The Caleb McKenzie referenced at this location of the web site oftentimes gets confused with a Caleb McKenzie born around the same time frame, who WAS the son of Aaron McKenzie (b. abt. 1769).

The following is an email I sent to Corey Wilson in January, 2020. It sets forth the efforts of the McKenzie Group of Genealogists referenced in my book to attempt to connect Caleb McKenzie, the husband of Margaret Magers, to his parents.

Hi Corey:

Glad you found my site and reached out to me.

I wish I could be of help, but the information I can share with you is not encouraging with regard to your search for your roots.

There are two Caleb McKenzies both born around the same time who, unfortunately, have been comingled on various Internet sites. One of the Calebs was definitely the son of Aaron McKenzie (b. abt. 1769). Insofar as the other Caleb is concerned, the research group of which I am a member have attempted to connect him to his parents now for many years and have been unable to do so. If you look at the Caleb on my web site (b. abt. 1791), he is correctly connected to his father, Aaron. The other Caleb from whom I suspect you descend is the one married to Margaret Magers. He is the person we cannot connect to parents – try as we have attempted for about 20 years.

I am hoping that you will be able to make my day and be able to provide us with some personal family documents which may be able to further assist us in documenting your McKenzie family line. We always get excited when a descendant of a female McKenzie contacts us, since the females tend to get lost in the genealogy tree over time because of changing their last names. How far back do you have records cementing together the links to the various McKenzie generations?

Also, you provided me with a great list of names in your email. Have you been able to document those people from any first hand sources? I have not taken the time to closely compare the names you provided with the ones on my site. I intend to do so once I hear from you.

Again, I’m sorry I had to throw a bucket of cold water on your genealogy search. This Caleb of yours has been very elusive. A good friend of mine, Bobbie McKenzie, started chasing information on him in about 1965. As of the last time I corresponded with her about two years ago, she still had not been able to connect him with his parents. And, that chase entailed going to courthouses all over Maryland, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois in her search. So, many others have tried but have all come up empty. I am crossing my fingers right now hoping you might be the person to help us solve this conundrum and help us all with this nagging loose end.

Ignatius married Eliza Magers on 28 Apr 1831 in Knox, Ohio. Eliza (daughter of Peter IV Magers and Rachel Jackson) was born on 16 Jun 1815; died on 19 May 1853. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

Stephen Elias, was named after and baptized in Maryland by the famous Rev. Father Stephen Baden, the first native born priest ordained in the U.S. He and his wife Polly were married at St. Luke's and witnessed by their pastor, the French-born Father John Baptist Lamy. Stephen had 14 children, including one adopted child and at least two who died young. Stephen's wife was Mary Blubaugh.
Stephen and Mary "Polly" lived near Danville OH until 1862, when he led a wagon train to Allen County, IN. Mary's parents, Jacob and Honora went along. Stephen later farmed 80 acres of land near Ft. Wayne, IN.

Mary Blubaugh rode a horse, at the age of eight, in 1828 on the trip to Danville, OH when her folks moved there. She and Stephen owned an old bureau which was said to have come over on the ship that brought her family from Holland about the time of Lord Baltimore. They were said to have gone to England because of the religious persecutions in Holland and came over on a boat leaving for Maryland and the colonies. The bureau was bought from the estate by daughter Mary Catherine Blubaugh (Magers) and son-in-law and presented to the Historical Museum at Notre Dame University sometime in the 1930's. It had been used in their home in all three states (MD, OH and IN) many times as an altar for the Catholic missionaries to say mass.

Sarah was an invalid for two years before her death of "paralysis on July24, 1899.She lived in Marion Township,
Delaware County. Her funeral was at Saint Peter's, Columbus."

In 1883 Gabe and Laura took their two firstborn, Gus and the baby, Sarah, to Kansas in a wagon train. The
purpose was to link up with other McKenzie cousins already there, but not finding a good job, they returned the next year. Sarah was a frail child and rode on a pillow on the wagon bed. Gus, as a young boy, remembers the return trip with an¬ other wagon train a year later and sitting around the campfire watching the fire gleaming off the red eyes of wolves at night. Gabriel was struck by a car while crossing West Broad Street to visit his son, Alonzo. He lived several days and died June 21,1927, at Mt. Carmel Hospital. Laura died Nov. 9, 1945, in Marion, and is buried beside Gabe in Saint Joseph Cemetery, Columbus, in the Saint Joseph Section. "Gabe" and Laura are the parents of eight: Gus, Sarah Simmons, James, Thomas, Anna and Mary (twins), John and Alonza/Alonzo.

McKenzie, Thomas Richard, born Dec. 16, 1849, at McArthur, Vinton Co., on April24, 1878, married Johanna Jane Brophey, born June28, 1856, in Zanesville. She, at "age 23, lived in the James R. McKenzie household in June 1880, Wilkesville Township," according to the 1880 Census. The March 8, 1923, issue of The Circleville Union
Herald lists the obituary of Tom, stating that "In early life Tom was a farmer, but later in life became an engi¬ neer, having served in that capacity for a number of years in this city and in Pennsylvania." A grandson says Tom never lived in Pennsylvania, but his son Jerry did. Tom was a stationary engineer who fired the steam
boilers at the Strawboard Works in Circleville. He and Jane are the parents of ten: Mary Wilkens, Jerry, Hannah Frances, M. Agnes Adams, Cecilia Schneider, Thomas James, John, Julia Catherine (Sister Mary Teresina CSC) and Rose Elizabeth/infant. Tom died March 5, 1923, age 73, and Hanna, five days later on March 10, 1923. Both are buried at Saint Joseph Cemetery, Circleville.

McKenzie, Francis Dominic, born Aug. 8,1852, known as bald-headed "Uncle Nick" to his many nieces and nephews. In June1880 he lived in the McKenzie household and died March 14, 1933, as a bachelor.
Uncle Nick often came out to help his brother Gus at the Scioto Golf Course and Maggie with cooking for their large family. He would stay for some time and would go to the barn for 'spiritual' nourishment as his family knew he
loved his whiskey, Once his nieces found his hiding place and emptied his whiskey bottle. They filled it with baby mice and rain water.

Welsh, Agnes Cecilia (McKenzie), born Feb. 8, 1857, was 9 years old when she was baptized with her brother, Edward, on Feb. 12,1865, at Holy Redeemer Ch., Portsmouth, Ohio. Agnes married John Welsh at ______and were childless.

They selected Catherine Eigensee from an orphanage and raised her in their home. Kate/Catherine married Agnes' younger brother, Edward (page 40). The Welsh family lived at Galena, Ohio, and their funer¬ als were at Saint Paul Church, Westerville. Agnes died Feb. 19, 1939, and John, Sept. 4, 1937, age 83, burial at Oak Grove Cem., Delaware.

McKenzie, James Elias, born Nov. 3, 1859, single, farmer in the 1880 Census. Jim worked in a downtown Columbus hotel for many, many years and was considered a "classy man". He died Aug. 4, 1948, with burial at______Cem.

1910 Census reflects that he was living with his brother Edward Ambrose in 1910.

Ward, Margaret Rachel (McKenzie), born June 7, 1862, named after her maternal grandmother. She is not living in the McKenzie household in June 1880, so must be elsewhere. Margaret and Frank Joseph Ward were married at Saint Joseph Catholic Church, Frankfort (near Chillicothe) Ohio, by Rev. J. A. Murry on April21, 1884, and have eleven children. Frank, born Dec. 21, 1859, was the son of Patrick Ward (born 1822 in County Donegal, Ireland) and Mary Murphy (born 1828 in County Longford, Ireland). Frank died April 14, 1935, and Margaret, August23,
1946, with burial at Saint Mary Cem., Marion, Ohio. Their great grandson is Wayne Ward, 88 Summit St., Portsmouth, RI 02871. Much of the following came from the Ward Family Bible in the possession of Margaret Dune of Marion, Ohio. The Ward children are Mary Ellen (Sister Alonzo O.P.), John Redmond, James Francis, Edward Dominic, Francis Thomas, Joseph Raymond, Ivan Anthony, Agnes Cecilia Pfeiffer, Margaret S. Thomas, Loretta Gertrude and Gertrude Catherine.

Margaret married Francis Joseph Ward on 21 Apr 1884 in Saint Joseph's Catholic Church, Frankfort (near Chillicothe), Ross Co., Ohio. McKenzie, Sarah Frances, born Feb. 20,1867, was baptized on March 15, 1868.She attends school in June 1880 and later became Sister Mary Alonso, C.S.C., of the Congreg¬ ation of the Holy Cross, entering her religious community Sept. 7, 1899, becoming an official "laundress". During her short 60 years on this earth Sister M. Alonzo served the Lord in various housekeeping capacities in Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Texas, Utah and California. She died May 16, 1937, with burial at Saint Mary's Cemetery, Notre Dame, Indiana. Her niece, Sister Mary Teresina, C.S.C.,had joined this religious community in 1927. The Baptisms of Sarah, Samuel and Ignatius took place at Saint Mary's, Minerton, according to Archives, Diocese of Columbus.

McKenzie, Augustus "Gus" Stanislaus, born May 7, 1881, on Feb. 12, 1907, married Margaret Maud Wright, daughter of George Washington Wright and Eliza Ellen Dopp. Father Wm. McDermott witnessed their marriage at Holy Family Rectory, Columbus. After Josephine's death Maggie took instructions and became Catholic. Maggie was born Apr. 20, 1887, at Ripley, W. Virginia. She was an 17 year old graduate of Clinton Township High School. Since she passed the standard "Boxwell Test" Maggie had plans to become a teacher. When she was offered a teaching position many, many miles away by horse and buggy, she turned it down, not wanting to lose her future husband. The newlyweds were ambitious people and lived early in Franklin County, and in Worthington, where Laura and Anna were born. They raised their nine children on Rt. 310 after moving in 1926 from 3 acres on Tremont
Road, just noth of Lane Avenue. Previously Gus worked for Sciote Country Club and took care of the golf course. In the winter he sprinkled the tennis courts to make ice rinks from 1918-20. He cut the golf course with a triplex pulled with his team of horses. Gus was a contractor - digging cellars and grading cellars in the Upper Arlington area. This was prior to 1926 when he also used slip scrapers for housing developments. He hired a number of men and teams of horses. Apparently successful, Gus developed ulcers, so decided to buy a 100 acre farm just south of Johnstown
on State Route 310 in Licking County. The family hosted both McKenzie and Wright family reunions for many years.

Maggie and Gus raised their family of ten children on their homestead: Josephine, Laura, Anna Reich, Ida
Crow, George, Margaret, Grace Bowman, Winifred, Hugh and Thomas. Only Tom was born there. Being very education minded, the six youngest daughters all graduated from Alexandria High School. Maggie taught Gus the remainder of his deprived education. She taught her children many songs and school cheers that she composed herself. Gus died Nov. 2, 1966, and Maggie, March20, 1977, with burial at St. Joseph Cem., beside Josephine.

Augustus married Margaret Maud Wright on 12 Feb 1907. Margaret (daughter of George Washington Wright and Eliza Ellen Dopp) was born on 20 Apr 1887 in Ripley, Jackson County, West Virginia; died on 20 Mar 1977 in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

where Sarah attended school. John Patrick Simmons, born Aug. 1, 1874, son of Andrew and Harriet Simmons.
Andrew was born in Ireland. Sarah and John lived in Vinton, then at Worthington, Ohio, where John worked at Jeffrey Manufacturing. The Simmons family moved to Marion in 1922, when John took sick and died July, 1923, of cancer.
Fifteen children are born: John, William, Laura Dunn, Edward, James, Francis, Lawrence, Catherine Ison, Mary Quick, Charles, Clarence, Bernard, and Thomas (the only child born in Marion, whose dad died when he was 9 mo.) Sarah died 1968, and is buried beside John in St. Mary Cem., Marion. (The write-up of Sarah's daugh¬
ter, Eleanor, follows that of Thomas Simmons.)

McKenzie, Alonza/Alonzo Henry, born Oct. 3, 1900, in Vinton County. As a child he came to a farm on Route 315 north of Worthington at Mount Air. This farm was on both sides of the road just south of Delaware Co. Known as Mac, Alonzo worked all the farm chores. He was gifted in working with horses, which he did in road building. He used his team and wagon to haul luggage for the Columbus Transfer Company, especially from the railroad depot to local hotels, etc. Like his Uncle James, Mac also operated a Columbus streetcar. On a snowy Dec. 26, 1918, Mac arrived at Immaculate Conception Church, Columbus, in horse and buggy to wed Catherine Terwillinger, born Sept. 23, 1898. The family lived in Columbus, then moved out into the country near Pleasantville in Fairfield County. Here Mac worked on local farms, then returned to Columbus, where he was employed at the OSU farms for twenty years. In1970 Mac retired and died Dec. 3, 1976.His funeral was at Our Lady of Victory Church and the celebrant was Rev. Homer D. Blubaugh. Catherine died July 4, 1984, with burial beside Mac at Union Cemetery, Columbus.

The McKenzie children are Ruth Ford, Anna Wahlenmairer, William, Joseph Edward, Joseph Alonzo, Paul and Catherine Cherry.

Alonzo married Catherine Terwillinger on 26 Dec 1918 in Immaculate Conception Church, Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio. Catherine was born on 23 Sep 1898; died on 4 Jul 1984. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Wilkens, Mary Ann(McKenzie), born Aug. 18, 1880, in a log cabin in Jackson Township, on May 14, 1906, married Johann Bernhard Wilkens Sr. at St. Joseph Ch., Circleville, Ohio. He was a widower, whose wife and firstborn child both died in childbirth. Johann was born Nov. 11, 1865, in Altenmarhorst, Province Hanover, Germany.
The Wilkens family lived in Youngstown, Ohio. Their six children are Bernard Sr., John, Thomas, Cecilia Jackamo, Jane Young and Joseph. Johann died March 7, 1938, and Mary, Nov. 26, 1957, with burial at Calvary Cem., Youngstown.

Mary married Johann Bernard Wilkens on 14 May 1906 in St. Joseph's Church Circleville, Pickaway County, Ohio. Johann was born on 11 Nov 1865 in Altenmarhorst, Province Hanover, Germany; died on 7 Mar 1938. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

McKenzie, P. (Pius) Jeremiah Samuel, born Oct. 21, 1881, at Stumpy Lane in the Circleville area. Jerry started the twelveth grade, worked for the Strawboard Works, then moved to Monessen, Pa., where he worked first for Page Steel and Wire, later with Pittsburgh Steel Co. Jerry married Elizabeth Betts, born Dec. 18, 1887, in Gallatin, Pa. He met Elizabeth at a shoe store, where she was a clerk. Before their marriage on April 17, 1907, in St. Leonard Ch., Monessen, Jerry and Elizabeth both gave much of their wages to their parents for family support, which was the custom then. The four McKenzie children are Estelle Swade, James, John and Henry. Jerry died March5, 1969, at Greensburg, Pa., and Elizabeth, Mar. 2, 1960, with burial at St. Mary Cem., Monongahela, Pa.

Jeremiah married Elizabeth Betts on 17 Apr 1907 in St. Leonard Church, Monessen, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. Elizabeth was born on 18 Dec 1887 in Gallatin, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania; died on 2 Mar 1960 in North Charleroi, Washington County, Pennsylvania. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

McKenzie, Hannah Frances, born July 20, 1883, received her college education at Ohio University, Athens, Ohio.
The following tribute to Hannah is taken from the December, 1966, issue of the "Home Review", which states that "Miss McKenzie began teaching at the (Ohio Soldiers and Sailors Orphans) Home(in Xenia) in 1925 and continued teaching elementary and junior high grades until she retired June 30, 1953, (almost at age 70). She resided in Columbus until she died July 1, 1966." This home is now called the Ohio Veterans Childrens' Home/OVCH.

McKenzie, John Ignatius, Sr., born July22, 1892, served as PFC in 305th Brig. Tank Corp. in WW I. He arried Louise Agnes Brembeck, born June 1, 1889, daughter of John Brembeck and Mary Bader. John and Louise were
married at the old Saint Peter Church, Columbus, Ohio, on Oct. 29, 1919. The family first lived at Circleville, and later moved to Lancaster, Ohio, where he was a salesman for Kroger. Then John became manager of the Kroger Store on Columbus Street. Their six children are John, Jeanne, Robert, Herbert, John Jr. and Louise Gladfelter. John was a tall large man and Louise an elegant lady. John Sr. died May 10, 1968, and Louise, April 6, 1971, age 81, with burial at Saint Mary Cemetery, Lancaster.

(McKenzie, Julia Catherine), Sister Mary Teresina CSC, born March 3, 1897, a 1915 graduate of Circleville High
School and received her nurse's training at Mt. Carmel Hospital, Columbus, in 1924. Her family knew her as
Katherine McKenzie and is remembered for her remarkable singing voice at Saint Joseph Church, Circleville. Her aunt, Sister Mary Alonzo CSC, was a member of the religious who operated this hospital, so Julia joins the order as a nurse during the years, 1924-27, she worked at Mt. Carmel Hospital. Sister Mary Teresina was to serve in many assignments in Indiana and Illinois for the rest of her 76 years, being retired only the last year of her life. Her community Obituary states that "Sister Mary Tere¬ sina, CSC, entered the Congregation of the Sisters of
the Holy Cross on Sept. 24, 1927, coming from Columbus, Ohio. Sister received the Habit on Aug. 15, 1928, and
was professed on Aug. 15, 1930, and died at Saint Mary's Convent, Notre Dame, Indiana, March 28, 1973, fortified
by the Sacraments. Interment at Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, Indiana."

Ward, Mary Ellen, "Sister Mary Alonzo 0. P.", born Feb. 26, 1885, entered the Dominican Religious order in 1912, received the habit in 1913 and pronounced her vows on July 10, 1914, according to Dominican Archival files. Sister Alonzo served at Saint Peter, Holy Name and Saint Anthony Schools, Steubenville; Saint Francis de
Sales and Blessed Sacrament, Newark; Saint Mary, Lancas¬ ter; Saint Thomas, Columbus; Saint Claire, Grosse
Points, Mich., and Saint William, Saint Thomas, Saint Brendan and Saint Lawrence in the Pittsburgh Diocese. From 1943-44 Sister Alonzo served as an instructor at Glendale, Ohio, for the Home Missioners. Her "two years there were unique. She was assigned as Superior of a group of our Springs Sisters to assist some young women with the task of founding a fledging community of Sisters designed to assist the poor in the area. By her loving care and direction, Sister Alonzo was held in admiration and gratitude by these young women." Sister also served as infirmarian at Saint Mary of the Springs, and as seamstress at the Dominican House of Studies in Chicago. Since 1958 she had been confined to the comunnity infirmary at Saint Mary of the Springs. On Feb. 1, 1963, Sister Alonzo was called to the Lord.
Her Solemn Requiem Masss was offered Feb. 4, 1963, at Saint Mary of the Springs Convent Chapel, with burial in
the Community Cemetery.

Pfeiffer, Agnes Cecilia (Ward), born Sept.19, 1899, became an artist working in oils and painting clay dishes and vases, trimming them in gold leaf trim. Many of these pieces were done for family members and survive in excellent condition at Margaret's home. Agnes married Francis N. Pfeiffer, born ------------1891, on April18,1918, at Saint Joseph Church, LaRue, Ohio. Frank was the son of Michael and Anne Pfeiffer, Marion. Two children are born of this marriage, Maxine and Margaret Ellen. Agnes and Francis later divorce. She and her young girls then lived in the Ward family home. Agnes and her father, Frank Ward, operated a general store and gas station in Marion next to their home. The Wards at one time owned 500 acres of land near the Killdeer Wilderness Preserve north of Marion. Frank died Dec.22, 1973 and Agnes, Aug.23, 1988, with burial at Saint Mary Cemetery, Marion.
