Christopher Martens Is Taken By Death
Christopher R. Martens, aged 66, of 722 Lexington Ave., died of complications at 8:10 p. m. yesterday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Edward Summers. He had lived in Youngstown 20 years. Born in Pennsylvania, Mr. Martens came to Youngstown in 1912. He was a member of Grace Evangelical Church and well known in the city. Mr. Martens leaves his wife Kathryn Shell Martens, and the following children: Walter Martens of Frostburg, Md.; Mrs. John Jackson of Sandpatch, Pa.; George Martens of Meyersdale, Pa.; Howard Martens of Belton, Tex.; Cleaver, Leroy, Charles, Louis Martens and Mrs. Gene Webb, all of Youngstown, and 22 grandchildren. Two brothers, Henry and William Martens of Youngstown and two sisters, Mrs. Emil Sweitzer of McDonald, Pa. and Mrs. Pete Michaels of Barnsville, Pa. The body is at Higgins Funeral Home and will be taken to 722 Lexington Ave. on Monday evening. Funeral services will be at 2.30 p.m. Wednesday at the residence. Burial will be in Belmont Cemetery. Howard and George Marten, who reside near Meyersdale, attended the funeral of their father, Christopher Marten, aged 66, who died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Edward Summers, at Youngstown, Ohio, on Monday morning. He was a native of Wellersburg, this county. Among his other surviving children are Mrs. John Jackson, of Sand Patch; Walter Marten, of Frostburg, Md.; Leroy and Charles Marten, Mrs. Eugene Debb and Mrs. Edward Summers, of Youngstown, Ohio, and Louis Marten, of Dallas, Texas. MEYERSDALE, June 5 - Walter Edward Martens, 51, a blacksmith for 18 years, died Tuesday at his home at Frostburg, Md. He was a brother of George Martens of Meyersdale and Mrs. Pearl Jackson of Sand Patch. Daily Courier, June 5, 1940

Martens, Frostburg, admitted to probate in Orphans Court this morning, leaves his blacksmith and repair business in Frostburg to his son, George Franklin Martens, and the residue of his estate to his wife, Mrs. Emma Martens. The son was named executor.
Walter was the son of Christopher Rudolph Martens & Catherine Isabell Rizer. He was born Aug 30, 1889 in Allegany County, MD. He married Emma Tressler on Feb 23, 1911. They raised 9 children. Walter was the oldest of the ten children of Christopher and Catherine Martens. Born in Maryland, he did not move with the family to Ohio, but stayed in Maryland, the Mt.Savage area, married and raised 9 children. He was a blacksmith and wheelwright. He and his 4 sons retained the original spelling of Martens. Walter & Emma lost a daughter, Hazel, aged 10, in 1930.
The names & dates for their children come from the Martens/Marten/Martin Family Association which held reunions for many years of the 10 children of Chris & Catherine Martens & their families. The family history was originally compiled by Mrs. Margaret (Trehane) Martin (wife of W.A.Martin) and Mrs. Lena (Martens) Rizer (dau of Walter) in 1968. Several of the descendants kept records of births, deaths & marriages and sent the info out to the family.

An employee of the Edison Power Company, Youngstown, Mr. Martens had been a coal miner while a resident of this section. Besides his mother, he is survived by his wife, the former Miss Helen Ramhauff, and one daughter, Helen, at home. He was a brother of Leroy, Charles and Louis Martens, Mrs. Geneva Summers, and Mrs. Alpha Webb, Youngstown; Howard Martens, Belton, Texas; George Martens, Meyersdale; and Mrs. Pearl Jackson, Sand Patch, Pa. The funeral will be held Wednesday with burial in Youngstown.

Martens, Frostburg, yesterday won the 225-mile pigeon race from Chilllcothe, Ohio, conducted as one of the features of the Maryland State Firemen's Association convention. "Administration" covered the distance at a rate of 1,157.25 yards per minute and won for Mr. Martens a trophy, which was presented to him by John Seib, vice-president of the Algonquin Pigeon Racing Club, sponsor of the race. Lena is survived by two daughters, Linda (Jim) McClelland, Alexandria, Va. and Shirley (Robert) Lee, Salem, Ohio; and four grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister, LaVerne Yutzy, Pocahontas, Pa.; and a brother, Carl E. Martens, Frostburg. Services were held on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008 in Youngstown.

Eleanor was the daughter of the late Walter and Emma (Tressler) Martens and was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Beaver; two sisters, Hazel Martens and Emma Walker; and three brothers, Franklin, Robert and Elmer Martens. Eleanor is survived by a daughter and four sons; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother; two sisters; and her first husband, Clarence Thompson. Funeral services were held on Friday, July 30, at the Gebhart Funeral Home, Claymont, Del., and interment was in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, Del.

FROSTBURG — Carl Edward Martens, 80, of Frostburg, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2015, at Frostburg Village Nursing and Care Center. Born Dec. 25, 1934, to the late Walter Edward Martens and Emma Elizabeth (Tressler) Martens. He is also preceded in death by three brothers, George Franklin Martens, Robert Martens, Elmer Martens; four sisters, Lena Rizer, Hazel Martens, Emma Walker, and Eleanor Martha Beaver. He graduated from Beall High School in 1952 and served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1956. Carl was retired from PPG, where he worked in quality control and the accounting department. Surviving are his children, James Martens and wife, Carolin, son, Jonathan of Uniontown, Ohio, Janet (Martens) Stevens and husband, Jay, twins, Alex and Tristan of Eckhart, Julie (Martens) Forney and husband, John, of Millersburg, Pa., Jerry Martens and wife, Bonnie, daughter, Samantha, sons Joshua and Clay of Springfield, Ohio, Joanna (Martens) Schroyer and sons, Levi and Ben of Grantsville; sister, LaVerne Yutzy of Pocahontas, Pa.; numerous nieces and nephews. Carl was cremated in accordance with his wishes. A celebration of life will be held at First English Baptist Church, 136 E. Main Street, Frostburg, on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2015, at 3 p.m. with the Rev. David Sandvick and the Rev. Everett Spence officiating. Speicher and operated it from 1958-1988 with his wife, Evelyn. He was a member of New Hope United Church of Christ and the American Legion Post 112, Meyersdale. After retirement, he and his wife spent the winters in Florida and liked traveling in their Airstream travel trailer throughout most of the United States. The body of Edgar C. Martin arrived in Meyersdale, May 25, from overseas on the ship, Laurence Victory. It was taken to the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Martin, R.D. 3, where funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. The Rev. S. Loren Bowman, pastor of the Church of the Brethren, of which young Martin was a member, officiated. Interment in Union Cemetery was made under the direction of H. R. Konhaus. Edgar was born October 22, 1925. He was inducted into the Army January 19, 1944, and sent overseas in June 1944. October 10, he was wounded and hospitalized one month, returning to duty November 10. Two days later, he was seriously wounded and, December 18, 1944, died. He was buried in the Vasges area in France. He is survived by his wife Patricia (Danner) Martin; a son, Larry D. Martin, of Bremen, Ind.; a daughter, Linda E. Martin, of Lakeville, Ind.; one grandson and two brothers, George and Glenn, both of Meyersdale RD 3. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Edgar. He was a bulk oil and gas truck driver for Bellman Amoco Oil Co., of Bremen, Indiana. He attended Grace Fellowship Church, St. Joseph County. Services were conducted at 1:30 p.m. April 9, at the Community Gospel Church, Bremen, Indiana with Pastor Robert Hueni officiating, using the Scripture from Ecclesiastes 7:1 "A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death, than the day of birth."
