Norman was orphaned in 1855 at age 4 and, with his three sisters, raised by relatives.

About 1870, he married Anna Stair (1850 - 1875), the daughter of Augustus Stair (originally spelled Stohr, immigrants from Hesse, Germany) and produced sons Oscar Howard and William Augustus and two daughters who apparently died at or near birth. Anna herself died prematurely of pneumonia in 1875 and two years later Norman asked Anna's sister, Sarah Stair, to marry him. She is reported to have said "not until you get a headstone for my
sister," which apparently was speedily done. Norman's marriage (on December 18, 1877) to "Sarah E. Stoer" (sic) is recorded in records of the Wellersburg Reformed Church, Somerset County, Pa. A fee of $3.00 was paid. Earlier that year (August 28) Norman's Uncle Thomas Jackson Porter and Aunt Rebecca Porter had left him 39 acres of land in Londonderry Township, Pa., including all the buildings and improvements. Later in 1877 he sold some of this land to his sister Sarah (Porter) Clites. He sold additional land to Daniel Clites (Sarah's husband) in 1890 and to Shannon Brant in 1891. Norman and Sarah produced sons Harry Robert (1878), John Ross (1882) and James Vernon (1884) and a daughter, Anna M. Porter who died in 1882 at age 2. When Sarah also died (in 1890) Norman is said to have farmed out the boys to various families, taking son John Ross to live on the Cook farm in Ellerslie, Md. Norman worked as a hosteler on the Pennsylvania Railroad and when each of his boys turned 15 he also got them jobs on the railroad. Norman served as president of the Patriotic Order of the Sons of America Lodge located in Ellerslie. He lived in a house just below the present Porter Cemetery near Stringtown, Pa. and donated the land used for the cemetery. In August 1917, Norman was living with son John Ross at John's farm in Ridgeley, West Virginia, when he fell from a peach crate onto a stake. Although treated at the Western Maryland Hospital, peritonitis set in from a lacerated bowel and a hernia, causing his death at age 66 years, 6 months, 9 days. Louis Stein was his undertaker. Norman's will, which had been signed April 11, 1907, named James Vernon as Executor and divided Norman's estate into fifth's, a fifth for each of his four living sons (Oscar, Harry, John and James), and a fifth to be divided by Clara (Lowery) Porter, (by then the widow of William Augustus) and their daughter Mildred Viola Porter.

Mrs. Sarah Catherine Clites, 83, of near Ellerslie, widow of Daniel Clites, died at her home early this morning. Four sons, Charles, William, Albert and Roy Clites, and two daughters, Mrs. Anna Lowery and Mrs. Nina Bohn, survive. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at the home at 2:30 p.m. Rev. D. B. He was the oldest resident of Frostburg, and was retired from the Berkowitz Company. Mr. Logsdon was a member of the Frostburg United Methodist Church and had served on the administrative board. Twice married, his first wife Frances (Wilson) Logsdon, and his second wife, Margaret (Dickey) Logsdon, both preceded him in death. He is survived by a number of nieces and nephews. Rev. Shewbridge, pastor, will officiate. Mrs. Crawford died following an operation for the amputation of a leg, which followed the amputation of the other one, with pneumonia held as partly responsible for her demise. She was a daughter of the late Susannah and James Winebrenner of Mt. Savage. She lived in Moscow for 13 years, going there from Mt. Savage. Enoch Logsdon, of Eckhart, Victim of Cruel Driver, Who Sped Away from Scene
Frostburg, Md., Dec. 1 - The automobilist who strikes down a pedestrian and speeds away, leaving his victim unconscious and bleeding along the road, claimed his third victim last night when Enoch Logsdon, 62 years old, a retired miner of Eckhart, succumbed to injuries at his home. Logsdon was found about 8:30 o'clock Thursday night on the National pike, near Kelly's pump, unconscious and bleeding. How he met his injuries are unknown, but indications were that he had been hurled to the roadway by a speeding automobile. Logsdon had left his home at 7:30 o'clock to visit some friends. He was removed to Miners' Hospital and Friday morning apparently had recovered and was removed to his home. Friday night he suffered a relapse and a physician was summoned. He never rallied and death ensued Sunday night. It is stated he apparently suffered internal injuries and a severe blow to his head. He is survived by two sons, William Logsdon, of Detroit, Mich., and Owen Logsdon, of Eckhart, and a daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Walsh. He is also survived by one brother, James Logsdon, and a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Campbell, both of Eckhart. He was well and favorably known and until ten years ago had followed the occupation of a miner. The funeral will probably take place Wednesday, with burial in Eckhart Cemetery. District highway accidents over the weekend claimed the lives of three persons, and at least a dozen other persons were injured. Dead are James E. Logsdon, 80-year-old Eckhart resident, who was killed instantly early yesterday morning when struck by a car operated by Ronald Glenn Harden, of Morgantown; Mrs. Betty Ruth (Price) Malone, 31, of near Fort Ashby, and Lloyd Earl Johnson, 7, of Morgantown. Tfc. Donald R. Wade said the Harden car struck the elderly man as he was crossing the highway at the Route 40-Frog Hollow Road intersection. Logsdon was struck by the right front fender of the vehicle and hurled against a guardrail along the highway. The body of Logsdon, a retired Baltimore and Ohio Railroad employee, is at the Hafer Funeral Home, Frostburg, where services will be conducted tomorrow at 2 p. m. by Rev. Brooks Henry, pastor of Eckhart Baptist Church. Interment will be in Eckhart Cemetery. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. His wife was the late Mrs. Sophia (Michaels) Logsdon. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Clair Catherman, with whom he resided; three sons, Olen B. Logsdon, Ridgeley; Louis Logsdon, Mt. Clemens, Mich., and Marshall Logsdon, Mt. Mrs. Josephine LaRue of Ellerslie, Md., died at the home of her son, Roy LaRue at 259 East Main St., Frostburg, Md., Friday morning, Nov. 2, 1962. She was born Nov. 6, 1886, in Ellerslie, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Snelson Burley. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence LaRue. Besides her son Roy, she had a son Jesse LaRue, who was killed in World War II. Survivors include a brother, William Burley, Hyndman, Rt. 1 and two grandchildren. She held membership in the Evangelical United Brethren Church of Ellerslie. Funeral services: Monday at 2 p.m. in the church in Ellerslie, the Rev. J. L. Tenney officiating, assisted by Rev. George Hattenfield. Interment in Cooks Mills Cemetery. He died on 8 Feb 1904 at the age of 38 in Allegany Co., Maryland. Mr. George Henry Rizer was killed at the clay mine of the Big Savage Fire Brick Company at Allegany mines yesterday. Mr. Rizer went to the mine with a man named Oliver Beal from his home in Mt. Savage, going into the mine with Beal. Mr. Beal, seeing that it was dangerous on account of some rock hanging down, told Rizer to go back a piece while he took the rock down, and thinking Rizer was from under it he proceeded to remove the rock, when Beal looked back he was horrified when he saw Rizer under the pile of rock & clay, which had killed him instantly. A jury was summoned and viewed the remains at Allegany mine. Judge John Chambers was acting coroner for the state, with the following jurymen: Messrs. Otto Hohing, Thos.Morgan, Henry Wagner, Joseph Welsh, Patrick F.Brady, Oliver Gerlach, Chas F.Johns, A.L.McKenzie, Oscar Hansell, Wm.R.Mattax, John T.Lewis, and Edward Bradly, who after viewing the remains, rendered the following verdict: that on the 8th day of Feb 1904, at Frostburg, MD, in Allegany county, the aforesaid Geo. H. Rizer came to his death from a fall of rock in the mine of the Big Savage Fire Brick Company; said George H. Rizer's death being due to his negligence and that we exonerate the said Big Savage Fire Brick Co. from any blame because of his death. The remains were brought to this place and taken to Messrs. Gehauf & Mauer's undertaking establishment on main street, where the body was prepared for burial, which will take place in Mt. Savage. Mrs. Christopher Martin - Mrs Catherine Martin, 87, of the Miller Rest Home, 150 W.Woodland Ave, died of infirmities at 3:10 p.m. Tuesday at the home. Mrs. Martin was born Oct. 20, 1867 in Maryland, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Rizer. She came to Youngstown about 40 years ago and before going to the rest home, she lived about 3 years with a daughter, Mrs. Pearl Jackson in Sand Patch, PA. She was a member of Hillman St. Christian Church. Her husband, Christopher Martin, died in 1932. Besides Mrs. Jackson, she leaves two other daughters, Mrs. Geneva Summers and Mrs. Alpha Webb, both of Youngstown; 5 sons, George of Meyersdale, PA; Howard of Belton, TX; and Roy, Charles and Louis of Youngstown; 27 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Shriver-Allison South Side Funeral Home, where friends may call tomorrow evening. December 22, 1954

Frostburg, Feb. 17 — Mrs. Anna Martens, 60, wife of Henry Martens, Youngstown, O., and the former Miss Anna Shell, a native of Mt. Savage, died suddenly yesterday from a heart attack. Fifteen years ago she moved with her family to Youngstown. She lived at National for many years. Besides her husband she leaves four grown sons and daughters, all of Youngstown. She was a sister of Mrs. Christopher Martens, Youngstown; Mrs. William Murray, Cumberland, and Mrs. George Lynch, Mt. Savage. She was a member of the Methodist Church. Mrs. Clara Matilda Murray, 68, of 210 Main Street, Ridgeley, died this morning at home after an illness of eight months. A native of Mt. Savage, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Catherine (Porter) Schell. Her husband, William H. Murray, died December 11, 1942. Mrs. Murray was a member of Ridgeley Methodist church and of the Ladies' Bible Class and the Ladies' Aid Society of the church. She was also a member of Lodge No. 141, Dames of Malta. She resided in Ridgeley for the past 35 years. Surviving are the following children: Mrs. Othalia Hendley, Cumberland; Mrs. Mary Hamilton, Mt. Savage; Mrs. Grace Colloff, Mt. Savage; William T. Murray, Short Gap, W. Va.; and Mrs. Beatrice Harvey, Cincinnati, O. Also surviving are a sister, Mrs. Katherine Martin, Youngstown, O.; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Carpenter and Mrs. Martha Loy Holler, both of Hyndman, Pa.; two sons, Harlan E. Porter, Buffalo Mills, Pa.; and Richard E. Born near Hyndman, he was a son of'the late Daniel and Sarah (Porter) Clites and was the husband of the late Anna May (Madden) Clites. Mr. Clites was a retired employe of Kelly-Springfield Tire Company and was a member of Ellerslie Evangelical United Brethren Church. Surviving are five children: George E. Brown, Hyndman; Mrs. Catherine S. Jewell, RD 1, Hyndman; Daniel C. Clites, Baltimore; Mrs. Elizabeth N. Boor, Winchester Road, Cumberland; and Mrs. Hilda E. Robertson, Erie; a brother, Roy Clites, Ellerslie; a sister, Mrs. Nina Bohn, RD 1 Hyndman; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. A native of Bedford county, where she lived her entire life, Mrs. Lowery was the daughter of the late Daniel and Sarah Porter Clites. She was a member of Cook's Mill Methodist church. Besides Mrs. Shroyer, the following children survive: Harvey G., Alvin E. and Virgil D. Lowery, all of Hyndman R D. 1, and Orville L. Lowery, of Ellerslie. Other survivors include three brothers, William H. Clites, Corriganville; Albert R. Clites, Hyndman, and Roy C. Clites, Altoona, and one sister, Mrs. Mina R. Bonn, Hyndman, R.D. 1. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon from Cook's Mill chapel, with the Rev. Owens, assisted by the Rev. W. T. Kemp, of Ellerslie, officiating. Interment was in Porter's cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Mary (Campbell) Clites; a daughter, Mrs. Alverna Stuckey, Mechanicsburg; a son Willie R. Clites, Elizabeth, N.J., two brothers, William Clites, Corriganville, and Roy Clites, Ellerslie; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The body is at the Zeigler Funeral Home. He was born September 4, 1893, at Hyndman, R.D. 1, a son of the late Daniel Clites and Sarah (Porter) Clites. He was married to Lula (Snowden) Clites who preceded him in death on October 2, 1970. Surviving are four sons, Paul M. Clites, of Duncansville; Montell Clites, of Hyndman; Roy Clites Jr., of Detroit, Michigan; and Ronald S. Clites, of Hyndman, R.D. 1; and a daughter, Mrs. Anna Jean Liebegott, of Duncansville.
