    Notes:

FROSTBURG — Bernice Evelyn (Gibson) Lucas, 96, of Frostburg, went home to be with her loving Lord and Savior on Thursday, June 14, 2012. Born Dec. 11, 1915 in Frostburg, she was the youngest daughter of the late Laura Robeson. During the last moments of her life she was surrounded by loved ones as she slowly slipped away into the morning with peace and grace at Frostburg Village. Bernice was the youngest of three sisters (Della Robeson and Beulah Gibson preceded her in death) and was the last remaining member of her immediate family. She is now reunited with her late husband in marriage of 68 years, George L. Lucas, who passed away on Aug. 9, 2002. They were the parents of 13 children. Bernice is also preceded in death by seven of them, William Lucas, George Lucas, Eugene Lucas, Gary E. Lucas, Darlene A. (Lucas) Porter, Donna J. Lucas, and Sharon J. (Lucas) Miller. She is survived by four sons, Thomas Lucas (Carol), Grahamtown, Robert Lucas (Connie) of Port Matida, Pa., Lt. Col. Ronald Lucas of Aberdeen, Don Lucas, of Bloomington, formerly of Washington D.C.; two daughters, Glenda McKenzie (Delbert) of Eckhart, Carole Harper, Cumberland; a son-in-law, Michael Miller, Grahamtown; and a daughter-in-law, Bonita Lucas, Frostburg. After the death of her daughter, Darlene, Bernice also became the guardian of her four children, Carol Green, Kenny Porter, Steve Porter and Jeff Porter, all of Frostburg. Bernice is also blessed with having 19 loving grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Bernice dedicated her life to her family, faith, friends and church which truly defined her. She was a loving mother, wife, mentor, and inspiration to all who knew her. Bernice was a very special person with a heart made of gold. She leaves her family with many memories to cherish and pass on to others. Every day she spent on this earth she knew was a gift from God and she willingly passed that on to all whom she touched. Everything good that is in her children came wholly or in part from this Angel. She taught them to love, to give, and the value of hard work and dedication to their passions in life. She taught that there is value in every human life, regardless of how meek or downtrodden. She taught us to give, to be a fountain and not a drain, and for one cannot out give God. Finally, the lesson of the value of the fight, and to her very last day she continued that lesson. She parted this earth with such dignity. She often said that “When I leave this world, I don’t want to owe anyone and I don’t want anyone mad at me.” Though Bernice has gone home now, and as we remember her and mourn the hole in our hearts that is now with those that knew and loved her, take comfort in Psalms: “You will find refuge under God’s wings...you need not fear the terror by night...God’s angels will guard you wherever you go and carry you in their hands.” In 2006, Bernice was chosen for the Allegany Magazine as one of the 20 most fascinating people in Allegany County. She was nominated by the late Robert S. Watson, who wrote of her extraordinary acts of love and kindness throughout her life. Beneath her mortal cover, she was a remarkable good kind soul. Finally he wrote about how in her heart was excessive love, unyielding faith and the courage of a thousand armies. In her mind was the everlasting thought, “How an I give?” She sought always to be a friend, a helping hand, a uniter, never to be a burden or a divider. Yes, she was an extraordinary person. She was a member of Frostburg United Methodist Church. The family would like to extend a very heartfelt “Thank you!” to all the nurses, aides, staff, employees, and residents at the Frostburg Village Nursing Facility who truly provided, “Tender Loving Care,” for our mother during her 18 month stay there. (Her "angels" as she referred to all of them) The kindness, support, friendship, and love extended to our mother and our family during her time there has far exceeded one's expectations. While this past week has been difficult for the family, your passionate, sincere genuine care has really touched our hearts, we are sincerely appreciative!!! You have all become such a special part of our mother's life, and ours as well...blended as our family now. While our mother is no longer there physically, know that spiritually she is. She is now watching over all of you as your “Angel.” Bernice knew that you are all unsung heroes. The family wants you to know that your tireless and demanding job did not go unnoticed. Again, “Thank you with love,” from our home to your home. Friends will be received at the Sowers Funeral Home on Saturday, June 16, 2012, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Sunday, June 17, 2012, at 1 p.m. with Pastor Jen D. Webber officiating. Friends may be received an hour before the service. Interment will be in Frostburg Memorial Park.
