Norman was orphaned in 1855 at age 4 and, with his three sisters, raised by relatives.

About 1870, he married Anna Stair (1850 - 1875), the daughter of Augustus Stair (originally spelled Stohr, immigrants from Hesse, Germany) and produced sons Oscar Howard and William Augustus and two daughters who apparently died at or near birth. Anna herself died prematurely of pneumonia in 1875 and two years later Norman asked Anna's sister, Sarah Stair, to marry him. She is reported to have said "not until you get a headstone for my
sister," which apparently was speedily done. Norman's marriage (on December 18, 1877) to "Sarah E. Stoer" (sic) is recorded in records of the Wellersburg Reformed Church, Somerset County, Pa. A fee of $3.00 was paid. Earlier that year (August 28) Norman's Uncle Thomas Jackson Porter and Aunt Rebecca Porter had left him 39 acres of land in Londonderry Township, Pa., including all the buildings and improvements. Later in 1877 he sold some of this land to his sister Sarah (Porter) Clites. He sold additional land to Daniel Clites (Sarah's husband) in 1890 and to Shannon Brant in 1891. Norman and Sarah produced sons Harry Robert (1878), John Ross (1882) and James Vernon (1884) and a daughter, Anna M. Porter who died in 1882 at age 2. When Sarah also died (in 1890) Norman is said to have farmed out the boys to various families, taking son John Ross to live on the Cook farm in Ellerslie, Md. Norman worked as a hosteler on the Pennsylvania Railroad and when each of his boys turned 15 he also got them jobs on the railroad. Norman served as president of the Patriotic Order of the Sons of America Lodge located in Ellerslie. He lived in a house just below the present Porter Cemetery near Stringtown, Pa. and donated the land used for the cemetery. In August 1917, Norman was living with son John Ross at John's farm in Ridgeley, West Virginia, when he fell from a peach crate onto a stake. Although treated at the Western Maryland Hospital, peritonitis set in from a lacerated bowel and a hernia, causing his death at age 66 years, 6 months, 9 days. Louis Stein was his undertaker. Norman's will, which had been signed April 11, 1907, named James Vernon as Executor and divided Norman's estate into fifth's, a fifth for each of his four living sons (Oscar, Harry, John and James), and a fifth to be divided by Clara (Lowery) Porter, (by then the widow of William Augustus) and their daughter Mildred Viola Porter.

Four sons, Charles, William, Albert and Roy Clites, and two daughters, Mrs. Anna Lowery and Mrs. Nina Bohn, survive. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at the home at 2:30 p.m. Rev. D. B. William A. Porter, son of Norman Porter, of Ellerslie, died on Sunday at the University of Pennsylvania hospital, Philadelphia, from Bright's disease, aged twenty-eight years. He was a fireman on the Bedford division of the Pennsylvania railroad and his remains were brought home for interment on Tuesday. He leaves a widow and one child. HYNDMAN - William Henry Clites, 90, of RD 1, Hyndman, died yesterday. Born near Hyndman, he was a son of'the late Daniel and Sarah (Porter) Clites and was the husband of the late Anna May (Madden) Clites. Mr. Clites was a retired employe of Kelly-Springfield Tire Company and was a member of Ellerslie Evangelical United Brethren Church. Surviving are five children: George E. Brown, Hyndman; Mrs. Catherine S. Jewell, RD 1, Hyndman; Daniel C. Clites, Baltimore; Mrs. Elizabeth N. Boor, Winchester Road, Cumberland; and Mrs. Hilda E. Robertson, Erie; a brother, Roy Clites, Ellerslie; a sister, Mrs. Nina Bohn, RD 1 Hyndman; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Annie Matilda Lowery, 65, widow of the late Noah Lowery, of Bedford county, died yesterday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Goldie Sarah Shroycr, Corrigansville. A native of Bedford county, where she lived her entire life, Mrs. Lowery was the daughter of the late Daniel and Sarah Porter Clites. She was a member of Cook's Mill Methodist church. Besides Mrs. Shroyer, the following children survive: Harvey G., Alvin E. and Virgil D. Lowery, all of Hyndman R D. 1, and Orville L. Lowery, of Ellerslie. Other survivors include three brothers, William H. Clites, Corriganville; Albert R. Clites, Hyndman, and Roy C. Clites, Altoona, and one sister, Mrs. Mina R. Bonn, Hyndman, R.D. 1. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon from Cook's Mill chapel, with the Rev. Owens, assisted by the Rev. W. T. Kemp, of Ellerslie, officiating. Interment was in Porter's cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Mary (Campbell) Clites; a daughter, Mrs. Alverna Stuckey, Mechanicsburg; a son Willie R. A 21-year-old county woman was killed and three other persons were injured, one critically, when the car in which they were riding crashed against the rear of a heavy tractor-trailer on Route 40, eight miles east of Hancock, early this morning. The victim, Miss Betty Jane Porter, postmistress at Ellerslie, and daughter of Harry and Lydia (Lowery) Porter, was pronounced dead upon arrival at Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown. State Trooper Raymond V. McGwire, who investigated, said the accident occurred about 2:39 when the car driven by William E. Clauson, of Corriganville, headed toward Hagerstown, passed another vehicle and hit the trailer at a place known as Park Head Levels. Clauson's condition is considered serious at Washington County Hospital where he was admitted for observation and treatment of extensive cuts and possible head injuries. Surviving are his widow, Virginia (Cook) Porter; a son, James N. Porter, Jr., Durham, N. C.; three daughters, Judith, Kathryn and Linda Porter, all at home; two brothers, Fred T. Porter, Hyndman, and Robert L. Porter, Anaheim, Calif.; a half-sister, Mrs. Janet Williams, Mt. Savage, and two grandsons. The body will be at the Kipple Funeral Home in Greensburg. Mr. Porter was a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, served with the U.S. Army in the Aleution Islands in World War II, and retired with 27 years of service with Hyndman High School as a geography and drivers education teacher. He was a member of the Hyndman First United Methodist Church, the Hyndman VFW Oscar Jordan Post 7375, a 35-year member and past president of the Hyndman-Londonderry Lions Club, and a member of United Commercial Travelers and the Pennsylvania State Education Society. Virgil Daniel Lowery, 60, Hyndman RD 1, died at the Cumberland Hospital, Tuesday, January 9, 1968. He was born June 19, 1907, a son of the late Noah and Annie (Clites) Lowery. He is survived by his wife, Nellie Hosselrode and three children, Mrs. Kathleen Emerick and Mrs. Sandra Mallery both of Hyndman RD 1, and Clyde Lowery of Wayne, Mich.; three brothers, Harvey and Alvin, both of Hyndman RD 1 and Orville of Ellerslie, Md.; and a sister, Mrs. Goldie Shroyer of Ellerslie, Md. Also surviving are five grandchildren. He was a retired employe of Celanese, a member of the Wills Creek Methodist Church and the P:O.S. of A. of Ellerslie. He was a trustee and a member of the official board of the church. Funeral services Friday, January 12 at 2 p.m. from the Zeigler Funeral Home, Hyndman, with the Rev. Milton M. Benny Jr. officiating. Orvil Lester Lowery, 64, of Elierslie, died yesterday at his home of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Maryland State Police. A native of RD 1, Hyndman, he was a son of the late Noah and Annie (Clites) Lowery. He was a retired Celanese Fibers Company employe and was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, Elierslie. Surviving are his widow, Alice (Campbell) Lowery; two sons, Donald W. Lowery, Ellerslie, and Twain N. Lowery, Corriganville; a brother, Harvey Lowery, RD I, Hyndman; a sister, Mrs. Goldie Shroyer, Ellerslie, and five grandchildren. The body will be at the Zeigler Funeral Home, Hyndman, where friends will be received tomorrow from 2 until 4 and 7 until 9 p.m. A service will be conducted there Saturday at 2 p.m. Rev. Gene R.
