John Howard Stottlemyer, 60, of 411 North Mechanic Street, died at ,6:15 p.m. yesterday in Memorial Hospital after an illness of two [months. He was born at Hancock, the son of the late James and Mary (Clingerman) Stottlemyer. For the past 13 years he has been a baker at the Community Baking Company. He was a member of the Bakery and Confectioner Workers Union of America. Mr. Stottlemyer is survived by his wife, Edna (Grant) Stottlemyer; two sons, John E. Stottlemyer and Francis J. Stottlemyer, both of this city, and three daughters, Mrs. Frances Blank, Mt. Savage; Mrs. Edward Woods, Portland, Ore.; and Mrs. Eugene Harris, Cumberland. He also leaves 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Herman Douthitt, Cresap Park; Mrs. Guthrie McKenzie, and Mrs. James Skelley, both of Cresaptown; and Mrs. Leroy Davis, Baltimore. Mr. Stottlemyer is survived by four brothers, Charles Stottlemyer, Cresaptown; William Stottlemyer, Hancock; James Stottlemyer, Vandegrift, Pa.; and Jack Stottlemyer, Baltimore; three half-brothers, Ralph, Michael and Kenneth Stottlemyer, all of Cresaptown; and a half-sister, Mrs. Homer Smith, Sharon, Pa. The body will remain at the Hafer Funeral Home where services will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. by Rev. Frank J. Fratto, pastor of Central Assembly of God Church. Mrs. Elva Edna Stottlemyer, 85, of John F. Kennedy Homes, died Tuesday in Cuppett-Weeks Nursing Home, Oakland. A native of Cresaptown, she was a daughter of the late John D. and Mary E. Grant. Her husband, John H. Stottlemyer, preceded her in death. Surviving are two sons, John E. Stottlemyer and Francis L. Stottlemyer, both of this city; three daughters, Mrs. Francis Blank, Mt. Savage; Mrs. Mickey Bosley, Portland, Ore.; Mrs. Eugene Harris, Cumberland; two brothers, Richard Grant, Cresaptown; John Grant, Florida; one sister, Mrs. Bertha Stottlemyer, Cresaptown; 14 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren. Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. today and tomorrow from 2 to 4 and '7 to 9 p.m. Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home by the Rev. While returning in a wagon to their home along Tonoloway Mountain, four miles west of Hancock, about 8 o'clock at night, John McCusker, his son, Claude McCusker, and William Pryor, who was in the wagon with them, were shot from ambush. John McCusker is the most severely hurt, having been shot in the back of the head, in the temple and in the back and shoulders. Dr. James A. West, of Hancock, who was hastily summoned, picked about 25 bird shot from his wounds. Claude McCusker was peppered in the face, as was also Pryor, who may loose his eyesight. Dr. West thiuks the sight of one eye is gone, as a shot penetrated the eyeball. James Stottlemyer, who was also in the party, was unhurt. The men were all in a merry mood and left Hancock shortly after dark in McCusker's wagon. They postively refuse to state who shot them, but it is understood a young man who had been husking corn in a field along the road is accused. The Hagerstown Mail, October 26, 1900.

James Thomas Stottlemeyer, 74, Cresaptown, died yesterday. Mr. Stottlemeyer came from a family of Western Maryland pioneers. His father, Andrew Jackson Stottlemeyer, was a soldier in the Union army in the Civil War and of pronounced native ability. Before him the family connection was prominent in the Hancock territory. He was a nephew of the late former County Commissioner Joseph B. Stottlemeyer of Little Orleans. Dewalt Stottlemeyer in 1824 at Hancock, was an undertaker's assistant when John Johnson, father of the great Reverdy Johnson, died suddenly at the old Light House in that place. John Johnson was chancellor of Maryland. Mr. Stottlemeyer in the days of the old Round Top cement mill near Hancock, worked for the tunnel contractors. He was a member of the Hancock Methodist church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Bertha Grant Stottlemeyer, ten sons, Charles, Michael, Kenneth, Ralph, and Paul Stottlemeyer, all of Cresaptown; John and William Stottlemeyer, Cumberland: Roy Stottlemeyer, Vandergrift, Pa., and Jackson Stottlemeyer, Detroit; five daughters, Mrs. Ella Douthitt, Mrs. Mary Cecil and Mrs. Ethel Skelly, Cresaptown; Miss Frances Stottlemeyer, Cumberland; and Miss Grace Stottlemeyer, at home; two sisters, Mrs. Laura Stineback and Mrs. Mollie Sutton of Baltimore; 23 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. John D. Grant, 75, a farmer of Cresaptown, died this morning at his home. Mr. Grant is survived by two sons, John and Richard Grant, both of Cresaptown, and by five daughters, Mrs. Scott Chilott, Mrs. James Stottlemeyer, Mrs. John Stottlemeyer, and Mrs. Edward Carpenter, all of Cresaptown, and Mrs. Howard Darr, Frederick, Md. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a. m. Thursday from the Cresaptown Church, with burial in the Cresaptown cemetery. The Cumberland Evening Times, July 11, 1928.

Mary E. MCKENZIE was born in Jan 1853 in Maryland. She died on 22 Apr 1931 in Cresaptown, Allegany Co., Maryland. Mrs. Mary E. Grant, 79, widow of John D. Grant, died yesterday morning at her home in Cresaptown. She is survived by the following children: Mrs. H. S. Chilcott, Richard Grant and Mrs. James Stottlemeyer, Cresaptown; Mrs. Howard Darr, Frederick, Md.; Mrs. Edward Carpenter, Philadelphia, Pa.; Mrs. John Stottlemeyer, this city, and John Grant, of Philadelphia. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the Cresaptown Methodist Episcopal Church, with interment in the church cemetery. The Cumberland Evening Times, April 23, 1931.

A. J. Stottlemyer, living near Hancock, was struck by P. & R. engine No. 540 in the Western Maryland yard in this city at 12:20 o'clock today and died in a few minutes afterward at the train dispatcher's office, where he was taken. Both legs and his right arm were severed and his body badly mangled. When picked up he had a silver dollar in his hand, which he held until he died. Mr. Stottlemyer came here this morning to attend to his pension papers and had gone to the railroad to take a train for home. He boarded the noon train from Baltimore pulling into the yard, and jumped off. The engine was moving slowly and the engineer claims he did not see Mr. Stottlemyer, who failed to observe or hear the engine. His mangled remains were placed on a stretcher aad removed to the train dispatcher's office, where he died in a few minutes. Dr J. McP. Scott, the company's physician, was summoned, but found it impossible to be of any service. It was not known who the injured man was until his pockets were searched and the pension papers found. The railroad officials notified Justice Hoffman, who then made an investigation. It is thought his death was purely accidental. Mr. Stottlemyer was aged about 60 years and lived a few miles from Hancock. He leaves a large family. His body was forwarded to Hancock that evening. The Hagerstown Mail, September 7, 1900.


Andrew J. Stottlemyer, who was killed by an engine in the W. M. yard here, took place this afternoon at Mt. Olivet Presbyterian Chapel, two miles from Hancock. Misses Mollie and Laura Stottlemyer, daughter of the deceased, accompanied the remains from this city to Hancock. The Hagerstown Mail, September 14, 1900.

Mary Stottlemeyer, widow of Andrew J. Stottlemyer, and her seven children, by Attorney A. R. Hagner, docketed a suit against the W. M. R. R. Co. for damages resulting from the death of Andrew J. Stottlemyer, who was killed in the W. M. yards in Hagerstown last summer by being run over by a train. He jumped on the Baltimore accomodation, mistaking it, it is said, for the train for Hancock. In attempting to get off the train after it had started, he was run over by a shifting engine. This declaration has not been filed, but it is understood negligence on the part of the railway company will be alleged. The Hagerstown Morning Herald, June 13, 1901.
