ELLERSLIE - David Raymond Burley, 70, died here yesterday at his home. A native of Hyndman, Pa., he was a son of the late Wilson (sic:Nelson) and Catherine (Kirchner) Burley. Mr. Burley was a retired employe of the Pennsylvania Railroad and was a member of Ellerslie Evangelical United Brethren Church. He was also a member of the POS of A of Ellerslie and Tonkaway Tribe 120, Improved Order of Redmen in Cumberland. He is survived by two brothers, William N. Burley, RD 1, Hyndman, and Charles T. Burley, Cumberland, and a sister, Mrs. Josephine LaRue, Ellerslie. Services will be conducted Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Ellerslie Evangelical United Brethren Church by Rev. Harvey Williams, pastor. Burial will be in Cooks Mills Cemetery. The body is at the Zeigler Funeral Home, Hyndman, and will be taken to the church at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. Born March 18, 1917, in Stringtown, Pa., he was the son of the late William N. and O. Blanche (Madden) Burley. One son, Clyde “Pee Wee” Burley, preceded him in death in 1984. Three brothers and three sisters also preceded him in death. Mr. Burley was a retired former employee of the Celanese Corporation, the Mount Savage Bus Line and the Earl Clites Roofing Company. He served with the Army Air Corps in World War II. He was a Methodist by faith and was an active lifetime member and fire policeman for the Corriganville Volunteer Fire Company. Surviving are his wife, Charlotte “Lottie” (Stuckey) Burley; two sons, Richard Burley, Corriganville; and Clarence Stuckey, Harrisburg, Pa.; two brothers, George Burley, RD 1, Hyndman, Pa.; and Kenneth Burley, Ellerslie; one sister, Charlotte E. LaRue, son of Mrs. Josephine LaRue, Ellerslie, shot down a Jap Zero the latter part of last month, according to dispatches from Rangoon, India. Sgt. Larue, top turret gunner on a four-engine U. S. bomber, saved himself and his plane mates by turning loose a terrific burst of fire on the Zero as it was diving. The Zero peeled off to the left before firing a shot and burst into flames. "The twin-50s did it," Larue said. "They're great guns." Larue enlisted May 5, 1941. He trained at Tampa Field and Maxwell Field, Fla., and since getting into the thick of the aerial warfare, he's seen service in the Middle East, Egypt and India. LaRue previously had been reported as missing in action in the Burma theatre of operations. The soldier entered the service in 1942 and was assigned to the Army Air Forces. He was trained as a turret gunner and had been overseas for several months prior to being reported missing in action. The deceased was a graduate of the Hyndman High School. High School - Parents: Clarence and Josephine LaRue. - Jesse's name is on Veterans La Rue was a gunner on a B-24D assigned to the Tenth Air Force, 7th Bombardment Group, 9th Bombardment Squadron. They were taking part in a mission of four planes to bomb the Pazundaung Bridge at Rangoon, Burma. The formation was attacked by at least seven Japanese fighters, and though the crews fought gallantly, the enemy succeeded in shooting down La Rue's and another plane. They crashed into the Gulf of Martaban, a few miles south of Rangoon. There were no survivors.

He was from Allegany County, MD, and received the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.

La Rue is also memorialized on the Tablets of the Missing in the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial in the Philippines.

LAVALE — Roy C. LaRue, 87, of LaVale, passed away on Tuesday, March 1, 2011, at the WMHS Frostburg Nursing and Rehab Center. Born May 12, 1923, in Ellerslie, Pa., he was the son of the late Clarence and Josephine (Burley) LaRue. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jesse LaRue; and mother and father-in-law, Clarence and Angie Thomas. Mr. LaRue was an Army veteran serving his country during World War II. He was a member of the Eckhart Baptist Church, where he was an active member. He served as deacon for over 35 years, Sunday school superintendent, Sunday school teacher, Awana commander and retired as a deacon emeritus. He worked as a parts manager for various garages and retired from Gateway Motors. He is survived by his wife, Dona Jean (Thomas) LaRue; two sons, David LaRue, LaVale, and Paul LaRue, Watauga, Tenn.; and a daughter, JoAnne LaRue, LaVale. Friends will be received at the Sowers Funeral Home, P.A., on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday, March 5, 2011, at 1 p.m. with Pastor David Sandvick and Pastor Matt Eichhorn officiating. American Legion Farrady Post 24 will accord military honors at the graveside. Interment will be in the Eckhart Cemetery.

In addition to his parents he is survived by his wife, Dainese (Harman) Burley, two sons, Larry Raymond Van Meter and Donnie J. Burley, both at home; and by four daughters, Dainese E. Van Meter, Linda Lorraine Van Meter, Daina Renee Van Meter, and Shellie Marie Burley, all at home. Darlene Marie Faulkner, 71, of Hyndman, went to be with her Lord and Savior Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2016, at her home. Born Feb. 3, 1945, in Cumberland, Mrs. Faulkner was the daughter of the late Robert Allen Printy and Reada Marie (Burley) Printy. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Robert "Sonny" A. Printy, Jr. Darlene was a former employee of Prestige Cleaning and the Kensington Algonquin. She currently worked at Tri- State Ministry Center, where she was also a member. Darlene is survived by her husband of 50 years, Willard "Tiny" Faulkner; and her sister, Betty Klahre, Hyndman. She also leaves behind her niece, Catherine Reed and husband, Larry; her nephew, Johnny Klahre; her great nieces, Kyleigh Klahre and Katelynn Murray and husband, Nathan; her great nephew, Kyle Reed and wife, Sara; and her great-great nieces, Madison, Noelle, and Caroline Murray; all of Hyndman. Friends will be received at the Tri-State Ministry Center, Hyndman, on Friday, Oct. 7, 2016. A funeral service will be conducted at the Tri-State Ministry Center, on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2016, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Steve Leydig officiating.
