    Donald Edouard Keene, 92, of Mount Savage, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2017, at WMHS Frostburg Nursing and Rehabilitation. Born on March 20, 1925, at Allegany Hospital in Cumberland. Mr. Keene was the son of the late Frank Reed Keene and Edna Regina Murphy of Frostburg. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife of 70 years, Marianna Trimble Keene; his only sibling, younger brother, Gerald Alan Keene; and his son-in-law, Richard Sauer. Donald was a United States Naval veteran who served in the Pacific in World War II. He attended Frostburg Normal Grade School, Beall Junior School, Beall High School (graduating in 1943), and the University of Maryland at College Park (finishing in 1951). Donald met Marianna Trimble Keene at age 15 at Beall High School and they married in 1947. Beginning in the early 1940's when he was first dating Marianna, Donald started helping his future wife's family to take care of their farm, which began a lifetime of preserving, restoring, and maintaining this historic property, now known as the Evergreen Heritage Center in Mount Savage. Donald also worked for various corporations as an electrical engineer. In addition, Donald conducted research and authored multiple books on family genealogy, local history, mathematics, and science, most of which are in the special collections archives at the Lewis J. Ort Library at Frostburg State University. Donald was also an artist, painting in both water colors and oils, and many of his more than 50 paintings hang in the Evergreen Museum and in Donald and Marianna's home in Mount Savage. Donald also enjoyed hosting friends and relatives at Evergreen throughout the years, discussing history, genealogy, philosophy, and science. Donald was on the board of the Council of the Alleghenies and the Evergreen Heritage Center Foundations. He was also a lifelong member of the B.P.O.E. Elks Club 0470 in Frostburg, a member of the Old Rail Post 6025 VFW in Mount Savage, and belonged to the Percy Cemetery Commission, the Allegany County Genealogical Society, and the Mount Savage Historical Society, and was the only living honorary member of the Allegany County Retired School Personnel organization. In addition, Donald was chairman of the Beall High class of '43 reunions for several years. He also enjoyed attending the Murphy reunions of his mother's family to exchange family news and genealogical information, and participating in the Bishields family gatherings of his Italian mother-in-law that were a integral part of his life both before and after his marriage to Marianna. Donald is survived by his daughter, Janice Susan Keene and her daughters, Gwen Marie Powers and husband, Chad Powers, and Tara Ann Kelly and husband, Edward Kelly; three great-grandchildren, Brooke and Aidan Powers and Kayla Kelly; sister-in-law, Patricia Keene; nephews, Gerald Keene Jr., Robert Keene and wife, Debbie Mariner; niece, Susan Keene Edwards and her daughters, Kerri and Taylor Edwards; he also leaves behind numerous special friends. Family and friends will be received at Durst Funeral Home, 57 Frost Avenue, Frostburg, on Friday, Sept. 22, 2017, from 4 to 6 p.m. Funeral service will be held at Durst Funeral Home on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2017, at 11 a.m. with the Rev.     FROSTBURG — Frank R. Keene, 83, of 26 Beall Street, died yesterday in Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, where he was admitted March 1. Born in Wilmington, N.C., he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Keene and was a retired employe of Amcelle Plant of Celanese Fibers Company. He was a member of Frostburg Lodge 470, BPO Elks, and was past exalted ruler. Surviving are his widow, Edna (Murphy) Keene; three sons, Donald E. Keene, Adelphi; Gerald A. Keene, Alexandria, and Frank Keene Jr., Montgomery, Ala.; one daughter, Mrs. Vera Mae Mayo, Montgomery, and five grandchildren. The body is in the Durst Funeral Home where friends will be received today from 7 to 9 p.m. and tomorrow from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The Eiks will conduct a memorial service tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home.     Friendsville. He had been in good health until January 20 when he suffered a stroke. Born in Garrett county, near Long Stretch, Mr. Murphy was a son of the late William B. and Sarah (Michael) Murphy. He retired about 20 years ago from his farm in the Little Savage river section, five miles west of Frostburg, and moved to Frostburg to make his home. He had been living with his eldest son in Friendsville since last April. Mr. Murphy was an active member of Johnson Methodist church and superintendent of the Sunday school of the church for 20 years. His wife, Mrs. Henrietta (Crowe) Murphy, died about three years ago. He is survived by eight children, Quincy. A. Murphy and Mrs. C. A. Fike, of Friendsville; Mrs. Asa Fresh, of New Germany; Mrs. Alvin Cook, Ernest Murphy, Mrs. Frank Keene, and Ray and Marion Murphy, all of Frostburg, and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.     Funeral services for William A. Murphy, 94, a retired Garrett County farmer, who died at the home of his son, Quincy A. Murphy, Friendsville, last Wednesday night, were held in the Johnson Methodist Church, Saturday afternoon. Rev. Charles Sisk, the pastor, assisted by Rev. Raymond Crowe, officiated. Interment was in the church cemetery. Mr. Murphy was born and spent his entire life in Garrett County, near Long Stretch. His wife, Mrs. Henrietta (Crowe) Murphy, died about three years ago. He retired from farming about twenty years ago and moved to Frostburg. Since last April he resided with his son in Friendsville. He suffered a stroke, Jan. 20, which hastened his death. Mr. Murphy was an active member of the Johnson Church and was superintendent of the Sunday School for 20 years. Surviving are the following sons and daughters: Mrs. C. A. Fike, Friendsville; Mrs. Asa Fresh, New Germany; Mrs. Frank Keene, Frostburg; Ernest, Marion and Ray Murphy and Mrs. Alvan Cook, Frostburg. He left also 24 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.     CROWE 22 Feb 1915 (Cumberland Times transcription) - George A. Crowe, 87 years of age, died and was buried from the home of son John Crowe at Johnson's, Garrett Co, MD with Rev W S Nicholson of the ME Church South and interment at Johnson's. He was born at Garrett Co, MD and one of the few remaining citizens who can recall stage coaches. His wife died 18 months ago. These children survive: Mrs William A Murphy; Mrs Calvin Wilson; Floyd, John, and Thomas Crowe of Garrett Co; Clarence and Eugene Crowe of Meyersdale, Pa.; and Mrs. Lawrence Finzel and George Crowe of Frostburg.


    DEATH OF G. A. CROWE, Died at the home of his son, Floyd Crowe, near Finzel, Md., Friday morning, February 19, aged 87 years and 91 (?) days. Neuralgia of the heart was ascribed as the direct cause of his death. Mr. Crowe was born in Garrett County Jan. 31st, 1828. He was married to Louisa S. Chaney, October 11, 1855, who preceded him to the spirit world July 14, 1913. Mr. Crowe is survived by the following sons and daughter: Clarence E. Crowe, U. S. storekeeper and gauger, (?) now stationed at Buhl & Gatesman Distillery; Eugene Crowe, bookkeeper for the Meyersdale Brewing Company, Floyd, Thomas and John, farmers near Finzel, Md., George Crowe, and Mrs. Lawrence Finzel, of Frostburg, Mrs. Wm. Murphy and Mrs. Calvin Wilson, of Belleville, Md. Two daughters are dead. He also leaves 50 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. He led a devoted Christian life and was a member of the Methodist Church from boyhood. Funeral services were conducted in the Emmanuel Chapel near Johnsons on the old National Pike four miles west of Frostburg, on Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, in the presence of a large and sorrowing crowd of relatives and friends.

    Mrs. Louise Crowe was born on the National Pike 2 miles west of Frostburg, Md., August 17, 1837. She was a daughter of Jesse W. Chaney and Susan Lohr Chaney, and was married to George A. Crowe, October 11, 1855. She died at her home near Frostburg, Md., July 14, 1913, after a short illness of apoplexy, aged 76 years. She was a lifelong member of the M. E. Church, of which she was very faithful, and a devoted Christian. She was a teacher in the Sunday school since 1871. She is survived by her aged husband, and the following children: Floyd, Thomas, and John who reside near the old home, Clarence E. and Eugene of this place and George of Frostburg, Mrs. Henrietta Murphy and Mrs. Annie Wilson, near Frostburg, Mrs. Carrie Finzel, of Davis, W. Va., and one sister at Lonaconing, Md., fifty grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren also survive. She was laid to rest in the cemetery at Emmanuel Chapel at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, in the presence of a large and sorrowing crowd of relatives and friends.
