Hi Betty, You said: I knew I probably had this mixed up. Who did Zachariah, son of John M. marry? He married Martha Emmaline McKenzie, daughter of Patrick McKenzie and Lavinia Getty. He died 26 July 1891 in Bloomfield Twp., Indiana, of heart disease. He died 12 days after a son was born to him and Martha, which must have been very difficult. I haven't found what became of Martha after his death, but she died before Lavinia Getty's death in 1909.

    Notes:

Sponsors of the Children of John M. McKenzie (abt. 1795) Which Circumstantially Suggests that Samuel McKenzie (b. 1751) (“Old Sam”) was John M.’s Father - by Michael A. McKenzie May, 2014

1.Before we begin with the sponsors of John M.’s children, note that John M. named his second child Samuel. May be a clue.
2.May, 1819, Samuel McKenzie, sponsors: Samuel McKenzie and Hanna Logston. Is this Samuel (1850, “Old Sam”, John’s father and this boy’s grandfather?
3.June, 1821, Harriett McKenzie, sponsors: Moses and Catherine McKenzie. I think this was Moses Ignatius McKenzie and his wife, Catherine. Moses Ignatius was a known child of Samuel ("Old Sam") and would have been John M.’s oldest brother.
4.September, 1823, John M. McKenzie, Jr., sponsor: Helen McKensey. Query: is this a misspelling of “Ellen”? If so, this may be John M.’s sister, Eleanor (Ellen_ and one of Samuel McKenzie’s (1751) daughters. The fact that there is only one sponsor reinforces that Helen/Ellen was not married and coincides with the information I recently sent you with respect to Samuel F. McKenzie (b. 1805).
5.September, 1840, Peter McKenzie, sponsors: May and Basil McKenzie. The only Basil of which I am aware was the son of Moses Ignatius McKenzie referenced above. Basil would have been John M.’s nephew, and the grandson of Samuel McKenzie (1751).
6.May, 1844, Francis McKinzie, sponsors being Sam’l F. McKinzie and Reb. Garlitz. This could be one of two people: Samuel F. McKenzie (abt. 1791), who was John M.’s brother or Samuel F. McKenzie (1805), who I have proposed was the son of Ellen McKenzie of Samuel (1751).

    Conclusion
These are the recorded baptisms of John M.’s children in which I can identify the sponsors. In every one that I can identity, there is some connection to Samuel McKenzie (1751). Ergo, I conclude that Samuel McKenzie (1750) was the father of John M. McKenzie (abt. 1795).

News was received here of the death of Mrs. Barbara McKenzie on Friday last at the home of her son, Mr. Jeremiah McKenzie, near Sand Patch, Pa, after a short illness from old age and general debilitv. Mrs. McKenzie was one of the oldest ladies of that vicinity, being in her 87th year at time of her death and was well known and highly respected by the older population of Frostburg and vicinity. The funeral took place Sunday morning, the remains being interred in the cemetery near the home of the deceased, well-known as the McKenzie burying ground. Mrs. McKenzie is survived by one son and several daughters residing in that vicinity. The deceased was well known at this place having traveled through here for many years selling farm produce. Notes:

Per Jennifer Hanson, kuovi@earthlink.net, Patrick was killed by a falling tree in 1861.

In 1850, the faqmily lived in Southhampton TWP, Somerset County, Pennsylvania. Children Samuel, Thomas and Mary stayed in Somerset County, but the others went west to Indiana and Oklahoma.

Patrick's wife was Elinora Lavinia Getty MCKENZIE (1823-1909), for lack of a better name (almost every record I've seen gives her a different name!). She was born 29 March 1823 in Allegany County, MD, and baptized as Elinora MCKENZIE at Mt. Savage, MD, on 17 May 1823. Only her mother Jane MCKENZIE (?-?) and aunt Elinora MCKENZIE (?-?) (the sponsor) are named in the baptismal record; no father is mentioned. According to Elinora Lavinia's death certificate, her father was John HUTZEL. I have no further information about this HUTZEL-MCKENZIE connection and have found no evidence for a marriage between John HUTZEL and Jane MCKENZIE. Jane was the daughter of Samuel MCKENZIE (ca. 1751-1837) of Allegany County, MD.

After Patrick's death, Elinora Lavinia MCKENZIE lived in Meyersdale, PA, until her death on 12 August 1909. Her death certificate calls her Helena Nora Lovina MCKENZIE
    .

Patrick married Helen Elinora Lovinia Getty about 1840. Helen (daughter of James Getty and Jane McKenzie) was born on 29 Mar 1823 in Allegany County, Maryland; died on 12 Aug 1909 in Meyersdale, Somerset, Pennsylvania. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 11.  Helen Elinora Lovinia Getty was born on 29 Mar 1823 in Allegany County, Maryland (daughter of James Getty and Jane McKenzie); died on 12 Aug 1909 in Meyersdale, Somerset, Pennsylvania.

    Notes:

Died at her late residence, High street, Meyersdale, Thursday, August 12th, Mrs. Lovina , widow of the late Patrick McKenzie, of Greenville township, aged 86 years, 4 months and 18 days, being born March 29, 1823. Mrs. McKenzie had been in delicate health from the infirmities of age during the last six years and during the last two years had been in very feeble health, but was not stricken with her last illness until about six weeks ago. The deceased was born in Allegany Co., Md., and when young married Patrick McKenzie, and lived on a farm in Greenville township. In 1861 he was killed by a tree falling on him. After his death she lived with her family in the same township until 1869 when she moved with her family to Meyersdale where she resided until her death. Mrs. McKenzie was the mother of seven children, four of whom survive, the children preceding her to the grave being Samuel A. McKenzie who was killed by an accident at Garrett, Pa., a number of years ago; James A., who died in Oklahoma six years ago; Emmaline, wife of Zachariah McKenzie, who is also dead. The surviving children are Aaron, of Orland, Ind., Thomas of Meyersdale, Julius S. of Lima, Ind., and Mary at home. She is also survived by an adopted daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Cox, 44 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren. Mrs. McKenzie was a true Christian, being a devout member of the Catholic Church, and in all of her troubles and afflictions always found consolation in her dependence on the Divine will. If any person ever had their share of affliction and trouble, it was her. Her husband first and afterwards one of her sons instantly killed by accident, two more of her children died in the prime of life, while two others are afflicted with the loss of speech and hearing. All these afflictions she bore with true Christian fortitude and never repined at her lot, and though at times her resources were not abundant, still she always tried to help others who were afflicted. Until the spirit passed to the Great Beyond, she found time to glorify God and her pure and gentle spirit passed away thanking her Maker for the blessings vouch-safed to her. The funeral took place at 9 o'clock, Saturday, August 14th, from SS. Philip and James church, a requiem high mass being celebrated by her pastor, Rev. Father Looney. Interment in the Catholic cemetery. Hand dated 1909
