November 01, 2008, Cumberland Times-News ~ CUMBERLAND — Ray W. Kennell, 86, of Cumberland, formerly of Kennells Mill, passed away Saturday, Nov. 1, 2008, at WMHS-Lions Manor. Born March 25, 1922, in Wellersburg, Pa., he was a son of the late Albert and Clue (Troutman) Kennell. He is also preceded in death by a brother, Kerr Kennell; and sisters, Linda Kennell, Alice Booth and Dolly Bishop. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mary F. (McKensie) Kennell, whom he married June 4, 1942; three sons, Charles Kennell and wife Anna, of Ellerslie, Ed Kennell and wife Jennifer, of LaVale, and Ben Kennell and wife Tammy, of Kennells Mill; two daughters, Connie Aman and husband Rick, of Hyndman, and Annette Holler, of Kennells Mill; a brother, Jim Kennell, of Wellersburg; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Mr. Kennell served was a US Army veteran who served during World War II. He was a Tech Sgt. in 236th Ordnance Ammunition Company, serving in Italy, France and North Africa. He also participated in the invasion of Salerno. He was a construction worker with the Local Labors Union and the Hazelwood Construction Company. He was also a member of the Kennells Mill Sportsman’s Club. Friends will be received at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, Inc., 169 Clarence St., Hyndman, Pa., on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Roger Huffman officiating. Burial will follow in Maryland State Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap, with military honors by Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard.

WELLERSBURG — Augustus J. McKenzie, 74, Wellersburg, died yesterday morning in Sacred Heart Hospital, where he had been a patient for two days. He was a native of Sand Patch, a son of the late James and Rebecca (Bolden) McKenzie. A retired coal miner, he was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Mt. Savage. Surviving are his wife, the former Gladys Chisholm; 10 children, James McKenzie, Corriganville; Mrs. Susan Habersack, Cresaptown; Mrs. Mary Faith Kennel, Hyndman RD 1; Elwood McKenzie, Germantown, Md.; John T. McKenzie and Mrs. John Haines, Cumberland; Mrs. Shirley Diehl, Mt. Savage; Harry V. McKenzie, Harper's Ferry; Augustus J. McKenzie, Jr., Glencoe, Pa.; and Frederick J. McKenzie, Wellersburg. A brother, James McKenzie, Cleveland; two sisters, Mrs. Viola Zerbaugh, Akron, Ohio, and Mrs. Mary Blank, Mt. Savage, 46 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren also survive. The body is at the Zeigler Funeral Home, Hyndman, where friends will be received today from 7 to 9 p.m., tomorrow from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. The rosary will be recited on Monday at 7:30 p.m. A Requiem Mass wil be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. in St. Patrick's Church, Mt. James M. McKenzie, died at his home in Greenville Township at 5:30 o’clock on Wednesday morning January 11, 1939, at the age of 74 years, 6 months and 14 days. He was born June 27, 1864, a son of Ambrose and Rachael (Long) McKenzie.
He is survived by his wife, Rebecca McKenzie, and these children: Herbert, of Meyersdale; Elmer and Robert of Mt. Savage, MD.; Augustus, of Glencoe; James, of Cleveland, Ohio; Wilbert of Meyersdale R.D. 3; Mrs. Viola Zurbuck, of Akron, Ohio; and Mrs. Mary Blank of Mt. Savage MD. Thirty-eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren also survive. Two children, Andrew McKenzie and Mrs. Ada Manhorn, preceded him to the grave. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 o’clock on Saturday morning in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Pocahontas by Rev. I.A. Strittmatter. Interment will follow in the church cemetery in charge of R. Reich and Son, Meyersdale morticians.

He was a native of Somerset county and a son of the late Ambrose and Rachel (Long) McKenzie. Besides his widow, he is survived by these children: Herbert and Wilbert McKenzie R.D. Meyersdale; Elmer and Robert McKenzie, Mt. Savage; Augustus McKenzie, Glencoe; James McKenzie, Cleveland, O; Mrs. Viola Zweibeck, Akron, Ohio; and Mrs. Mary Blank, Mt. Savage. A brother, Andrew McKenzie, and a sister, Mrs. Alicia Menhorn, reside in Greenville township. He also leaves 38 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mr. McKenzie was engaged in farming all his life. Funeral services were conducted this morning in St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Pocahontas, by the rector, the Rev. L.A. Stritmatter, West Salisbury. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Rebecca McKenzie

Frostburg, July 28 – Mrs. Rebecca McKenzie, 76, widow of James McKenzie, died last night in Miners Hospital. She was a resident of Meyersdale, Pa. but for the past six months had been making her home with her son, Elmer McKenzie in Mt. Savage. Surviving are eight children. Elmer McKenzie, Robert McKenzie, Mrs. Mary Blank, Mt. Savage, James McKenzie, Cleveland, O., Mrs. Leo Zurbuck, Akron, O., Augustus McKenzie, Kennell Mills, Pa, and William McKenzie and Herbert McKenzie of Meyersdale. Also surviving are three sisters, three brothers, thirty-eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Mrs. McKenzie was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Pocohauntus (sic), Pa., from which the funeral will be held on Thursday. The body will be taken to the home of her son, Elmer McKenzie.
