AVILTON — Roy Davis Broadwater, 88, of Avilton, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, at his home, with his loving family at his side. Born Aug. 23, 1924, in Avilton, he was the son of the late Albert James “Bert” and Martha (Platter) Broadwater. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Bonnie; his son-in-law, Eugene Miller; six brothers, Ray, Lee, Ellis, Marshall, Alvin and Russell Broadwater and three sisters, Eva Lewis, Laura Broadwater and Arvella Wilson. Roy was a member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church and the Methodist Men’s Group. He was a member of Woodmen of World, Lodge 41, Grantsville; the Wednesday Morning Bowling League and the Avilton Community Association. He was a U. S. Army veteran serving during the Korean War. He had been employed as a custodian at Route 40 Elementary School for over 30 years and a school bus driver by the Garrett County Board of Education. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Diona Jean (Crowe) Broadwater; four sons, Monty Broadwater and wife, Patty and Lowell Broadwater and wife, Tracey, all of Avilton, Ricky Broadwater and wife, Sue, Meyersdale, Pa., Malcolm Broadwater, at home; five daughters, Barbara Miller and special friend, Barry Arvin and Gladys Galica and husband, Tim, all of Avilton, Denise McKinney and husband, David, Pocahontas, Pa., Wendy Miner and husband, Ronnie, Bittinger, Jody McClintock and husband, Steve, Grantsville; one brother, Charles Broadwater, Reedsville, W.Va.; 24 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson. Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 179 Miller St., Grantsville, on Tuesday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be conducted on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Mount Zion United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dan Agnew officiating. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the services. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Greg Miller, Joe Galica, Ryan Broadwater, Jeremy Broadwater, Travis Beitzel and Seth Broadwater. Honorary pallbearers will be Eric Miller, Douglas Galica, Gabe Broadwater, Ronnie Miner Jr., and Justin Broadwater. Military graveside honors will be accorded at graveside. Expressions of sympathy may be directed to Mount Zion UMC Building Fund, Hospice of Garrett County or Avilton Community Association. FROSTBURG — Samuel Webster Crowe, 70, owner of Hilton Florist, died yesterday at Sacred Heart Hospital where he had been a patient two weeks. He had been in ill health one year. He resided at Avilton. A native of New Germany, he was a son of the late Henry S. and Louvina (Duckworth) Crowe. Mr. Crowe was a retired grader operator for the Garrett County Roads Department. Surviving are his widow, Melva (Broadwater) Crowe; three sons, Milton L. Crowe, Cumberland; Hubert J. Crowe, at home, and Owen L. Crowe, Frostburg; three daughters, Mrs. Roy D. Broadwater and Mrs. Harold B. Morris, both of Avilton, and Mrs. Forrest Broadwater, Salisbury, Pa.; three brothers, Lee, Edgar and Harvey Crowe, all of Avilton; two sisters, Mrs. Leonard Wilhelm, Avilton; and Mrs. Earl Garlitz, Star Route, Frostburg, and 16 grandchildren. The body is at the Hafer Frost Mansion Funeral Home where friends will be received today from 7 to 9 p. m. and tomorrow from 2 to 4 p. m. and 7 to 9 p. m. Services will be conducted there Wednesday at 2 p. m. by Rev. Robert Moxley, pastor of Zion United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Trinity Methodist Cemetery, New Germany. FR0STBURG — Mrs. Melva L. Crowe, 61, of 11 West Main Street, owner and operator of Hilton Florist, died yesterday at Frostburg Community Hospital, following a brief illness. She had been admitted to the hospital Wednesday. Born in New Germany, she was a daughter of the late Charles F. and Stella F. Hanlon Broadwater, and was the widow of Samuel W. Crowe, who died in 1969. She was a member of Frostburg American Legion Auxiliary, Women of the Moose, Ladies Auxiliary to Fraternal Order of Eagles and Woodmen of the World. Surviving are two sons, Milton L. Crowe, Bowman's Addition, Cumberland; Owen L. Crowe, LaVale; three daughters. Mrs. Roy D. Broadwater, Mrs. Harold B. Morris, LaVale; Mrs. Forrest Broadwater, Salisbury, Pa.; a brother, Lee Broadwater, Jennings; two sisters, Mrs. James Alvero and Miss Myrtle Broadwater, Keyser; 19 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The body is at the Hafer Frost Mansion Funeral Home, where friends will be received today from 2 until 4 and 7 until 9 p.m. A service will be conducted there tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Sadie E. Grantsville, Oct. 12 - Services were held this afternoon in New Germany Methodist church for Henry Stewart Crowe, 85, who died Tuesday evening at his home in Avilton after a long illness. The Rev. Charles Sisk officiated. Mr. Crowe was the last member of a family of nine children of Henry and Hariette (Durst) Crowe, early settlers in New Germany. He is survived by his widow, three daughters, Mrs. Mary Wilhelm and Mrs. Pearl Wilhelm, Avilton; and Mrs. Hazel Garlitz, Cumberland; and four sons, Harvey, who just returned from Germany; Samuel, Lee and Edgar, at home. Mrs. Louvina (Duckworth) Crowe, aged 69 years, widow of the late Steward Crowe, died at her home at Avilton, Md., early Monday morning. She was the daughter of the late Israel and Mary (Wiland) Duckworth, and was born at New Germany, Md. Surviving are the following children: Samuel, Lee, Edgar and Harvey Crowe, Mrs. Leonard Wilhelm, and Mrs. Earl Garlitz, all of Avilton; Mrs. Julius Wilhelm, Long Stretch; also 24 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. William Logston, and one brother, Henry Duckworth of Lonaconing. The body was at the home of Mrs. Julius Wilhelm, Long Stretch, till the funeral services at the New Germany Methodist Church, Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 3, at 2 o'clock. Rev. D. J. Combs, pastor, officiated. Interment in the church cemetery. Meyersdale Republican, December 4, 1947
