    Mr. and Mrs. James O. McKenzie of Jefferson celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 1 with a surprise family cookout at their home. The event was given by their children and spouses. Among those in attendance were extended family members and friends. James Oliver McKenzie and the former Bertha Louise Shores of Frederick were married June 21, 1952, in Frederick.     Mr. James Oliver Mckenzie, 82, of Frederick passed away on Monday, April 8, 2013 at the Martinsburg Veterans Medical Center, WV. He was the husband of 59 years to the late Bertha L. Mckenzie.


    Born April 12, 1930 in Frostburg, Maryland, he was the son of the late Leo and Margaret (Baer) Mckenzie.


    He was a proud veteran of the United States Army, serving his country as a Sargeant, Tank Commander from 1951- 1953. After his service he worked at Frederick County Products as a butcher. He retired from the Frederick County public school system after more than 15 years of service as a custodian at Middletown Elementary School. He loved this job, helping and taking care of staff and students. He was a member of the AMVETS Post 2. Throughout his life he enjoyed spending time camping and boating. He is survived by his brother Ernest Swanson and wife Lena.


    In addition to his brother, James is survived by his three children: two sons, Dennis McKenzie and wife Cindy, Mark "Sparky" Mckenzie and wife Kitty, and daughter Cathy Spence and husband Orrin; grandchildren: April Mckenzie, Chrissy Schultz and husband James, Matthew Mckenzie, whom is proudly serving the United States Army as a PFC at Ft. Hood and wife Ashley, Lacy Mckenzie, Joshua Mckenzie, Paul Miller, whom is proudly serving the United States Army as a Staff Sargent at Ft. Sam Houston, Ashley Miller, Ryan Godles, Cole Spence and Heather Spence, Brad Dick; and four great-grandchildren: Hailey Schultz, Jaelynn Dick, Kolby Dick and R.J. Godles.


    In addition to his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by one brother, Blaine Mckenzie and one sister Ruth Summers.
    The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 10, at the Keeney & Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick, Maryland. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 11, 2013. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Pastor Kenneth Gill will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow at Resthaven Memorial Gardens.

    Pallbearers will be: Dennis Mckenzie, Mark Mckenzie, Orrin Spence, Josh Mckenzie, Matthew Mckenzie and James Schultz.
    In lieu of flowers, memo- rial contributions may be made to the VA Medical Center Voluntary Service, 510 Butler Avenue, Martinsburg, WV 25405.

    Bertha Louise SHORES died on 19 May 2011 in Frederick, Frederick Co., Maryland. Mrs. Bertha Louise McKenzie, 77, of Frederick, passed away on May 19, 2011 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of James Oliver McKenzie, her husband of nearly 59 years. Born March 21, 1934 in Sunnyside, MD, she was the daughter of the late Carl and Agnes Shores. She started her career as a seamstress working at Sagners and Hartz Clothing Factory in Frederick, and later at Magusta Mills in Brunswick. In addition to raising her family she was a caregiver to others. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed the outdoors, growing vegetables and an amazing flower garden. She was a pillar to her family. In additionn to her loving husband, she is survived by three children, Dennis McKenzie & wife Cindy, Mark "Sparky" McKenzie & wife Kitty, and Cathy Spence & husband Orrin ; nine grandchildren, April DeVaughn & husband Tommy, Chrissy Schultz & husband James, Matthew McKenzie, Lacy Dick & husband Brad, Joshua McKenzie, Paul Miller, Ashley Miller, Cole Spence, and Heather Spence; four great-grandchildren, Hailey Schultz, Jaelynn Dick, Kolby Dick, and H.J. Miller; a sister, Rosie Burrier; two brothers, Carl "Bootie" Shores & wife Nancy, and George Shores; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by four siblings, Ann Welty, Violet "Bobby" Baugher, Catherine Mayne, and Bernard "Sonny" Shores. The family will receive friends from 7 - 9 PM on Monday, May 23rd in the Chapel Mausoleum of Resthaven Memorial Gardens, 9501 Catoctin Mountain Hwy. (US Rt. 1 5 N) in Frederick where a funeral service will begin at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, May 24th. Pastor Ken Gill will officiate.     Notes:

    Leo McKenzie, aged 28 years, 9 months and 27 days, son of Joshua and Amanda (Arklie) McKenzie, passed into the Great Beyond about 4 o'clock Friday evening, April 8th.

    Mr. McKenzie was helping his father make fence, when he was stricken with a very severe headache. He told his father and said he believed he would go to the house to rest. After reaching the house he went to bed, never to rise of his own strength again. He immediately became unconscious and never rallied.

    The family, wanting to use every possible aid that man could give, decided to take him to the Memorial Hospital, Johnstown, last Friday afternoon, where he died very soon after being admitted. His death was caused by meningitis.

    He is survived by his wife, who was Margaret Baer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Owen Baer, and three small children, Blaine, Ruth Elaine and Olive. His parents and the following brothers and sisters also survive: Mrs. Elmer Landis, Boswell; Mrs. Jack Werner, Cresaptown, Md.; Mrs. Irvin E. Hostetler, Meyersdale; Hugh McKenzie, Mt. Savage, Md.; Mrs. Clem McKenzie, Finzel, Md., and Edna, Raymond, Harold and Velma, at home. He is also survived by his aged grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Francis McKenzie, and grandmother Arklie, aged 77 years.

    His remains were buried in the Loraditch Cemetery on Monday morning at 9 o'clock, in charge of Undertaker J. L. Tressler. Requiem Mass will be offered on Thursday morning at 9 o'clock in the Pocahontas Catholic Church.

    Mrs. Margaret Marie Gross, 82, who resided at 304 Redwood Ave., in Frederick, died Friday, Feb. 9, at the Meridian Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Merhle C. Gross. Born in Greenville Township, (Somerset Co.) Pa., on Aug. 31, 1907, Mrs. Gross was a daughter of the late Owen and Ellen Brown Baer. Mrs. Gross was retired from Frederick County Products, where she had worked as a meat packer. She was a member of the St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Feagaville. She is survived by three sons, Ernest J. Mckenzie of Bartonsville, James O. McKenzie of Feagaville, and Ernest J. Swanson of Frederick; one daughter, Ruth E. Summers of Frederick; 15 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Gross was the last of her immediate family and was predeceased by a son, Robert Swanson, and a great-grandson, Dennis Buchanan. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m., on Monday, Feb. 12, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 13, at 10 a.m. in the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the funeral home. The Rev. Robert C.     Transcribed by Betty Smith Joshua McKenzie, aged seventy years, of Greenville Township, died at noon Monday in the Miners’ Hospital, Frostburg, MD. He had been active until about ten days ago when he was stricken with a heart attack and other ailments. He was a son of the late Francis and Leah McKenzie. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Armada (Arklie) McKenzie and the following children: Mrs. Elsie Landis of Boswell; Mrs. Eva Werner of Cumberland, MD; Mrs. Ruth Hostetler of Meyersdale; Mrs. Hugh McKenzie of Mt. Savage, MD; Mrs. Beda McKenzie, Raymond, Harold, and Velma McKenzie, all at home. Nineteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by one son, Leo. Funeral services were conducted this (Thursday) morning at 10 o’clock in St. Mary’s Church, Pocahontas. Interment was made in the church cemetery, in charge of Jne F. Reich, local mortician.
