's article of 1935, St. Ann Mission History of 1930, and presumably the 1790 census. All of these sources were written in good faith, but they must be reconciled with fact and with each other.
Brown's, the earliest record, does not give our progenitor a name but rather records him as the unnamed father of John, Henry, and Christian Garlitz. "-------Garlitz, father of Christian, Henry and John, and two sisters, was born in Montgomery county, Md. During, or near the close of the Revolutionary War, he removed with his family westward and located in the southeastern part of Somerset, (then Bedford,) Co. Pa. Here his family grew up, Henry and John remained in Pennsylvania, and Christian stepping over the line into his native State."
Writing thirty nine years later, Hoye identifies this unnamed Garlitz as Christian Garlitz. "Christian Garlitz I, soon after the American Revolution, moved from Montgomery County, Maryland to what is now Greenville Township, Somerset County, Pa. He settled just north of the Maryland line and was one of the first settlers of that township, then well forested and a fine hunting ground. In the census of 1790 Christy Garlick is listed in Bedford (now Somerset) County with a family of five males and three females. Three of Christians sons were Christian, John, and Henry."
The 1920 History of St. Ann Mission includes the background of Christian Garlitz (III), one of the mission's founders. Based on interviews with the Garlitz parishioners, the writer identifies Christian Garlitz III's father as John Garlitz and recounts that the Garlitz family claim him as the first Garlitz in the area (now Garrett County, MD & Somerset County, PA). This we know to be incorrect. The writer most likely erred when recording the Garlitz family testimony for they certainly knew that the father of Christian (III), that is their grandfather, was Henry Garlitz. The John Garlitz they spoke of was the man they believed to be the first Garlitz settler in the area. We do not know if their story was correct or not, though no records exist pointing to a John Garlitz as the first settler.
Finally, we have the 1790 census. Here we find a Christly Garlick and two Hendrey Garlets. It appears that Hoye referred to the census in deducing that the unnamed Garlitz of Brown's account was Christian, assuming that Garlick was a variation of Garlitz and Christly of Christian. This may be the case and that has been widely accepted. Still, Garlitz family genealogists have had to contend with the census record of Hendrey Garlets and the fact that the Brown history did not conclude that Christly Garlick was the same man as the unnamed Garlitz. Therefore they seek to reconcile Hoye, Brown and the census by naming this early Garlitz as Hendrey Christian Garlitz or simply Christian I. (Hendrey is spelled variously Heinrich, Henrich, Henry) To include the St. Ann Mission account on the father of Christian (III), the first settler is named John Hendrey Garlitz which neatly takes care of the second Hendrey of the census as well as the John story. Presumably this John Garlitz traveled to Western Pennsylvania as an older man with his married son Christian I.
In the end we are unable to reconcile the facts, because they, to this date, simply have not been discovered. Therefore we can only reconcile the stories. Thus, for the present, the history presented on this website lists the first Garlitz in the area, the one who came from Prussia, as John Hendrey Garlitz. The Garlitz to whom all the family histories are traced is Hendrey Christian Garlitz or Christian I. The great hunter of folklore is Christian II. And the convert to the Catholic faith and the settler of Avilton, MD, is Christian III. | Garlitz, Hendrey Christian (I12363)
