    CUMBERLAND — George Vincent McKenzie, 77, of Cumberland, died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2006, at his home after losing his battle with leukemia. Born Nov. 24, 1928, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Galitzan L. and Helen Marie (Goldsworthy) McKenzie. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Garland Raymond McKenzie, Paul William McKenzie and Virgil DeSales McKenzie; and also a very special grandson, Zachary Allan Winters. Mr. McKenzie was retired from the Kelly Springfield Tire Company with 35 years of service, where he was employed in the mechanical division. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict where he served for nine years. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church where he was a eucharistic minister, a nursing home visitor, and with his wife, taught religious education for several years. He was very active in his parish. He also belonged to the American Legion Post 13. Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Dorothy E. (Hoover) McKenzie; four sons, Larry G. McKenzie and wife Sharon, Spring City, Tenn., Richard R. McKenzie, Pittsburgh, Pa., Larry A. Messick and wife Cheryl, Cresaptown, and Steve M. Messick, Gaines-ville, Fla.; two daughters, Lora Shircliffe and husband Ansel, Potomac Park, and Lisa K. Conley and husband Michael, Fairgrounds; 12 grandchildren, Klinton Mc-Kenzie and Sue, Craig McKenzie and wife Tonya, Deidre Hays and husband Mark, Travis McKenzie, Megan Turner and husband Brian, Kelly Messick and Bryan, Kerry Messick, Luke Messick, Matthew Winters, Chelsea Conley, Nathan Conley and Aimee Conley; eight great-grandchildren, Morgan, Connor, Calab, Emma, Breann, Ella, Sean and Braydon; his extended family, Lynne and Tom Storey, Tyler and Devin, Cresaptown; and several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., Cresaptown, (www.scar-pellifh.com) on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. A celebration of George's life will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 8 p.m. with Deacon Dave Conley presiding. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Wednesday at 9 a.m. with Father Milton A. Hipsley as celebrant. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard. The family requests that contributions be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church, the American Cancer Society or the Western Maryland Home Hospice.     Gallitzen Leo McKenzie, 67, of Fairgo, died this morning in Sacred Heart Hospital shortly after being admitted. He had been in failing health for a year and a half. He was born in Cresaptown, the son of the late Samuel and Alice (Winters) McKenzie. His wife is Mrs. Marie H. (Goldsworthy) McKenzie. Besides his widow, he is survived by four sons, Virgil D., Paul W. and George V. McKenzie, all of Fairgo, and Garland R. McKenzie, Potomac Park; one sister, Mrs. Bertha Weber this city, and 16 grandchildren. He was a member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church and was a veteran of World War I. The body is at the George Funeral Home where friends will be received today from 7 to 9 p.m. and tomorrow from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

    Gallitzen Leo served in WWI along with his brother-in-law Paul Goldsworthy.

    Virgil D. McKenzie, Sr., son of Gallitzen, wrote a McKenzie Family History Book, which hopefully will be added to the McKenzies of Early Maryland web site someday linked to his name. He wrote:

    "My father Gallitzen McKenzie was named after the first Catholic priest that came to Cumberland, Maryland. And, to Cresaptown, Maryland. Before the first Catholic church was built in Cumberland, Maryland and Cresaptown, Maryland. The priest rode a horse back and forth. He was known as a circuit rider. He was a missionary. Father Demetrius Galitizin. Whose parish extended from the Susquehanna to the Potomac." (Page 40)

    He entered the service 26 Sep 1917 and was discharged 21 May 1919. (Page 61).

Born in Cumberland on November 3, 1900, she was a daughter of the late Paul and Anna M. (Helferish) Goldsworthy. She was the widow of Gallitzen L. McKenzie. Mrs. McKenzie was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Surviving are four sons, Virgil D. McKenzie, Sr., Bowling Green; Garland R. McKenzie, Potomac Park, and Paul W. and George V. McKenzie, both of Fairgo; one sister, Mrs. Regina Hinds, Cumberland; two brothers, Paul Goldsworthy, LaVale, and William Goldsworthy, Cresaptown, and 19 grandchildren.     Samuel S. McKenzie, 84, Civil War veteran and farmer near Cresaptown died at three o'clock this morning at his home. Mr. McKenzie is survived by his wife, Alice, and by three sons, Lewis, Walter and Gallitzin McKenzie. He is also survived by three daughters. Mrs. Elizabeth Hershberger, Mrs. Ira McKenzie, Mrs. Berta Welch and Mrs. Nellie McKenzie. One brother Enoch McKenzie, and one sister, Sarah, also survive.

    Mr. McKenzie was a member of St. Ambrose's Catholic Church of Cresaptown. He will be buried in the church cemetery.

    Mrs. Alice A. McKenzie, 78, widow of Samuel McKenzie, died this morning at her home near Cresaptown. She is survived by three sons, Lewis, Walter, and Galitzen McKenzie, all of Cresaptown, and the following daughters: Mrs. Geo. Hershberger, Cresaptown; Mrs. John McKenzie, Montana; Mrs. Edward Weber, Cumberland; Mrs. Ira McKenzie, Cumberland, and Miss (sic) Eliza Winters, Cresaptown. She is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Carrie V. Grant, Cresaptown, and Mrs. Charles Winterburg, Cumberland. The funeral will take place at 9 o'clock Saturday morning with services in St. Ambrose's Catholic Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
