OLDTOWN — Robert E. “Rabbit” Keister, 77, of Oldtown, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2011, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, W.Va. He is now with his beloved wife of 56 years, Pauline, who passed away July 9, 2011. Bob was born Jan. 29, 1934, in Midlothian, to the late Harry E. and Elizabeth Hamilton Keister. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Morgan and Doris Morgan, and two brothers-in-law, Gerald Morgan and James Vought. Mr. Keister is survived by his adoring family, three daughters, Pam Cambell and husband Tim, of Oldtown, Penny Lavin and husband Harold, of Oldtown, and Paula Sue Booth and husband Rob, of Oldtown; and three sons, Greg Keister and wife Nancy, of Potomac Park, Scott Keister and wife Kimila, of Finzel, and Travis Keister and wife Jen, of Zilhman. Also surviving are sisters Elaine Resh and husband Bob, of Warren, Ohio and Janice Vought, of Midlothian; brothers, Harry Keister and wife Elaine, of Romney, W.Va., Jim Keister and wife Gloria, of Carlos, Rae Keister and wife Ora, of Frostburg, and Neil Keister and wife Nancy, of Midlothian. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Bob was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having been stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas and Lakenheath Air Force Base in England. He was formerly employed by Berkowitz in Frostburg, Celanese Corporation, Pittsburgh Plate Glass, Kelly Springfield Tire Company, and Allegany Ballistics Laboratories. While stationed in England, Bob was a member of the Lakenheath Ramblers baseball team. He earned a reputation as a stellar left-handed pitcher. He was a member of several Penn Mar teams, and also played in the Twilight League. He coached each of his sons at Little League, passing on his passion and skill for the game. Bob was a consummate sportsman and loved to hunt. He taught each of his sons and grandsons the love and skill of hunting and reveled in ball games in the backyard with them. Bob was a perfect father, a very happy husband and a gentleman. He was a role model for his children and grandchildren and all the other “extra” children that seemed to find their way to Bob and Pauline’s house. His garden was always well-tended and fruitful, and his expansive lawn beautiful and green, the envy of many passers-by. His knowledge of World War II was astounding, and he was fascinated by the night sky and the space program. He kept a watchful eye on the weather, and never missed a chance to enjoy a good thunderstorm from the back porch. Bob will always be remembered for his gentle smile and his good nature. He measured his words carefully, and when he spoke, it was meaningful and worthwhile. He will be sadly missed, and memories of happy days with him cherished. At his request, Bob was cremated. A memorial service will be conducted by nephew Rev. Robbie Culler on Aug. 28, 2011, at 1 p.m. in Durst Funeral Home on 57 Frost Ave. in Frostburg. Honorary pallbearers will be sons, Greg Keister, Scott Keister and Travis Keister. Interment will be in the Emmanuel United Methodist Church Cemetery in Finzel. LATROBE, Pa. — Helen “Pauline” Eisler Keister, 75, of Oldtown, passed from this life on Saturday, July 9, 2011, in Select Specialty Hospital in Latrobe, Pa. Pauline was born on May 7, 1936, in Finzel, to Helen A. Brode and the late Earl Adam Eisler. Pauline was a 1954 graduate of Beall High School; was formerly employed by Berkowitz in Frostburg, and the old Sacred Heart Hospital on Decatur Street in Cumberland. Pauline was a marvelous homemaker who loved to cook and can. She enjoyed having a house full of children. She was a loving, wonderful wife, the world’s best mother and a faithful friend. Her barbecued chicken was without compare. Bob and Pauline’s home was a gathering place for family, friends and anyone who happened by. She loved everyone unconditionally and generously gave of herself to everyone. Being with Pauline meant being loved, comforted and fed. Her beautiful smile and gentle laugh made many a sad heart glad. Crocheting and crossword puzzles were two of her favorite activities. She made beautiful crocheted snowflakes that to this day still decorate many Christmas trees. Pauline will be sadly missed and remembered lovingly by her community and many friends. Mrs. Keister leaves behind her beloved husband of 56 years, Robert E. Keister; her mother, Helen A. She also leaves to miss her fifteen grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews that she loved with all her heart. Friends and family will be received at Durst Funeral Home P.A., 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Tuesday, July 12, 2011, from 4 to 8 pm. Funeral services will be conducted the funeral home on Wednesday, July 13, 2011, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Robert Culler officiating. Friends and family are being received one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Emmanuel Methodist Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Adam Campbell, Davey Blahut, Bobby Booth, Darrell Lavin, Kollin Keister, and nephew Cooper Corley. FINZEL - Earl Adam 'Slim' Eisler, 86, of 77 Sampson Rock Road, Frostburg, went home with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, April 18, 2004. He died at home surrounded by people who loved him. Born in Finzel, on March 23, 1918, he was the youngest child of the late John Adam and Hylie (Winebrenner) Clark Eisler. He was also preceded in death by seven sisters; 10 brothers; and one granddaughter. He got his first job at the age of nine hauling rocks to clear the way for the building of the Finzel Road. When he got older, he worked in the coal mines and later for his sister Elsie Lotz at Frostburg Meats. For years he sold Rawleigh Products door-to-door. He eventually became an employee of the Celanese Amcelle Plant and was retired from there. Dad, Pappap, Pappy enjoyed fishing, hunting, watching baseball games, and working crypto quotes, but his passion was bluegrass music. At the age of eight he began teaching himself how to play various instruments including the piano, harmonica, guitar, banjo, and mandolin but he became 'master of the fiddle.' He played entirely by ear and it was said by more than one person that no one could play the 'Orange Blossom Special' like he did. He won several fiddling contests and even judged a few. Being 6'3" and slender earned him the knick name 'Mountain City Slim' and over the years he played in several bands including The Mountain City Ramblers, Dusty Shaver's Gospel Singers and Appalachian Bluegrass to name a few. In the early years he played for round and square dances all around the area and could be heard on live radio broadcasts. In the later years he entertained children at the Outdoor School in Pleasant Valley and played at several nursing homes and churches, he also performed for the Governor at Rocky Gap State Park. He wrote, sang, and played the fiddle on an original song called 'Garrett County Home' in tribute to the place where he lived his entire life. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was quite witty. He also created and performed a comedy routine in which he portrayed a character he called 'Zookie'. His talents were limitless. He cut down the trees and built his own home. He loved to work with his hands and he called it 'tinkering around'. He was extremely creative and truly could make something out of nothing. He worked on everything from broken handles to lawn mowers and his skills at mending were summed up by his grandchildren, when as one stood crying over a broken toy, her brother comforted her by saying, 'Don't cry, Pappap can fix anything.' And it was a rare occurrence when he couldn't. He is survived by three loving daughters, Helen Pauline 'Pommy' Keister and husband Bob, Oldtown, E. Loretta 'Letty' Minnick and husband Bob, Finzel, and Eileen Frances 'Leenie' Ewing and husband Kenny with whom he resided; a special granddaughter, Missy Ramhoff, whom he helped to raise; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; faithful companion and wonderful friend 'Alda' with whom he shared many memories; several nieces and nephews; and his former wife Helen (Minnick) Brode and her son, a special friend Raymond 'Butch' Brode. Earl's friends number too many to count. They visited and called to inquire about him, sent cards, and kept him in their prayers. He was also blessed to receive care and comfort from the Garrett Co. Home Health Care Team and Hospice of Garrett Co. They became quite a part of his life and he looked forward to their visits. Friends and family will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, P.A., 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at the Emmanuel United Methodist Church, Pocahontas Road, of which he was a member, on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dan Agnew officiating. His body will be taken to the church one hour prior to the services. Interment will be in the Emmanuel Methodist Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Greg Keister, Scott Keister, Travis Keister, David Blahut, Adam Campbell, and special friend Butch Brode. What wonderful memories he has left with us. He was the most precious man God ever made, and even though he is playing his fiddle in heaven now, he will be sadly, sadly missed by all who knew him. FROSTBURG — Helen Agnes “Vira” Minnick Eisler Brode, 97, of Frostburg, left peacefully for her eternal home on Wednesday, March 16, 2016, in her home surrounded by her adoring family. Helen, affectionately called “Vira” by her family, was born July 19, 1918, to the late Joseph Bernard Minnick and Frances Loretta McKenzie Minnick. Helen was the last surviving member of her family, having been preceded in death by her first husband, Earl Adam Eisler; her second husband, Raymond Alvin Brode; seven brothers; six sisters; one daughter, Pauline “Pommy” Keister and husband, Bob; one step-son, William Brode; two grand-daughters; and two great-grandchildren. Helen was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, in Frostburg, and attended St. Michael’s School. She was a devout Catholic throughout her entire life, reciting the Rosary every day. Helen was known for her vivacity and zest for life. She was the prom date of “Grandpa Jones,” of Hee-Haw fame. Dancing was one of her very favorite activities, and she graced many a dance floor with her signature red hair, graceful body and beautiful face. Mel Tillis, having met Helen prior to a performance, remarked during the show on the “beautiful redhead” he met earlier. Country music was her favorite. Both of her husbands were musicians, and she happily attended every event that she could. Helen always had a servant’s heart, and even in her youth was forever helping those who were needy. She gently cared for many ill friends and relatives. Her home was always inviting and there was plenty of good food for anyone fortunate enough to be there. She was a handy carpenter, and could fix and build most anything. She loved to crochet and sew and could grow anything out of seemingly nothing, making gardens that were always beautiful and plentiful. Helen’s contagious energy was inspiring. She had been employed at the Michael Berkowitz sewing factory, Gehauf’s Motel, and retired from Frostburg State University housekeeping. Helen leaves behind her daughters, Loretta “Lettie” Minnick and Bob Minnick, Eileen “Leenie” Ewing and husband, Kenny; son, Raymond A. “Butch” Brode Jr. and Debbie Bittner; two step-sons, Wayne Brode and Jack Brode, and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She will be sadly missed by her loved ones, her many friends and her precious little dog, “She-She.” The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Gary Wagoner and staff as well as Homecare and Hospice of Western Maryland Health Systems. FROSTBURG - Mrs. Hylie Eisler, 88, died yesterday at Miners Hospital where she was a patient two days. Born in Garrett County, she was a daughter of the late Isaac and Margaret (Crowe) Winebrenner. Her husband, Adam Eisler, preceded her in death. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Berndetta Klink and Mrs. John Lotz, both of here; Mrs. Clifton Caton, Westernport, and Mrs. Anna Crowe, Baltimore; three sons, Frank Hawarth Clark (sic: should be Clark Howarth), Jenners, Pa.; Samuel and Earl Eisler, both of here; 39 grandchildren; 90 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren. The body is at the Durst Funeral Home where friends will be received today from 7 to 9 p. m. and tomorrow from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p. m. Born in Garrett County, a daughter of the late Jacob and Fannie (Christner) McKenzie, she was the last surviving member of that family. Mrs. Minnick was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church. Surviving are three sons, Marion, Allen and Lawrence Minnick, all of Frostburg; five daughters, Mrs. James Hickman, Akron; Mrs. Harry Hotchkiss, Ridgeley; Mrs. Raymond Brode and Mrs. Thomas Scarpelli, both of Eckhart, and Mrs. Raymond Wempe, Cumberland, 21 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
