  1. 4.  William Enoch McKenzieWilliam Enoch McKenzie was born on 3 Jan 1842 in Greenville TWSP, Somerset County, Pennsylvania (son of John M. McKenzie and Barbara Engle); died on 6 Jan 1881 in Greenville, Twp., Somerset County, Pennsylvania.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Name: William Enoch McKenzie

    Notes:

Per Ray Leidinger: “William Enoch McKenzie, born 3 January, 1842. Baptized 11 September, 1842. Parents John and Barbara McKinzie. Sponsor Mary Logsdon. Rev. L. Obermyer.” St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Cumberland, MD

William McKenzie appears in the 1880 Census for Greenville Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania. He does not appear in a census afterwards according to Sheryl Kelso (as of March, 2011). According to Sheryl, she believes William Enoch doied between 1880 and 1888 and that his wife, Eliza (Albright or Albreit) married a neighbor, Michael Baker, about 1898.

    1. William Enoch MCKENZIE was born on 3 Jan 1842. He died on 6 Jan 1881. He was buried in McKenzie Cemetery, Greenville Township, Somerset Co., Pennsylvania.

He was buried in McKenzie Cemetery, Greenville Township, Somerset Co., Pennsylvania.

William married Elizabeth Albright in 1863. Elizabeth was born on 16 Jan 1845 in Pennsylvania; died on 21 Aug 1921 in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Elizabeth AlbrightElizabeth Albright was born on 16 Jan 1845 in Pennsylvania; died on 21 Aug 1921 in Somerset County, Pennsylvania.

    Notes:

Comments: You are in the ball park. William Enoch dies in the early 1880's. Exact date unknown at this writing. Eliza, of whom I have a couple of photos, is hired by Michael Baker to care for his ill wife.

At some point in 1884 or 1885 Michael’s first wife, Caroline becomes ill with small children to care for. Michael arranges for a widow named Elizabeth "Eliza" McKenzie to be a caregiver to his ailing wife and children. The details of this arrangement are unknown but what is known is that Michael and Elizabeth produce a son, James Michael Baker born May 25, 1885.

James is 10 years old when Michael’s first wife, Caroline, dies June 2, 1895. In 1898, Elizabeth and Michael marry. Needless to say, I am sure that the household was an interesting one.

Michael is listed on the Census of 1900 as a renter in a household owned by his wife Elizabeth "Eliza" on acreage surrounded by the McKenzie Family; in-laws to Elizabeth by her first marriage. Michael is employed as a farm laborer, likely on Elizabeth’s farm. Elizabeth is illiterate while Michael is literate and in their home is their son James and a boarder named William McKenzie.

There exists little direct evidence of the nature of the relationship between Michael and Elizabeth. What is known is that on the Census of 1910 Michael is unemployed, 74 years of age, and living with his son Albert and Albert’s family. Michael is listed as being married and in his second marriage.

On the same census a short distance away, Elizabeth is listed as also being in her second marriage, but living as head of household with her son James, daughter-in-law Loretta and two grandchildren: William A. Baker and Eliza M. Baker. James is listed as a fireclay miner at the Union Mining Company in Mount Savage, MD while Elizabeth is listed as a self-employed farmer. That Michael and Elizabeth are living apart indicates much.

Michael filed for a pension for his service in the Civil War and was awarded a pension of $13 a month for disabilities connected with his service. In his application he states that he is unable to work because of back pain and chronic abdominal cramping.

The 1910 Census returns and the pension application indicate that Michael had become unwelcome in his wife’s home and felt that his income and company would be more welcome with the children of his first marriage.

In the 1916 obituary for Michael, there is no mention of his ever having been married a second time, or of Elizabeth and James. There seems to have been friction between the extended family members.

Will was sent to probate on September 8, 1921

In a follow-up from the author to Sheryl Kelso in Januany, 2014, she replied:

I believe she must have married a Dorsey Ward between the time that William Enoch passed away (1881) and when she married Michael Baker (about 1898). I have located a Dorsey Ward in the 1870 census, age 25, living in Cumberland. Oddly enough I had his name attached to her as a spouse with no known marriage. I have no idea where I picked up that info, but it was a side note in her file. How the two of them ever got together is a mystery, but apparently they did, and we may never know what became of him. Of course, this time period falls in the dead census years from 1880-1900. Beth Ann Magruder is direct line descendant of this family and told me a few years ago that she had stacks of info on the line. I have written to her and am hoping she finds something in one of those stacks to clarify this Ward marriage. I have also been in contact with Michael Baker’s gr-gr-gr-grandson who actually lives quite close to us. He is the one who supplied the copy of the Will I sent you earlier. His information comes from cousins on the Baker side of the family. As the name Ward is prominent throughout the will, I am certain Eliza married this gentleman before her marriage to Michael Baker.

Note from Beth Ann McKenzie on June 10, 2011:
Yes his wife did marry a man with the last name of Baker, and she had a son with him by the name of Jim Baker, My grandfather.. who was William Enoch McKenzie's grandson.. told me the story of his grandmother, and his half/uncle Jim Baker.. William Enoch was born on 1/30/1842 and died on 1/6/1881 My G-grandfather William Henry McKenzie was born just one year prior to his fathers death.. I have a good bit of family information on the generations following William Enoch McKenzie, and I do know that Eliza Known in my family to have been Elizabeth.. she was born on 1/16/1845 and died in 8/1921 Michael Baker b.4/19/1836 d. 7/1916 and their son Jim Baker b. 5/25/1885 d. 8/23/1952 I have other information but not really much more on Jim or Michael Baker.. they are I believe buried close to where I grew up in the Finzel area of Maryland in Garrett co. If you would like more info please let me know... also I do have a photo somewhere of Eliza .. another interesting fact is that she was blind the story I had been told was that she was a great Gardner, they would put ropes to the garden for her to follow, and she would tend to the garden.

I have been told that many of the people of that family, such as Catherine, Conrad, Samuel, Mary, Maggie, and maybe even John are buried in Beal Cemetery that is located up from McKenzie hollow road just over the Mason Dixon line, I have not yet gone there but may make it a point to go over the weekend, My Grandfather was Murrell McKenzie he was born 7/27/1911 and he died 6/6/1990 just a few days after the birth of my son, whom to my regret he never got to see, and My father was Albert W. McKenzie also known to many as "Wayne" but there were two Wayne McKenzie's my father was born 4/11/1938 and died 9/23/1994 he was 56yrs. old at the time of his death. My g-grandfather William Henry McKenzie b. 12/11/1880 and d. 4/21/1949 he married Lavina Machin on 8/10/1902 and children born to their union are as follows: Bertha Regina b.6/6/1903 d. 4/17/1991 Robert "Bob" McKenzie b.4/13/1905 d. 3/31/1986 in Florida, Harold Lee McKenzie b.1/24/1907 d. 11/26/1984 Fredrick b.8/13/1909 d.5/18/1985 , Murrell Cleland McKenzie b.7/27/1911 d.6/6/1990 Lloyd b.2/1/1913 d. 7/1/1913 , Albert Leslen b.7/19/1915 d.8/24/200 Richard William b.1/20/1919 d.2/26/1994

Possible husband Dorsey Ward - have been unable to find any mention of this man and can find no burial record for him.

In a note from Rob Wolford on January 27, 2014:
The family register from 1976 and 1992 both state that Eliza's maiden name is Albright. Neither identify her parents. The family register that I completed in 2011 lists Eliza's parents as John A. and Elizibeth (Keefer) Albright. I am unsure at present where this data came from.

She died on 30 Aug 1921 at the age of 76 in Greenville Township, Somerset Co., Pennsylvania.

She was buried on 1 Sep 1921 in Beal Cemetery, Pocahontas, Somerset Co., Pennsylvania.
PA Death Certificate - died of acute heart problems; widow

Elizabeth was also known as Elizabeth "Eliza" Albright.

    Notes:

from Miners Recollections, published in Cumberland Times-News, November 4, 2020
Fairy tales often include a beautiful young woman, a prince charming and a fairy godmother; they begin with “Once upon a time” and end with “They lived happily ever after.” Our Recollections often include a lovely young woman and her prince charming; fairy godmothers and “happily ever afters” are rare.
Once upon a time, in the small village of Upper Newbold, Derbyshire, England, baby Emma Hendley was born on July 28, 1849. As a child she became her papa’s helper, building chimneys in and around Derbyshire. One day, while scampering around a rooftop handing bricks to her father, a piece of mortar dislodged and fell on her, blinding her in one eye. As a mature young lady, she was skeptical that she would ever find her prince charming, but he was not far away.
John Thomas Machin (pronounced MAY-kin) was from the little minster of Southwell in Derbyshire. A minster was a town given to churches and their pastors; agriculture and coal helped to enrich the area. John was an iron ore miner when he met Miss Emma Hendley. They were married on Jan. 29, 1866, and for the next six years it was just the two of them. Their son George, born on Jan. 7, 1872, was the first of their eight children. His siblings Thomas, Mary Emma and Albert were born in England. On April 27, 1880, the family left Liverpool, journeyed “across the pond” and arrived in New York City on May 12. They settled in a home in Frostburg where they lived for about a year before moving to a farm in Finzel. Four additional children (Lillie, Lavina, John and Ellen) were born in the wide-open farm country of Western Maryland.
John Machin enjoyed 11 years of farming and clay mining in Finzel. Emma’s prince charming died on June 25, 1891; she became a widow at the age of 42.
George, the oldest son of John and Emma Machin, married Missouri Belle Albright on Feb. 22, 1892. Missouri was the daughter of William and Christina (Emerick) Albright of Somerset County, Pennsylvania. She was certain that George was her prince charming and they would lead a fairytale life; it was not to be. Their first child, William Albert, died at 5 months of age. A daughter, Mary Elizabeth, was born in 1895. The stork visited again on April 2, 1897, to deliver Mabel Gertrude. Their little house in Mount Savage was finally filled with the joyful giggles of Mary and some late-night crying from little Mabel.
On April 21, 1897, George Machin met up with Henry Snyder and William Saurbrine to ride a coal hopper pulled by a C& P freight train to the New York Mine where they were employed. Riding the hopper to work was a daily standard procedure. The trio of miners sat on the bumper of the hopper with their legs dangling down between the cars. The train traveled to the mine, 1 mile east of Frostburg, where it stopped at the switch to drop off the hopper and its passengers. Before the men could disembark they were hit from behind by an engine pulling empty cars. The legs of George Machin and Henry Snyder were crushed between bumpers; they were so mangled that each had to have a leg amputated. William Saurbrine was more fortunate and limped away from the accident.
George Machin died that same afternoon from his injuries, leaving his wife, Missouri, to care for 2-year-old Mary and 18-day-old Mabel. Missouri’s happily-ever-after became a nightmare; baby Mabel died on Sept. 1, 1898, when she was 18 months old.
Missouri’s job opportunities were limited; with a young child who needed her momma, her only option was to work from home, perhaps as a laundress. A year after George died, she married Charles F. McKinzie, a 28-year-old widower with two small boys; John was 4 and Jerry was 2. A son, Harry, was welcomed into this blended family in November 1899.
A few years later, Missouri’s health began to decline. She died at home on Thursday, Sept. 17, 1908, at 8:30 p.m. from dropsy (congestive heart failure.) Missouri left a husband and four children to mourn her loss; she is buried in St. George’s Episcopal Cemetery in Mount Savage. Within months another stone was placed in St. George’s inscribed C.F. McKinzie, born 1871-died 1908.
What became of the four children (Mary, 14; (George “Babe” Ruth was also a
student at St. Mary’s, having been placed there in 1902 by his parents who said he was “incorrigible.” He left the school in 1914 when he signed up to play baseball for the Baltimore Orioles’ minor league team.) What became of Henry Snyder, who lost a leg in the train accident that killed George Machin? Henry, born April 10, 1867, in Wellersburg, Pennsylvania, was the son of John Adam and Mary (Hostetter) Snyder. Little is known about Henry’s childhood. He was the fourth of six children born into a very loving and caring family. His father, John, died when Henry was 11 years old. In John’s will he describes his spouse, Mary, as “my beloved wife” and his children as “dear.” After his death, the oldest son, William, who worked as a laborer, became the sole support of the family.
Henry married Ella Bittner in 1891, and together they started their own fairytale. A daughter, Annie, was born in 1893, followed by a son, Henry Earl, in 1895. The growing family had established their home in Mount Savage where Henry was employed as a coal miner. Although Henry’s leg was amputated due to the train accident, he was blessed to have survived.
It can be surmised from the 1900 Census record that a child was born and died around the time of Henry’s accident, adding sorrow to injury. However, the stork remained busy; two bundles of joy were delivered in quick succession with the arrival of Raymond in 1900 and Roy in 1901. Henry, no longer able to work as a miner, was kept busy as a peddler striving to support his family. Son John was welcomed in 1905.
By 1910, Henry was strong enough to resume his former occupation as a miner. The increase in salary, although small, was needed; the family expanded yet again in 1913 when Dorothy was born. Henry and Ella had been blessed with a healthy, happy family. The fairytale, although fractured in 1897, was looking brighter until the U.S. joined the war on April 6, 1917. Henry and Ella’s second child felt obliged to serve his country. Pfc. Henry Earl Snyder, 22, of Company H, 313th Infantry, 79th Division, shipped out of Hoboken, New Jersey, between June 15 and July 8, 1918. Henry and Ella prayed fervently for his safe return. They received a letter edged in black; Henry Earl was killed in action on Sept. 26, 1918, on the first day of the Meuse-Argonne offensive in France. The heartbroken family watched their happily-ever-after begin to crumble; Ella, dedicated wife and mother, died less than a month later on Oct. 17, 1918. Henry Snyder remained active and focused; he cared for his children and counted his blessings until his death on May 13, 1955, at the age of 88.

Sponsors of the Children of John M. McKenzie (abt. 1795) Which Circumstantially Suggests that Samuel McKenzie (b. 1751) (“Old Sam”) was John M.’s Father - by Michael A. McKenzie May, 2014

1.Before we begin with the sponsors of John M.’s children, note that John M. named his second child Samuel. May be a clue.
2.May, 1819, Samuel McKenzie, sponsors: Samuel McKenzie and Hanna Logston. Is this Samuel (1850, “Old Sam”, John’s father and this boy’s grandfather?
3.June, 1821, Harriett McKenzie, sponsors: Moses and Catherine McKenzie. I think this was Moses Ignatius McKenzie and his wife, Catherine. Moses Ignatius was a known child of Samuel ("Old Sam") and would have been John M.’s oldest brother.
4.September, 1823, John M. McKenzie, Jr., sponsor: Helen McKensey. Query: is this a misspelling of “Ellen”? If so, this may be John M.’s sister, Eleanor (Ellen_ and one of Samuel McKenzie’s (1751) daughters. The fact that there is only one sponsor reinforces that Helen/Ellen was not married and coincides with the information I recently sent you with respect to Samuel F. McKenzie (b. 1805).
5.September, 1840, Peter McKenzie, sponsors: May and Basil McKenzie. The only Basil of which I am aware was the son of Moses Ignatius McKenzie referenced above. Basil would have been John M.’s nephew, and the grandson of Samuel McKenzie (1751).
6.May, 1844, Francis McKinzie, sponsors being Sam’l F. McKinzie and Reb. Garlitz. This could be one of two people: Samuel F. McKenzie (abt. 1791), who was John M.’s brother or Samuel F. McKenzie (1805), who I have proposed was the son of Ellen McKenzie of Samuel (1751).

    Conclusion
These are the recorded baptisms of John M.’s children in which I can identify the sponsors. In every one that I can identity, there is some connection to Samuel McKenzie (1751). Ergo, I conclude that Samuel McKenzie (1750) was the father of John M. McKenzie (abt. 1795).
