In a bizarre motor vehicle accident, an elderly city man was killed early Friday morning along Route 28, near Springfield, W.Va. Cpl. R. L. Johnson of the Romney, W.Va. detachment of the State Police reported Charles E. "Bill" Barham, 72, of 353 Bedford Street, apparently was crushed when the door of his car was forced closed on him. According to State Police there, the mishap occurred at 7:42 a.m. at the entrance to Springfield. Barham was southbound on Route 28, Cpl. Johnson related, and pulled into the parking lot of Mr. D's Tavern for a few minutes. Barham had exited the car, apparently leaving it in gear and the door open. Cpl. Johnson reported the car began to roll, and Barham moved with the car holding onto the doorpost. The vehicle continued across the highway and into a driveway where it sideswiped another car with the left side. As it struck the car, Cpl. Johnson reported, the door was forced shut, crushing Barham. Barham’s car is reported to have rolled farther, striking the side of a house nearby. Barham was pronounced dead at the scene, Cpl. Johnson noted. He said the medical examiner’s report indicated Barham had died of a crushed chest. Born in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Everett Barham and Viola (Allen) Barham. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Church and self-employed as a painting contractor. Mr. Barham was a member of the Cumberland Fire Department for many years. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Charlotte A. Cunningham, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Mrs. Patricia A. Donahue, Clearville, Pa., Mrs. Dorothy L. Rockwell, and Mrs. Sandra K. Wickard, both here; one son, John E. "Jack" Barham, Bel Air, Howard County; three sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Marean, city, Mrs. Kathryn Lindsey, Indian Rock Beach, Fla., and Elinor de Grouchy, Beverly Hills, Fla.; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Obit: Joseph A. McKenzie, 82, died yesterday at the home of his sister, Mrs. Ida Reitmeier, 208 Columbia Street. Born in Cumberland, he was a son of the late Enoch and Mary (Adkins) McKenzie. His wife, Cecelia (Whitacre) McKenzie, preceded him in death. Mr. McKenzie was a retired B&O Railroad brakeman, a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen, Men of LaVale, and St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Besides his sister, he is survived by a son, William P. McKenzie, Potomac Park; two daughters, Mrs. Regina Young and Mrs. Adeline Barham, city; 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. The body is at the Stein Funeral Home where friends will be received from 2 until 4 and 7 until 9 p. m. Requiem mass will be celebrated Friday at 9 a. m. at St Patrick's Church and interment will follow in the church cemetery. The rosary will be recited at the funeral home tomorrow at 8:45 p. m. She was aIso a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen. Surviving are her husband, Joseph A. McKenzie; three sons, Raymond V. McKenzie, with the U. S. Army, Leonard A. and William F. McKenzie, at home; two daughters Mrs. Adeline E. Barham, this city, and Mrs. Regina P. Mr. Enoch McKenzie, a farmer, died at his home near Winchester Bridge, on Saturday (Jan. 6) after a lingering illness. He was 60 years of age and lived here all of his life. His funeral is today with interment at St. Patrick's. Cumberland Evening Times, January 8, 1894

Mrs. Mary J. McKenzie. widow of Enoch McKenzie, died this morning at 8:30 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Joseph A. Reitmeier, Hickory St. She is survived by one son, J. A. McKenzie and four daughters, Mrs. John Seaders, Mapleside, Mrs. Edward Grabenstein, Winchester Bridge, and Mrs. James S. Leasure and Mrs. Reitmeier, this city. Samuel Adkins, Cleveland, O., is her brother, and Mrs. Virginia Morris, Frostburg, her sister.

Enoch Ambrose MCKENZIE and Mary Jane ADKINS were married on 26 Apr 1863. Mary Jane ADKINS (daughter of Henry ADKINS and Rebecca S. MCKENZIE) was born on 14 Jan 1844. Death certificate gives Jan 1844 as birthdate. Census 1900 lists Jan 1844 also. She died of angina on 10 Mar 1920 in Cumberland, Allegany Co., Maryland.
