March 20, 2008 - Cumberland Times-News - MOUNT SAVAGE - Lawrence "Larry" Adolph Rizer, 89, of Foundry Row, Mount Savage, died Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at WMHS-Memorial Campus, Cumberland. Born November 6, 1918 in Mount Savage, he was the son of the late George Rizer and Lena (Faulkner) Rizer. He was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Rizer. He was a campground manager and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He is survived by his wife, Ethel Mae (Williams) Rizer, Mount Savage; eight children, James Sweene, Omaha, Neb., Margaret Gallagher, Cumberland, Sherronne Holderbaum, Bedford, Pa., Jerrie Hoff, N. Potomac, G. Thomas Spaulding, Epsom, N.H., Karen Ross, Columbia, Pa., Stacie Hettel, Rawlings and Deborah Rizer; 12 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; one sister, Zelda Dom, Wellersberg, Pa.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home P.A. (eichhorn-mckenziefh.com ), Midland, on Thursday, March 20, 2008 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday, March 21, 2008 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Harry L. Burchell Jr. officiating. Interment will be held at Maryland State Veterans Cemetery, Rocky Gap, Flintstone. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made out to the Mt. Savage Volunteer Fire and Rescue, 15701 Iron Rail St., Mount Savage, MD 21545 or WMHS Home Hospice, 900 Seton Dr., Cumberland, MD 21502.

George A. Rizer, 92, of Mount Savage, Md., died Sept. 27, 1981 in the Cumberland Convalescent Center, Md. He was born in Mount Savage, and was a son of the late George H. Rizer and Amelia (Kirby) Rizer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lena (Faulkner) Rizer. He was a retired employee from the spinning department of the Celanese Corporation and a member of the Mount Savage United Methodist Church. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Zelda Dom, Wellersburg: two sons, Lawrence Rizer, Mount Savage, and Robert Rizer, Cumberland, Md.; a brother, Richard T. Rizer, Mount Savage: seven grandchildren: 16 great-grandchildren: one great-great-grandchild and a number of nieces and nephews. Friends were received at the Durst Funeral Home, where services were held with the Rev. Richard S. Davis officiating. Interment was in Methodist Cemetery, Mt. Savage. Md. Pallbearers were William Dom, Bradley Dom, James Dom, Thomas Rizer, Todd Merriott and David Martz.

He died on 8 Feb 1904 at the age of 38 in Allegany Co., Maryland. Mr. George Henry Rizer was killed at the clay mine of the Big Savage Fire Brick Company at Allegany mines yesterday. Mr. Rizer went to the mine with a man named Oliver Beal from his home in Mt. Savage, going into the mine with Beal. Mr. Beal, seeing that it was dangerous on account of some rock hanging down, told Rizer to go back a piece while he took the rock down, and thinking Rizer was from under it he proceeded to remove the rock, when Beal looked back he was horrified when he saw Rizer under the pile of rock & clay, which had killed him instantly. A jury was summoned and viewed the remains at Allegany mine. Judge John Chambers was acting coroner for the state, with the following jurymen: Messrs. Otto Hohing, Thos.Morgan, Henry Wagner, Joseph Welsh, Patrick F.Brady, Oliver Gerlach, Chas F.Johns, A.L.McKenzie, Oscar Hansell, Wm.R.Mattax, John T.Lewis, and Edward Bradly, who after viewing the remains, rendered the following verdict: that on the 8th day of Feb 1904, at Frostburg, MD, in Allegany county, the aforesaid Geo. H. Rizer came to his death from a fall of rock in the mine of the Big Savage Fire Brick Company; said George H. Rizer's death being due to his negligence and that we exonerate the said Big Savage Fire Brick Co. from any blame because of his death. The remains were brought to this place and taken to Messrs. Gehauf & Mauer's undertaking establishment on main street, where the body was prepared for burial, which will take place in Mt. Savage. Same paper - The Funeral of Mr. Rizer - The funeral of Mr. George Rizer, who was killed at the fire clay mine yesterday took place this afternoon at 2.30 pm from the residence in Mt. Savage. The Methodist minister of the church said the deceased was a very devoted and consistent member during his life, conducted the services.

Frostburg, Nov. 20 — Mrs. Amelia (Kirby) Rizer, 85, widow of George Henry Rizer, died last night at the home of her son, Howard Rizer, Mt. Savage, after a lingering illness. A daughter of the late Phillip and Sarah (Metz) Rizer, and a native of Mt. Savage, she was one of the community's oldest residents. Her father, an early settler in the section, was a wagon maker by trade, and known throughout the county. A member of Mt. Savage Methodist church, she was the oldest charter member of the Ladies' Aid Society of the church. Besides Howard, she leaves three sons, Richard T. Rizer, Frostburg, high school supervisor for Allegany county; George and Charles Rizer, Mt. Savage; and three brothers, George, William and Philip Kirby, Mt. Savage. She had 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. The body will remain at the home of her son, Howard, with funeral services Wednesday afternoon from the Mt. Savage Methodist church. Rev. Harris Waters, pastor, will officiate. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
