Leland R. Swauger, 85, of 26 Parkside Boulevard, LaVale, Md., died Monday, Jan. 5, 1987, in Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, Md. Born in New Germany Aug. 6, 1901, he was the son of the late Charles T. and Harriet Alice (Green) Swauger. He was preceded in death by two wives, Blanche D. (Layman) Swauger in 1945, and Ethel (Simpson) Swauger in 1965. He retired in 1965 from the Kelly-Springfield Tire Company as a carpenter after 24 years of service. He was a member of LaVale United Methodist Church, LaVale Volunteer Fire Company, Woodmen of the World Camp 41, Grantsville, and LOO Moose Lodge 348, Frostburg. He was a former Grantsville councilman and was past director of the Kelco Credit Union. Surviving are his widow, Ruby (Dunn) Swauger; four sons, Walter A. Swauger, Grantsville, Md.; Leland "Lee" R. Swauger Jr., Taylor, Mich.; James E. Swauger, LaVale, Md.; and C. Thomas Swauger, Bowie, Md.; one stepson, Robert Jones, Ranson, W.Va.; one daughter, Mrs. Margie Mangus, Fayetteville, N.C.; one step-daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Bruck, Cumberland, Md.; 23 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Friends were received in the Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary where services were conducted Thursday at 1:30 p.m. by Dr. Howard Newman. Interment, Grantsville Cemetery. Mrs. Blanche Delena Layman Swauger, wife of Leland Swauger, died at her home early Sunday morning, Sept. 2, after an illness of more than a year. She had been a patient in the Miners' Hospital, Frostburg for several weeks prior to her death. Mrs. Swauger, daughter of the late Richard and Mrs. Anna H. (Miller) Layman, Frostburg, was born Oct. 21, 1905, at Avilton. She is survived by her husband and the following named children: Robert Swauger, F. 2/c, Bainbridge, Md.; Walter Leland, Jr., James, Charles, Thomas and Marjorie Juanita; her mother, Mrs. Anna H. Layman; one sister, Mrs. William Miller and a brother, Lee Layman, Grantsville. She was married to Mr. Swauger, Aug. 20, 1926, and resided in New Germany until February last when they moved to Grantsville, Md. Mrs. Swauger was a member of the New Germany Methodist Church. Funeral services were held in the Grantsville Methodist Church, Tuesday afternoon, and were largely attended. Rev. R. G. Henson, assisted by Rev. Ira S. Monn of the Salisbury Reformed Church, officiated. Rev. Sylvestus Henson sang "The Unclouded Day", and "God Understands," accompanied by Mrs. S. Henson. The pallbearers were Sylvan, Dallas, and Blaine Durst, Oberlin Stevens, Herbert and William Layman. Interment in the Grantsville Cemetery. Relatives who attended the funeral were Mrs. Harriet Alice Swauger, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Alexander, La Vale; Mrs. Ada Brenneman, Cumberland; Mrs. Lottie Shaw, Greensburg, Pa., Stanley Swauger, Baltimore; Mr. and Mrs. Beryl Watkins, Akron, O., Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Grantsville, Md., Oct. 22 - Richard Thomas Layman, 66, died Monday night, after a lingering illness. A native of Garrett county, he lived in the Mount Zion section till about four years ago when he sold his farm and moved to Allegany county. After a brief residence there, he moved to Grantsville. Surviving are his wife, Anna Odessa Miller Layman, and the following children: Leander Layman and Mrs. William Miller, Grantsville; and Mrs. Leland Swauger, New Germany, and fifteen grandchildren. He was a brother of Lewis Layman, Avilton; Mark Layman, Jennings; Albert Layman, Baltimore; Mrs. Charles Chaney, Avilton, and Lulu Mulligan. Mr. Layman was a member of the Pentacostal Church, Cumberland, for several years. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday by Rev. Virgil R. Gillum. Interment will be at Mount Zion. Grantsville, Md., March 16 - Sarah M. Miller, a native of New Germany and a pioneer resident of Garrett county, died early today at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Henry F. Durst, this place, after a lingering illness. Her funeral will be held Thursday at 2:30 p. m. from the Methodist Episcopal Church, New Germany, of which she was a lifelong member. She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Crowe. Surviving are three sons, Howard M. Crowe, McHenry, Md.; George G. Crowe, LaVale, Md., and Harry O. Crowe, Grantsville, and six daughters, Mrs. Charles A. Baum, Berlin, Pa.; Mrs. J. L. Fresh, Frostburg; Mrs. Richard Layman, Avilton; Mrs. Cora Davies, Akron, O.; Mrs. Allen Leidinger, Cleveland, Ohio, and Mrs. Durst. She was a sister of Robert and Stewart Crowe, Avilton, and Webster Crowe, New Germany. She leaves also 37 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren. Grantsville, Md., March 17 — Funeral services for Mrs. Sarah M. Miller, who died yesterday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Henry Durst, this place, will be held tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. from the Methodist Episcopal Church, New Germany.
