Owen Alvin Layman, 84, of Cumberland, died on Sunday, March 6, 2005, at the WMHS Sacred Heart Campus Hospital. Born Dec. 14, 1920, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Alvin Layman and Edith (Hager) Layman. Mr. Layman was also preceded in death by two brothers, Walter and Lewis Layman, and a sister, Phyllis Hager. Mr. Layman was a United States Army veteran during World War II. He was retired from the City of Cumberland Street Department and was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 245 and worked as a bartender there. A member of the Centre Street United Methodist Church, he became very active in his 70s in several church plays and served as an usher. He also participated in the annual Community Cross Walks held on Good Friday and carried the cross on a couple of occasions. Mr. Layman is survived by his wife, Rosemarie (Hager) Layman; his daughter, Reverend Bernadette Ross and husband Richard, Cumberland; a brother, Gary Layman and wife Jeannette, Cumberland; his grandchildren, Tana Ross Wolfe and husband David, Cumberland, and Wendy L. Miller and husband Craig, LaVale; and his great grandchildren, Olivia Wolfe, Nicholas Miller, and Jacob Miller. Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Tuesday, March 8, 2005, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted at the Centre Street United Methodist Church on Wednesday, March 9, 2005, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Lloyd McCanna officiating. Mr. Layman's family will receive friends at the church from 1 to 1:45 p.m. Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard. Interment will be at Rest Lawn Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Dave Wolfe, Craig Miller, Scott Summers, Mike Thomas, Chris Zollner, and Steve Layman. Honorary pallbearer will be James Kaiser. The family requests that memorials be made in Mr. Layman's name to the Centre Street United Methodist Church, 217 Centre St., Cumberland, MD 21502 or the LaVale United Methodist Church, 565 National Highway, LaVale, MD 21502. Alvin John Lehman, 61, Williams Road, died yesterday in Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient four weeks. A native of Carlos, he was a son of the late Owen A. and Ellen (Bone) Lehman. Mr. Lehman was a retired machinist for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company and was a member of Local 212, International Association of Machinists; Aerie 245. FO Eagles and the Methodist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Delbert Hager, city; four sons, Owen A. and James G. Lehman, both of this city, and Louis J. and Walter T. Lehman, both of Chicago; two sisters, Mrs. Albert Schafer and Mrs. Martha Chisholm, both of Akron; eight grandchildren and a great-grandchild. The body is at the Silcox Funeral Residence where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p. m. and 7 to 9 p. m. Services will be conducted at the funeral residence Friday, 2 p. m., by Rev. William Anderson, pastor of Eckhart Methodist Church. Interment will be in Hillcrest Burial Park. Members of Aerie 245. FO Eagles, will conduct a service at the funeral home tomorrow at 8 p. m. Owen Alvin Layman, 81, of 815 Shawnee avenue, a native of Frostburg, died at 5 p.m. yesterday in Memorial Hospital. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Ellen (Bone) Layman, and one son, Alvin, of this city, and two daughters, Mrs. Gladys Avery, Akron, Ohio, and Mrs. Leonard Thuss, this city. He also leaves his mother, Mrs. Annie Louise Layman, Frostburg, and the following brothers and sisters; Ernest, Robert, George Layman, Frostburg; Benjamin Layman, Syracuse. N.Y.; Lawrence, Washington, D.C.; Mrs. James Burns, Mrs. Samuel Neat, Mrs. Joseph Koelker, of Cumberland; Mrs. Russel Diehl, Mrs. Fuller Davis of Frostburg, and Mrs. Charles Wolfe, of Hagerstown, Md. He was a member of Hope Council 30, Jr. O.U.A.M. of Midland and Local 577, Boilermakers and Iron Ship Builders of America. The funeral will be held Friday at 2:30 p.m. from the home. The Rev. Carlos, MD., July 10 - George Layman, 64 years old, a well known citizen of Carlos, died at 5 o'clock this morning. He was employed by the Barton and Georges Creek Coal Company as carpenter for many years. He formerly lived in Frostburg. He was born in Garrett county, and has wide family connection in Maryland, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias and the Junior Order United Mechanics. Besides his wife the following children survive: William, Albie[sic], Lawrence and Misses Ada and Ruth Layman, at home; Owen Layman, of Carlos; Mrs. Charles Wolfe, Mrs. Russell Diehl, Robert Layman, George Layman, living in Cumberland; Geo. Layman and Ernest Layman, of Borden Shaft, and Miss Nellie and Annie Layman, of Cumberland. FROSTBURG - A 94-year-old native of Porter Settlement, near Eckhart, and one of the Frostburg area's oldest citizens, Mrs. Annie Louise Layman will be guest of honor at a family party and reunion Wednesday, July 7, at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Thelma Wilson, wife of Robert Wilson, Baltimore Pike. Mrs. Layman, daughter of the late Nelson Crowe and Mary Ann (Winebrenner) Crowe, Garrett county, is the widow of George Louis Layman, a farmer and carpenter who died at the family home in Carlos in 1913. Mr. and Mrs. Layman were married November 7, 1873, at the home of the bride, then residing with her parents on the Braddock Farm in Garrett county, near here. The ceremony was performed by the late Rev. Joseph Mason, a circuit riding minister of the Methodist Church. After their marriage, the young couple started farming on the Graham farm, in Grahamtown, residing in one of the small houses near Wrights Crossing and later in the residence now occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Zack Arnold. During their married life, they resided in various localities in the Georges Creek region, Including the stone house on the Koontz farm, near Midland, Shaft and Carlos, moving to the latter place in 1894 and remaining there until after the death of Mr. Layman. Since that time, Mrs. Layman has been making her home with her children, residing at present with her daughter, Mrs. Ruth Davis, 15 Welsh Street, wife of Fuller Davis, governor of Frostburg Lodge, No 348, Loyal Order of Moose. Mr. and Mrs. Layman are the parents of 16 children, nine living and seven dead. The surviving children are Robert Layman, Detroit; Benjamin Layman, Syracuse, N. Y.; George Layman, Shaft; Mrs. Nellie Byrnes, Mrs. Annie Neat and Mrs. Ada Koelker, Cumberland; Mrs. Oma Wolfe, Hagerstown; Mrs. Ruth Davis, Frostburg, and Lawrence Layman, Alexandria, Va. The deceased children are Mrs. Elsie Diehl, wife of Russell Diehl, manager of the Frostburg office of the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company, who died March 31, 1947, and Ernest Layman, president of the Shaft Water Company, who died March 25, 1948; Grace, John, Algie, William and Owen Layman. Mrs. Annie Louise Layman, 94, a native of Eckhart, near Frostburg, died Sunday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Fuller Davis, Frostburg, with whom she made her home. She was the daughter of the late Nelson Crowe and Mary Ann Winebrenner Crowe. Surviving are children, Mrs. Charles J. Wolfe, The Terrace, Hagerstown; Mrs. Nellie Byrnes, Mrs. Annie Neat, Mrs. Ada Koelker, Curmberland; Mrs. Davis, Frostburg; Robert Layman, Detroit; Benjamin Layman, Shaft, and Lawrence Layman, Alexandria, Va.; 47 grandchildren; 73 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren; also three sisters, Mrs. Nan Weimer, Kingfisher, Okla.; Mrs. Mollie Hawkins, Akron, Ohio; and Mrs. Rella DeVore, Eckhart. She was one of the oldest residents of the Frostburg area, and was married November 7, 1873, at the home of her parents on the Braddock Farm, in Garrett county, near here. The ceremony was performed by the late Joseph Mason, a circuit riding minister of the Methodist church. Mrs. Layman was a member of Shaft Methodist Church. Services will be held Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. in the Methodist Church, Borden Shaft. Rev. Raymond Crowe, pastor, will officiate and interment will be in Allegany Cemetery. FROSTBURG - Mrs. Annie Louise Layman, 94, who died Sunday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Fuller Davis, 15 Welsh Street, was buried Wednesday in Allegany Cemetery. Services at Shaft Methodist Church were in charge of Rev. Raymond M. Crowe, pastor of Midland Methodist Church. Pallbearers, all grandchildren, were James and George Layman, Robert and Harvey Diehl, Carl Long and Junior Layman. Flower bearers include George Hawkins, George Tennant, George Thorp, Anderson Green, James Quinn and Chris Walbert. Cumberland Evening Times, December 3, 1948
