John W. Werner, 51, of Salisbury, died Wednesday, May 3, 1995 at Meyersdale Medical Center. Born Feb. 1, 1944 in Meyersdale, he was a son of Lucille (McKenzie) Werner, Salisbury, and the late Carl James Werner. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, West Salisbury. A heavy equipment operator, he was also a member of the VFW Home Aid Association and the Sons of the American Legion. Surviving are his wife, the former Janice Kay Green of Frostburg, Md.; two sons, Troy Werner, Meyersdale; and John Thomas Werner, Frostburg; three daughters: Johnna Werner, Frostburg; Melissa Jones, Meyersdale; and Carla Wiley, Cresaptown, Md.; a sister, Dixie Spiker of Somerset, and five grandchildren. Friends were received at the Newman Funeral Home, Salisbury, on Friday. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Saturday at St. Michael's Catholic Church with the Rev. Carl J. Werner of Salisbury died March 8 in the Oakland Veterans Administration Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was 62. Mr. Werner was born January 20, 1909, in Finzel, Md., the son of the late John T. and Margaret Caton Werner. He leaves his wife, Lucille McKenzie Werner of Salisbury; a son, John W. of Salisbury, and a daughter, Mrs. Dixie Spiker, also of Salisbury. He also is survived by four sisters, Mrs. Margaret Race of Baltimore, Mrs. Kathleen Meyers of Somerset RD, and Dorothy Mosholder and Mrs. Edna Snyder, both of Rockwood RD, and nine grandchildren. He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church of West Salisbury, a veteran of World War II, a member of the Salisbury American Legion and Veteran of Foreign Wars posts. Requiem high mass will be sung Friday at 10 a.m. by the Rev. Father John J. Marshall, and interment will be in St. Michael's Cemetery, Salisbury. A 39-yr-old Avilton man was found dead yesterday afternoon in the basement of his home. James Franklin Green Jr., according to police, was found hanging from a beam in the basement. They said he had been in ill health and was depressed. The father of six children reportedly told his eldest daughter, who is 19, that he intended to take his life. About 2:30 p.m. the daughter heard him in the basement. She called State Police who sent Tfc. Lloyd E. Dutton to the Green home. The trooper found the man hanging from a rope that had been placed around a beam in the basement. Dr. James Feaster, deputy medical examiner of Oakland, was also notified. The body was removed to the Durst Funeral Home in Frostburg. He was born in Garrett Co., a son of James H. and Mary Michael Green. Survivors other than his parents include his widow, Mildred (Wilhelm) Green; five daughters, Juanita, Jude, Deborah, Beverly and Cathy Green; a son Kenneth Green, all at home; two brothers, Joshua and Jackson Green, both of RD 1, Lonaconing. Four sisters, Mildred Lawson, in Germany with her husband; Mrs. Leola Shrum and Mrs. Mary Kirkendall, both of Baltimore; and Mrs. Rachella Cutter, RD 1, Lonaconing. Angus A. McKenzie, 62, died Wednesday at his home in Salisbury; he was born in Garrett county, Md., May 20, 1888, a son of Sabius and Anna Chaney McKenzie. His mother survives and lives in Oakland, Md. Surviving also are his wife, Caroline Merbaugh McKenzie, and the following children: Henry and Wilbur McKenzie and Mrs. Lucille Werner, all of Salisbury; Ernest McKenzie, Meyersdale; and Mrs. Leona Oester, Salisbury RFD 1. Also, two brothers and two sisters, James and Raymond McKenzie of Avilton, Md., Mrs. Dora Durst, New Germany, Md., and Mrs. Mary Cochrane, Salisbury. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, West Salisbury, where requiem mass will be recited by Father Joseph O'Toole Saturday at 10 a.m. Burial in the Catholic cemetery at Avilton, Md. SALISBURY, Pa. - Caroline C. “Carrie” McKenzie, 96, of Gay Street, Salisbury, died Sunday, Nov. 11, 1990, at Meyersdale Community Hospital. Born Feb. 25, 1894, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Annie (Bowers) Merrbach. She was preceded in death by her husband, Angus McKenzie, June 14, 1950. Mrs. McKenzie was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. Surviving are one son, Wilbur McKenzie, Salisbury; two daughters, Leona Oester, Grantsville; and Lucille Werner, Salisbury; one brother, Theodore Merrbach, Grantsville; two sisters, Lydia Butler, Salisbury; and Amelia Valentine, Stoystown; 30 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Home in Salisbury. Services will be held there Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. David E. Fetter. Interment will be in St. Ann’s Cemetery, Avilton, Md. AVILTON - Leonard Joseph Wilhelm Sr., 100, of Avilton, went to be with the Lord, Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002, at his residence. He was born March 8, 1902, in Garrett County, a son of the late John Olin and Ada (Garlitz) Wilhelm. He resided less than a mile from where he grew up. His great-grandfather was one of the first county commissioners in the area. Mr. Wilhelm began working at an early age. At age 9, he conceived of the idea for a place where his family could gather to enjoy each other's company. This place became known as Wilhelm Flat. Throughout the Wilhelm family history, this site has seen its share of parties, weddings, and other holiday family gatherings. He was a middle child in a family of 11 children, and is survived by only one sibling, a younger brother, Asa Wilhelm, also of Avilton. As a boy, Mr. Wilhelm worked on the farm and in saw mills, hauled logs to Uniontown, Pa., in a Ford truck and handled horses with a sleigh. He married his wife, the former Mary E. J. Crowe on Valentines Day, Feb. 14, 1927, three years after they began dating. Mrs. Wilhelm preceded him in death on July 15, 1980. Together they had 19 children. Three sons, and one daughter, Dale Frederick, Okee, and Harry Wilhelm, and Hazel Layman also preceded him in death. Surviving are seven sons, Leonard, Jr., Ray and Ronald, all of Avilton, Olin of Wickliffe, Ohio, Gilbert, Sr., Lonaconing, Dallas, Barton, and Robert, Uniontown, Pa.; eight daughters, Twila Mae Fike, Mildred Husselbaugh, and Susie Kamp, all of Avilton, Jean Miller, North Jackson, Ohio, Helen Michael, Westernport, Lois Rowe, Connie Burdock, and Sheila Baker, all of Frostburg; 65 grandchildren; 108 great-grandchildren; and 37 great great grandchildren. The Wilhelm family's home was always open to friends and family. Mr. Wilhelm worked hard all his life, but always made a point to set aside holidays for his family. And the only work done on Sundays consisted of essential farm tasks. He helped to keep his large family close by always encouraging his children to help out around the house and giving them the best possible environment in which to grow up. He always provided his family with plenty of food, giving them fresh vegetables, beef, and one of his favorites, pork. Mr. Wilhelm had always enjoyed life and accepted its ups and downs. He realized that his health had been very good, since he only began taking medications two years ago. He worked in his garden well into his late 90s. A member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church, Leonard acknowledged Jesus' help in his life and firmly believed that the key to a good, long life is always helping people. The Wilhelm family will receive friends at the Wilhelm Recreational Area (The Flat), on the Avilton-Lonaconing Road, on Saturday from 2 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted there on Sunday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Daniel Agnew and the Rev. Warren Friend officiating. Interment will be in Blocher Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Leonard Joey Wilhelm III, Brian Wilhelm, Matthew Wilhelm, Timmy Wilhelm II, Terrell Burdock, and Ronnie Wilhelm.
