CUMBERLAND — Paintings by Maxine McKenzie, a remarkable woman who paints in a remarkable way, are on display at the Western Maryland Station Center during the month of September. Ms. McKenzie, paralyzed from the neck down since being stricken by polio nearly 34 years ago, began painting in 1975. She used a mouth stick, held between her teeth, from the bed of her Cresaptown home, where she survives with the aid of respirators. Painting by sight after looking at pictures, Ms. McKenzie completed numerous works over the years. She has sold quite a few and given others away as gifts to friends and relatives. Last fall, she presented one to Governor William Donald Schaefer, named “Black Eyed Susans” which depicts a bouquet of the state flower in a vase. Ms. McKenzie is creative in at least one other sense; she is a poet. She began writing poetry, typing with the mouth stick, in 1956. She published a collection of her work, titled “Live for Jesus,” in 1983, and dedicated it to the memory of her deceased brother, Donald McKenzie. Of all her poems, Ms. McKenzie reports that the one most people like the best is called “I Did Not Die,” which deals with eternal life after death. The final stanza reads: “My arms once again will have motion. New breath will come with a sigh. My legs will walk on those golden streets. Praise God: I did not die.” In recognition of her writing efforts, Ms. McKenzie was made an honorary member of the Tri-state Writers Guild last September. Proceeds from the sale of her volume of poetry go to support her painting. Throughout, her indomitable spirit shines through. When someone asks how she is doing, she replies, ‘Thanks to the Lord and my mother, I am doing just fine.” Her mother, Hazel McKenzie, cares for her. Her exhibit is coordinated by the Allegany Arts Council and Dustin Davis, chairman of Frostburg State University’s Visual Arts Department. Cumberland Times-News, Tuesday, September 20, 1994
