CUMBERLAND - Dorothy Mae (McKenzie) Thrasher, 83, of Cumberland, passed away on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center. Born July 21, 1930, she was the daughter of the late George “Frank” and Mildred “Mil” (Cunningham) McKenzie. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul L. Thrasher, Jr.; a son, Marshall E. “Ed” Thrasher; and a brother, James “Jim” McKenzie. Dottie graduated from St. Mary High School in Cumberland in 1948. She always talked about her senior class trip to New York City. While her children were in school, Dottie was very active in the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts and the PTA at Pennsylvania Avenue and Johnson Heights Schools. She was an active member of the Tri State Citizens Band Radio Club. Dottie and her husband Paul were active campers, and she delivered Meals on Wheels for several years. Dottie later moved in the Kensington Algonquin where she participated in many of the activities. She completed her bucket list by taking a helicopter ride in Hagerstown arranged by the Kensington Algonquin in 2012. Dottie never met a person she didn't like. She loved being around people and making them laugh. She was an avid Bingo player. She loved to dress up in costumes for holidays and special events. She was still doing backflips and headstands with her grandchildren when she was in her fifties. Dottie was loved by her family and all who met her and will be sadly missed. She is survived by her daughters, Paula Horn and husband Dick, Fort Ashby, and Barbara Hahn and husband Rick, Cumberland; a son, Ronald Thrasher and wife Lori, Cumberland; granddaughters, Lori Horn Stark and husband Eric, Bethel Park, Pa., Leslie Horn White and husband Darren, Cary North Carolina, Michel Hahn Diehl and husband Craig, Cumberland, Jessica Thrasher Matlick and husband Dan, Edgewater, Md., and Julia Thrasher, Cumberland; grandsons, Jason Thrasher, Oklahoma, Joshua Thrasher and Justin Thrasher, both of Cumberland. Also surviving are her great grandchildren, Makenzie Stark, Daniel Stark, Markos Stark, Bethel Park, Pa., Jacob Diehl, Cumberland, Abby White, Gracie White, Cary, North Carolina and Jara Thrasher and Kyle Thrasher, Edgewater, Md.; sisters, Mary Jo Growden, Cumberland, Virginia “Ginny” Crews, Ohio, Rita Markley, Cumberland and Sue Ann “Susie, Ohio; brothers, George “Bud” McKenzie, California, and Joe McKenzie, Ohio; sister-in-law, Norma Thrasher Smith, Cresaptown, brother-in-law, Gene Thrasher and wife Linda, Cumberland and many nieces, nephews and cousins. George Frank McKenzie, 80, of 122 Mullin Street, died Tuesday in Memorial Hospital. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mildred (Cunningham) McKenzie. Born here Oct. 6, 1902, he was a son of the late Milnor J. McKenzie and Frances (Maloney) McKenzie. Mr. McKenzie was a retired house painter and a former Celanese employee. He was a veteran of Army service and was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Also surviving are two sons, George E. McKenzie, Buena Park, Calif.; Joseph J. McKenzie, Chardon, Ohio; a grandson whom he reared, James T. McKenzie, at home; five daughters, Mrs. Mary Jo Growden, Mrs. Dorothy Thrasher and Mrs. Rita Markley, all of Cumberland; Mrs. Virginia Crews, Mentor-on-the-Lake, Ohio; Mrs. Sue Atkins, Painesville, Ohio; two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Miltenberger and Mrs. Catherine Koontz, both of LaVale; 29 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday at 9 a m. in St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. CUMBERLAND - Mildred Agnes McKenzie, 100, of Cumberland, died Friday, April 21, 2006, at Devlin Manor Nursing Home. Born Feb. 6, 1906, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Flora (Evans) Cunningham. She was also preceded in death by her husband, George F. McKenzie, in 1983; one son, James R. McKenzie; one brother, Samuel Cunningham; three sisters, Irene Cunningham, Edith Bauman and Catherine Williams and sister-in-law, Clara Cunningham. Ms. McKenzie was a retired cook from Farmdale Nursing Home, Buena Park, Calif. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church where she was a member of the church Sodality and Mother's Club and was a member of the Cumberland Senior Citizens. She was a volunteer at Devlin Manor Nursing Home. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be sadly missed by her loving family and many friends. Surviving are five daughters, Mary Jo Growden, Cumberland; Sue A. Atkins and husband Robert, Grand River, Ohio; Dorothy M. Milnor J. McKenzie, 89, of 513 B Street, LaVale, died yesterday in Sacred Heart Hospital, where he had been a patient four weeks. A native of Cumberland, he was a son of the late John and Elizabeth (Atkins) McKenzie and was the husband of the late Frances M. (Maloney) McKenzie. Mr. McKenzie was a retired street car repairman for the Potomac Edison Company. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, the Holy Name Society and the Potomac Edison Quarter Century Club. Surviving are three sons, Robert M. McKenzie, Cresaptown; George F. McKenzie, Buena Park, Calif.; and Daniel P. McKenzie Sr., LaVale; two daughters, Mrs. Margaret E. Miltenberger, LaVale; and Mrs. Catherine H. Koontz, with whom he resided; 19 grandchildren and 49 great-grand children. The body is at the Stein Funeral Home where friends will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A requiem mass will be celebrated Saturday at 9 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church and burial will be in the parish cemetery. Mrs. Frances M. McKenzie, 69, wife of Milnor J. McKenzie, 132 Hanover street, died suddenly in Allegany Hospital last night. She became ill at 2 a.m. yesterday and was admitted to the hospital seven hours later. A native of Romney, W. Va., Mrs. McKenzie was a daughter of the late W. H. and Margaret Maloney. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Surviving besides her husband are four sons, Robert M., G. Frank, J. William, and Daniel P. McKenzie, all of Cumberland; two daughters, Mrs. Margaret Miltenberger and Mrs. Catherine Koontz, of Cumberland; two brothers, J. Robert Maloney, Cumberland, D. Hopkins Maloney, Terra Alta, W. Following an illness of a year, Mrs. Flora E. Cunningham, 61, of 314 Grand Avenue, widow of Samuel A. Cunningham, died last night at her home. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. She is survived by five daughters; Mrs. C.R. Bauman, of Wiley Ford; Mrs. Bernard Williams, Mrs. G.F. McKenzie and Mrs. Clark Swartley, all of this city, and Mrs. Irene Cunningham, at home; two sons, Samuel J. Cunningham, stationed at the Bainbridge Naval Training Station, and Leo T. Cunningham, aboard the USS Frankfort. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren. A requiem mass will be held Friday at 9 a.m. in St, Mary’s Catholic Church and interment will be made in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church cemetery. The body will remain at the home.
