Porter, Kensington, and two brothers, John and James Porter, Ellerslie. Mr. Porter was a member of Ellerslie Methodist Church, where services will be conducted Thursday at 2:30 p.m. by Rev. J. L. John Ross Porter, 82, of Ellerslie, died today in Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland. Born in Londonderry Township, Pa., he was a son of the late Norman and Sarah (Stair) Porter. He was a member of the Ellerslie Methodist Church and the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Nellie (Waltman) Porter; three daughters, Mrs. Alma Thompson, Hyattsville; Mrs. Alverna M. Carpenter and Mrs. Martha Loy Holler, both of Hyndman, Pa.; two sons, Harlan E. Porter, Buffalo Mills, Pa.; and Richard E. Porter, Ellwood City, Pa.; one brother, James Porter, Ellerslie; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. The body is at the Zeigler Funeral Home in Hyndman where friends will be received today from 7 to 9 p.m. and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow. A 21-year-old county woman was killed and three other persons were injured, one critically, when the car in which they were riding crashed against the rear of a heavy tractor-trailer on Route 40, eight miles east of Hancock, early this morning. The victim, Miss Betty Jane Porter, postmistress at Ellerslie, and daughter of Harry and Lydia (Lowery) Porter, was pronounced dead upon arrival at Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown. State Trooper Raymond V. McGwire, who investigated, said the accident occurred about 2:39 when the car driven by William E. Clauson, of Corriganville, headed toward Hagerstown, passed another vehicle and hit the trailer at a place known as Park Head Levels. Clauson's condition is considered serious at Washington County Hospital where he was admitted for observation and treatment of extensive cuts and possible head injuries. (Myers) Burkett in 2015; and a brother, David Burkett. Survived by sons, Dale Burkett and wife, Barbara of Ashburn, Va., Edward Burkett and wife, Debra of Gaithersburg; a brother, James Burkett and wife, Ruth of Florida; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Mr. Burkett was a former member of the Ellerslie United Methodist Church. He was also a member of Ager Road United Methodist Church, Hyattsville. He had worked as a television technician for a over 30 years and then took a job as a technician with the D.C. Metro working on the fare card machines. HUNTERSVILLE -- Quentin Lynwood Griffey Jr. , 59, 10701 Huntersville Commons Drive, died Saturday (March 15, 2003) at his home. Born Aug. 10, 1943, in Allegany County, Md., Mr. Griffey was a son of the late Quentin Lynwood and Hazel Ruth Porter Griffey. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He received a psychology degree at Frostburg State College, a master's degree in education at the Citadel, and a doctorate in special education at the University of Pittsburgh. A resident of Beaufort, S.C., for seven years, he was a Vista volunteer and later taught students with learning and behavior problems. He started the Special Olympics program there. He continued his education at the University of Pittsburg, working as a senior teaching fellow. In 1984, he joined the faculty at Pfeiffer University, Misenheimer, where he developed the special education major in the school of education. A community volunteer, he worked with the Guardian ad Litem program, Habitat for Humanity, and Special Olympics. He coached Richfield Coach Pitch, T-ball and helped start the elementary soccer program. He volunteered in various Piedmont Unitarian Church community-based projects for the homeless. A son, Evan Griffey, preceded him in death. Survivors include son Adam Clay Griffey, Sylva; daughter Katie Griffey, Misenheimer; and brother Robert Griffey, Ellerslie, Md. MCHENRY — Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather Delos Marlin Carpenter of McHenry, born on Sept. 30, 1936 in Hyndman, Pa., passed away unexpectedly Dec. 4, 2013. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Wanda; his sister, Sylva Willison and husband Bob, Hyndman; his son, Dale Carpenter and wife Deborah, McHenry; and his daughter, Trudy Pickrel and husband Bill, McHenry. He is also survived by his ten grandchildren, Lee Pickrel and wife Amanda, Salisbury Pa., Michael Pickrel, McHenry, Nicholas Pickrel, Grantsville Victoria Pickrel, North Carolina, Dylan Pickrel, Baltimore and Christine Carpenter, Katherine Carpenter, Brandon Pickrel, Maria Pickrel and Miracle Pickrel, all of McHenry. He was also loved by his various foster grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as all the athletes at Northern High School that considered him their team grandfather. A veteran of the Air Force, Delos was an active member of the McHenry United Methodist Church serving as the Financial Secretary and a Board member, a member of Oakland Jaycees, founder, charter President and charter member of the Deep Creek Lion's Club, former member of the Deep Creek Lake Business Association, former member of the Board of Directors for Garrett National Bank, a member of the first Deep Creek Lake Advisory Board and was owner of Del-Wanda Motel, Water's Edge Court Motel, Grantsville Ford Sales and was the current co-owner of Tri-State Trench & Bore. He was a well-known and avid supporter of Northern High School as he was often seen at sporting events, especially wrestling matches, taking pictures of the athletes, which he then made sure they received. He also volunteered his time at countless after proms. His life, love and joy blessed the community and he will be sorely missed. He had previously attended the Methodist Church. After graduation he enlisted in the US Navy and served 4 years as a Hospital Corpsman in California and Washington DC during the Richard Nixon years. Afterwards he served an additional seven years in the US Naval Reserve’s Seabees unit in Cumberland. He was hired by Memorial Hospital and worked there from 1976 to 2009. He had competed his Nursing Degree at Allegany College of Maryland and worked in critical care, cardiac cath. lab, IV team and dialysis until health issues forced him to retire. He enjoyed playing pool and shuffleboard with the team from the Ellerslie Tavern. He had a keen sense of humor. Known to his family as “Pap” he enjoyed visits from his daughters and five grandchildren. He was an avid reader, student of World War II history and politics. He was confined to his home the past two years but taught us all about patience, accepting physical limitations, and making the best of each day. He will be missed by his wife of 37 years, Ann (Heatwole) Porter; daughters, Becky Porter and fiancé Dan Hinkle, Melanie Shaffer and husband Travis; five grandchildren, Jordan Kiser, Chuckie Crosten, Page Shaffer, Jackson Shaffer, and Natalie Hinkle; a sister, Linda Meanor and husband Dave of York, Pa.; nephew, Phil Meanor and wife Jen; niece, Beth Warner and husband Cliff and family. Friends will be received at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, Inc., 169 Clarence St., Hyndman, on Friday, Nov. 27, 2015, from 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday, Nov. 28, 2015, at noon, with visitation one hour prior. The Rev. Gary Pensyl will officiate. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to WMHS Hospice, 1050 W.
