Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Paul Critchfield, Boynton; Mrs. Charles Martincie, Rockwood; and Mrs. Ralph Miller, Meyersdale; also seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Her husband James Swearman and a son Edward are deceased. Funeral service was conducted Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock in Konhaus Funeral Home, Meyersdale, with Rev. Harold A. Appel officiating. Gladys Pauline Critchfield, 89, of 139 School Road, Boynton, died Friday, June 18, 2004, at Goodwill Mennonite Home, Grantsville, Md. Born March 15, 1915, at Meyersdale, she was the daughter of the late James and Ruth (Smeak) Swearman. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul H. Critchfield. Mrs. Critchfield was a seamstress for the former Salisbury Undergarment Factory. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Meyersdale. Surviving are two sons: Paul (Bud) Critchfield and wife Betty, Salisbury; Richard Critchfield and wife Beverly, Fort Hill; one daughter, Connie Shaffer and husband Robert, Gibsonia; two sisters: Ethel Martincic, Lancaster; Elaine Miller, Meyersdale; seven grandchildren: Cindy, Tracy, Larissa, Ryan, Joy, Pam and Ann Marie; and six great-grandchildren: Nathan, Wade, Travis, Tyler, Dominique and Jesse. Friends were received at the Newman Funeral Home, Inc., Salisbury. Services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Gene Abel officiating. She is also preceded in death by her husband Charles F. Martincic in 2001; brother Charles Swearmann; and sisters, Gladys Critchfield and Elaine Miller. Ethel was a homemaker. She was a 1936 graduate of Meyersdale High School and was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Rockwood. She is survived by her daughters, Jean M. Haus and husband Thomas, and Kim L. Gadow and husband Yasser; and three grandchildren. A graveside committal service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Monday at Union Cemetery in Meyersdale. He died on 20 Dec 1945 at the age of 26 in North Field, Tinian Island, Guam. MEYERSDALE, Dec. 29 — Sergeant Charles Edward Swearman, 26, was killed in an airplane crash December 20 on Tinian Island in the South Pacific, the War Department notified his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Swearman of 34 North street. There were no particulars. A crew member of a bomber with the 20th Squadron of the Army Air Forces on Tinian, he was taken into the Army April 5, 1943, and went overseas last May. A graduate of Meyersdale High School, he leaves his parents and three sisters, Ethel and Elaine at home and Mrs. Paul Critchfield of Meyersdale. The Daily Courier, Connellsville, December 29, 1945
MEYERSDALE, July 13 — The funeral service for Sergeant Charles E. Swearman, 26, who was killed in the Pacific area December 20, 1945, will be held at 2 P. M. Wednesday at Konhaus funeral home here. Burial will be made in Union Cemetery with the V. F. W. and American Legion in charge of military rites. The son of James and Ruth Swearman, he worked at Martin airplane plant at Baltimore before going into the Air Force, serving with a bomb group. The Daily Courier, Connellsville, July 13, 1948
The body of Sgt. Charles Edward Swearman, aged 26, is expected to arrive in Meyersdale soon for reburial, coming via the Army transport, Albert M. Boe, which is scheduled to dock in San Francisco in the near future. Sgt. Swearman, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Swearman, North St., Meyersdale, was killed Dec. 20, 1945, in an airplane crash on Tinian Island in the South Pacific. He was serving as a scanner on a bomber with the 20th Air Force when he lost his life. He was inducted into the armed forces April 5, 1943, and went overseas in May 1945. He was stationed with the 315th Bomb Wing, Northwest Field, Guam, and following his death was returned to Guam for burial in the Agat military cemetery there. The body of Charles Edward Swearman, aged 26 at the time of his death, was returned to Meyersdale, July 12, for reburial in the family plot in Union Cemetery. Sgt. Swearman was born October 19, 1919, in Meyersdale, the son of James Swearman and Ruth Smeak Swearman. He graduated from Meyersdale High School, class of 1937, and was later employed by Glenn L. Martin, Baltimore. Death came as the result of a B-29 crash at North Field, Tinian Island, on December 20, 1945. His body was returned to his home base on Guam, and interment was in the Agat Military Cemetery on that island. Sgt. Swearman was serving with the 411th Bomb Squadron (VH), 502nd Bomb Group, 315th Bomb Wing, stationed at Northwest Field, Guam. In addition to his parents, he is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Paul Critchfield, Boynton; Mrs. Ethel Martinele, Rockwood, and Elaine, at home. He was a member of the Knights of Malta Teutonic Lodge No. 320, and Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Meyersdale. The service was conducted at the Konhaus Funeral Chapel at 2 p.m. July 14. The Rev. Howard K. Hilner, church pastor, officiated. Full military rites were extended by members of John C. Tressler Post No. 3504, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Charles E. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph (Fritz) Miller in 1992; also a sister, Grace Critchfield, and a brother, Edward. She is survived by two children, Sandra Heffley, Meyersdale; and Gerald Miller and wife, Barbara, Irwin; three grandchildren, Kristin Miller, Laura and Heath Heffley; and a sister, Ethel Martincic, Lancaster.
