    LAVALE - Charles A. "Bo" Butler, 81, of LaVale, lost his courageous battle with cancer on July 29, 2010, at his home. Born Oct. 18, 1928, he was the son of the late Lucy (Snyder) Helbig and Ben Butler of Cumberland. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Clara Boetcher; and his loving mother, father, sisters and brothers-in-law, Loretta McKenzie, Francis McKenzie, Willa Powell, Boyd Kent Powell Sr. and Thomas Maiers. Bo was a proud veteran of the United States Army where he served during the Korean Conflict. He was awarded the Purple Heart during his tour of duty. He was a 1948 graduate of Fort Hill High School. His burial will be the sixtieth anniversary of him being wounded in the war. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Annabelle (McKenzie) Butler; his daughter, Teri (Butler) Detrick and husband David, Ridgeley, W.Va.; three sons, Brad Butler of Raeford, N.C., Bret Butler and wife Cindy, Thurmont, and Rusty Butler and wife Beth, Cumberland; one sister, Thelma Earline Maiers; 10 grandchildren, Jason Detrick and wife Missie, Hollie Higgs and husband Roger, Tracy Butler, Aimee Butler, Brad Butler Jr., Tara Wiley and husband Jon, Lara Detrick, Kayla Butler and Kirby Butler; 12 great-grandchildren, Ashley, Jason Jr., Brooke, Tanner and Alek Detrick, Madison and Robert Higgs, Cameron Butler, Jahlile and Markeice Bowens, Avery and Trinity Butler. Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., Cresaptown, (www.scarpellifuneralhomes.com) on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian wake service will be conducted at 8:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Cresaptown, on Monday at noon with Monsignor Paul Byrnes as celebrant. Interment will be at Maryland State Veterans Cemetery, Rocky Gap. Military honors will be accorded by the Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard. Born Sept. 16, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Frances S. McKenzie and Loretta E. (Starkey) McKenzie. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Willa "Willie" J. (McKenzie) Powell and husband Boyd K. Powell Sr. On Sept. 5, 1953, Annabelle married the love of her life, Charles A. "Bo" Butler. He preceded her in death on July 29, 2010. The passion and priority of her life was her everlasting love for her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.     Cumberland - Francis S. "Beck" McKenzie, 90, of Gephart Drive, Cumberland, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, at his residence. Born Sept. 30, 1909, in Cresaptown, he was the son of the late George J. and Mary (Hershberger) McKenzie. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Loretta E. (Starkey) McKenzie in February of this year; eight brothers; and two sisters. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Mr. McKenzie was a former employee of the Celanese, Dade County, Florida Board of Education and retired from Mason's Barn Restaurant. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps Engineer veteran of World War II. He was a member of V.F.W. Henry Hart Post 1411 and Charter member of the Cresaptown Volunteer Fire Department. Surviving are two daughters, Annabelle Butler and husband, Charles "Bo", LaVale, Willia Powell, Cumberland; one granddaughter, Teri Detrick and husband, David, Ridgeley, W.Va.; six grandsons, Brad Butler, Sr., Fayetteville, N.C., Bret Butler and wife, Cindy, Thurmont, Rusty Butler and wife, Beth, Lonaconing, B.K. Gibson and Bertha (McBee) Starkey. She also was preceded in death by one brother, Randell "Bus" Starkey; and one sister, Marion Fey. Mrs. McKenzie was retired from the Cumberland Blouse Factory. She was a member of the Women of the Moose in Cumberland. Surviving are her husband of 70 years, Francis S.     July 14, 1918: Flag Raisng for Sons

    With over a hundred visitors present, a large Untied States flag was raised on a 40 foot steel pole at the home of George J. McKenzie, Cresaptown, in honor of his three sons who are fighting in Europe and a fourth set to sail overseas. Printed in the Cumberland Times "looking Back" Sunday, July 12, 1998.

    George James McKenzie, 83, retired Baltimore and Ohio Railroad track foreman, died yesterday afternoon at his home, Cresaptown, after an illness of two months. He entered the railroad service as a trackman, April 15, 1877, at Rawlings, was promoted to foreman in January, 1883, and retired in 1921 after 44 years' service. He was a native of Rawlings. Mr. McKenzie was a charter member of the B. & O. Relief Association and was also awarded a certificate of distinction for his feat in establishing a record for track work. His crew of eight men raised 840 feet of track and renewed 237 ties in one day. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mary M. McKenzIe; seven sons, Joseph P., Leo C., James L., Emery M., George H. and Francis S. McKenzie, all of Cresaptown, and William L. McKenzie, Spring Gap; a daughter Carrie, Cresaptown; a sister, Mrs. Nettie Alexander, Cresaptown; twelve grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

    Mrs. Mary Magdalene McKenzie, 81, widow of George J. McKenzie, Cresaptown, died yesterday at her home after an illness of two years. Mrs. McKenzie was born at Deer Park, a daughter of the late Elijah and Minerva (Shuck) Hershberger. Her husband died in 1940. She was a member of Cresaptown Methodist Church. Surviving are seven sons, Joseph F., Leo C., James L., Emory M., George H., and Francis S. McKenzie, all of Cresaptown, and William L. McKenzie, Spring Gap; a daughter, Mrs. Carrie Harmison, Cresaptown; a sister, Mrs. Nettie McAbee, Ridgeley; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The body is at the residence. Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow at 2 p.m. in Cresaptown Methodist Church by Rev. Louis F. Chastain, pastor. Burial will take place in St. Ambrose Catholic Cemetery there.
